"Why do you walk by the shore" asked Windor after a few days.
Shade looks at him and answered "If you don't like it you can leave whenever you want".
The sun was setting and Windor was on night watch. He had taken night watch every other day. The first day Shade was on watch there was nothing that happened but when Windor woke up and realized she could have run away or even killed him. He was both relieved but also upset with himself. Relieved because he knew he could trust her, and was angry because he had let something as important as his life slide in and out of his mind. Shade had noticed this a few days later and realized that she could trust him too.
Six days later Shade woke up in the morning as usual except this time she woke up to three dead goblins about 15 feet from where she was sleeping that night. Windor was sitting down leaning against a tree staring into the sea in thought. She instantly woke up all the way when she realized the goblins had tried to kill her and Windor while she was sleeping.
"what happened last night" Shade asked him.
"we were attacked by four goblins" He responded.
"and I didn't wake up at all" she said feeling a little better sense she didn't even wake up to three dying goblins but also disturbed because if she was sleeping and there was nobody here to help her she would have been dead.
Confused, she asked the question that had been on her mind since Windor said four goblins "what happened to the fourth one".
Windor looked at her and said "guess".
"okay" she said, and guessed "you killed it further away"?
Windor coughed on his laugh while saying "no, it ran away. We need to keep moving or you'll be attacked tomorrow night".
after a few minutes of taking a short break they both stood up and kept on their journey following the shore now going west toward the Plains of Kri.
When the sun was setting They found a nice spot to set up camp with a small boulder and two trees one of which Windor slept next to. Tonight it was Shade's turn for night watch so she sat down on the boulder and was especially perceptive tonight because of Windor's warning the day before.
At night when Shade was awake she was unpleasantly surprised to see a dark figure about 60 feet away.
Although Shade could only see its silhouette she recognized it as another goblin, one of if not the weakest monster in the world of Krynn.
The goblin spotted them a few minutes ago and had just started to quietly move towards who was in its mind the weakling of the two. Since the strong looking one was sleeping it thought it had nothing to worry about.
Goblins had never been the brightest creatures in nearly any way. They blinded by bright light so they hated the sun, their skin was dark with a green tint and they weren't too smart either. The only bright things they liked where coins like copper, silver, gold, and platinum.
When Shade saw the little goblin walking towards them she taught about how to even use a sword without getting hit. She was looking at the goblin and it definitely had a sword although it was pretty short to her but average for a goblin. Finally she decided to fight it on her own because the best way to learn is always the real thing.
Shade got up from the boulder she was sitting on and moved forward a few steps to avoid waking up Windor during combat.
The goblin was in chain-male armor and used a short sword but no shield. It was running at her quietly now to make sure Windor doesn't wake up. At least it was as quiet as a goblin could be while running and wearing chain-male. All things considered it still wasn't very quiet. Windor, who was only ten feet away from Shade, even groaned in his sleep because of the noise. Shade was a little excited to see what battle felt like, she would be disappointed.
When the two clashed, if I can even call it a clash. It was more like the goblin ran at Shade with its sword out, all quiet and looking like an idiot while she stood there like a deer in headlights trying to figure out how to block as if blocking even metered because the goblin missed entirely and got its sword stuck in the ground. Instead of pulling its sword out of the ground, it decided to take out its dagger and jump on Shade. Shade was knocked down onto her back and dropped her sword. As she fell she looked over at Windor who still appeared to be sleeping. Shade then looked up at the goblin that was now raising its dagger in preparation to kill her. As the dagger was coming down to her throat just next to the necklace her grandfather gave to her about 20 days ago she grabbed its arm with both of her hands to hold it back as long as she could. The goblin tried to use its other hand to get through her defense.
Just a few seconds before her arms were about to give out she saw a dim light radiating from a few feet away from her.
"am I actually going to die now" Shade thought, not realizing what the light was coming from.
"I have to leave my home and come to Southern Ergoth because it's too dangerous just to die here" she thought again.
The light got closer. Shade used the energy she had left in her arms to push the dagger out of the way but it still hit the side of her neck.
As the goblin pulled on the dagger to try again, it looked towards where the light was coming from. A bright red blade was thrust through its heart from the back and when the creature died, Shade passed out.
