The elevator shuddered to a stop, and the doors opened to reveal an underwater world straight out of a storybook. Blue light filtered through the water, casting shimmering patterns on the coral-studded floor. Schools of brightly colored fish swam past, and in the distance, a towering castle made of seashells glimmered like a pearl.
Greg took a hesitant step out of the elevator. "How are we breathing underwater?"
Mallory yawned. "The elevator probably did something. Magic, science, whatever. Let's just roll with it."
Alex squinted at the surroundings. "This place looks peaceful, which probably means trouble is coming."
As if on cue, a pair of mermaids with flowing hair and jewel-encrusted tails appeared, holding tridents and looking none too pleased.
"Who dares trespass in the realm of Queen Aquadonna?" one of them demanded, pointing her trident at Mallory.
Mallory raised a hand lazily. "Relax, fish lady. We're just passing through."
---
Before the mermaids could respond, a swirling current enveloped the group and whisked them away to the castle. They were deposited unceremoniously in a grand hall where a regal mermaid sat on a throne made of shimmering pearls. Her crown sparkled with seaweed and gemstones, and her expression was one of mild irritation.
"So," Queen Aquadonna began, her voice carrying a melodic yet stern tone. "You're the surface dwellers causing a ruckus in my kingdom?"
"Ruckus?" Greg spluttered. "We literally just got here!"
Aquadonna ignored him, her gaze settling on Mallory. "And you… You look like trouble."
Mallory shrugged. "I get that a lot."
The queen frowned. "I should have you all imprisoned for trespassing. But…" She trailed off, her eyes narrowing. "There may be a use for you."
Mallory groaned. "Why does everyone want me to do stuff? Can't I just nap?"
---
It turned out that Queen Aquadonna's kingdom was under threat from a giant sea slug named Glorp, who had been eating all the coral and polluting the waters with his slime.
"Defeat Glorp, and I'll let you go free," the queen declared.
Greg immediately puffed out his chest. "We'll take care of it! Right, Mallory?"
Mallory stared at him, deadpan. "Did you hit your head on the way here? There's no way I'm fighting a sea slug."
"But we have to!" Greg insisted. "It's the only way out of here!"
Mallory smirked. "Or we just hang out in the castle, enjoy the seafood buffet, and wait for someone else to handle it."
---
Despite Mallory's protests, the group was escorted to the edge of a coral reef where Glorp was reportedly wreaking havoc. The sea slug was massive, with a slimy, iridescent body that left a trail of sticky goo wherever it moved.
Greg unsheathed his sword, ready to charge. Alex notched an arrow into his bow.
Mallory, however, remained planted on a nearby rock. "You guys have fun. I'm rooting for you."
Greg shot her a frustrated look. "Mallory, come on! This thing is destroying the ecosystem!"
Mallory sighed and stood up, twirling her Staff of Lazula. "Fine. Let's get this over with."
She pointed her staff at Glorp, muttering, "Nap time."
A wave of blue energy shot out, enveloping the slug. Glorp froze mid-slime, then slowly tipped over and began snoring loudly.
Alex blinked. "Did you just… put it to sleep?"
Mallory smirked. "Problem solved. Can we leave now?"
---
When they returned to the castle, Queen Aquadonna was incredulous.
"You… subdued Glorp?" she asked, her tone a mix of disbelief and admiration.
Mallory flopped onto a chaise lounge made of seashells. "Yup. Took, like, two seconds."
The queen eyed her suspiciously. "How?"
"Let's just say I have a way with making things… relaxed," Mallory replied, smirking.
The queen clapped her hands, and the entire hall erupted in cheers. "You've saved my kingdom! In gratitude, I shall grant you a boon."
Mallory perked up slightly. "Does this boon involve snacks?"
---
A grand banquet was held in their honor, complete with platters of seafood delicacies, glowing kelp salads, and drinks served in shimmering conch shells.
Greg was in heaven, piling his plate high. Alex sampled cautiously, while Mallory focused entirely on a bowl of seaweed chips.
"This is the life," Mallory said, leaning back and popping another chip into her mouth.
Queen Aquadonna approached, holding a small, glowing pearl. "This is the Pearl of Tides. It's a powerful artifact that can summon water anywhere, even on land. I entrust it to you as a token of my gratitude."
Mallory accepted the pearl without much fanfare. "Cool. Can it fill a bathtub for me? That's about all I'd use it for."
The queen's eye twitched. "It can… do much more than that."
---
As they made their way back to the elevator, the mermaids and sea creatures lined up to wave them off.
"You will always be welcome here, Lady Mallory," the queen called out.
"Thanks, your majesty," Mallory replied. "Next time, maybe send someone else to handle your slug problem."
The elevator doors closed, and the group found themselves ascending once again.
Greg leaned against the wall, shaking his head. "How do you always manage to get out of these situations with zero effort?"
Mallory grinned. "It's a gift."
Alex chuckled. "Let's hope the next dimension isn't too chaotic."
The display changed to: Next Stop: Sky Island Adventure.
Greg groaned. "Why do I feel like we're about to deal with something even weirder?"
Mallory stretched out on the couch. "Wake me when we get there."
