Chapter 4 - Psionics in a cave

Shade looked at Windor as he asked her what happened since he had actually never felt what that was like. She told him what happened as well as she could explain it, which wasn't too well, he did have a small idea already so he understood it a little.

"what spell was that" Shade asked.

"it wasn't a spell," Windor answered.

"what was it" she asked again.

"psionics," he said "its technically not magic. What I'm doing is i'm altering things around me with my mind. What you felt is called a psionic blast".

"so what will I be able to do" Shade asks, intrigued.

He looks at her like she asked him to kill a dragon with his bare hands "I don't know that," he said as if it was obvious. "all I can do is teach you what I can do and hope you can do it too".

After a few weeks Shade had learned everything Windor had to teach her about psionics. Instead of writing everything that happened for her to learn it, I'll just list what she learned and what it does from weakest to strongest.

Body equilibrium: lets the user change the mass of themselves and everything they're wearing with few exceptions.

Clairvoyance: lets the user see a location of their choice with few exceptions.

Precognition: lets the user predict the near future, chance of success may change based on knowledge and difficulty of the prediction.

Cell adjustment: Windor didn't remember what this one was called but this sounded similar to this. Cell adjustment lets the user heal any living thing they can contact physically.

Domination: gives the user complete control over the mind of one other creature with varying exceptions.

Psionic blast: lets the user attack the minds of a number of living things in a cone In front of the user, effects can be anywhere from doing nothing, to killing the creatures attacked. Has very few circumstantial exceptions.

Over the time they trained in this subject Windor became mentally exhausted many times every day. However, Shade had never had any kind of exhaustion from using psionics but she did have trouble controlling them. Most of the time whenever she wanted something to happen it would just happen as if she was being controlled by something else, sometimes if she was unable to think, her psionics would fight on their own without having to be controlled like it always is.

"so" Windor started "do you want to figure out where those goblins came from," he continued "so you can practice your new skills in actual combat".

Shade wondered why Windor thought that she wanted to use this in combat, she actually didn't want to use it at all. Although, now that she was thinking about it he did say she would be hated for this ability. So why not be hated and use the power instead of being hated and not use it.

"sure, why not" she agreed after a little contemplation.

After a few days of searching they finally traced the goblins hideout to a small cave in a cliff face. As they searched they made sure to pay attention to which way they where going in relation with the sea to the south. They hadn't gotten too much closer to the Plains of Kri so they didn't mind going a few miles off track.

The cave appeared to be natural with only a five foot tall and ten foot wide opening to get inside. They were sure the goblins came from here, Shade could tell that there where definitely goblins by how it smells.

"This time let's see how well you do, I'll teach you later" Windor tried to explain. He didn't do a good job though because Shade hadn't the slightest idea what he was talking about, she could think of hundreds of different things he could have meant by that.

She didn't respond and when he realized that she didn't plan to, they quietly went into the cave after Windor took out his sword so he could see from it's glow.

The walls of the cave are what you would expect from a natural cave, jagged. Although the entrance was only five feet tall and ten feet wide, when they went in it was a much larger cave, the back wall almost 60 feet back and 20 feet tall with many small tunnels in all directions. As they go further, the walls got smoother and smoother. Most of the time they didn't know it was 20 feet tall because of all the stalactites on the roof of the cave.

Only Shade could see these details because she was an elf walking just outside Windor's sword's glow for the purpose of using her night vision. Windor on the other hand, was human so he had to rely on light to see anything in the cave and his sword's glow only goes about 10 feet. He did have some trouble with Shades location since she was outside of the small area in which he could see, He had to listen to know where she was.

Shade lead Windor to the right side of the cave so he would know where he was compared to the walls instead of him only seeing the floor like he was before. She thought it would be a good idea to stay against the right wall so if they get lost they can find their way back.

"hey," Shade whispers "how about we stay on the right wall so if we get lost we know how to get back".

Windor not being able to see her, tries to look in her general direction, nods and mouths "I always do that, your the leader this time". After reading his lips, Shade realizes what he means when he says she will do something this time even when she hasn't done it before.

He usually does these things on his own so he's saying instead of him doing it like he usually does, she can do it instead and he'll see how well she does.

After only a few seconds of sneaking along the right wall Shade spots a tunnel branching off to the side, since it's on the right and that's the wall they're following, she decides to go to it.

When she looks around the corner she is started by a goblin standing a few feet away down the tunnel looking directly at her, unlike her, it wasn't scared because it had seen them coming because of Windor's sword.

Shade unconsciously used Domination. Immediately after, she had the goblin under her control.

Shade had the goblin walk outside of the tunnel she had found it in and into the glow from Windor's glowing sword showing it to Windor without even moving or saying anything after she turned around because she was still in shock.

Windor looked at Shade and took two fingers from his left hand because he was carrying his sword in his right, and dragged them across the front of his throat telling her to kill it.

The goblin who had seen the whole thing, started sweating as it slowly reached down and grabbed its own dagger. Shade could see on its face it was terrified and so was she as it moved it's dagger up to its own throat and slit it.

Shade was terrified at her power, she didn't want this kind of strength, being able to force a creature to commit suicide against it's will was not what she asked for.

Shade walked past Windor as calmly as she could force herself to in the moment and left the cave. Windor, understanding how she had felt, followed after he hid the goblin's body behind stalagmites.
