I woke with a gasp, my chest heaving as if I had been holding my breath for too long.
The dim light of my room was a stark contrast to the silvery glow of the dream realm I had just left. My heart pounded against my ribs, the sound filling the silence as I stared up at the dark ceiling. The old woman's words echoed in my mind, chilling and cryptic.

I rolled onto my side, my breathing still uneven, and glanced at Manila. She was curled up on the bed beside me, her soft breaths steady and peaceful. Her silver hair shimmered faintly in the moonlight filtering through the curtains.
I envied her calm state. I wished i could be as unbothered as she was.
The memory of the old woman's glowing eyes made my skin prickle, and I wrapped my arms around myself, trying to chase away the lingering fear. Who was she? What did she mean by ember of life?
