Chapter 1 - Inside the Cluster

Noisy children sitting on chairs surrounding circular tables could be seen and heard, all around the packed classroom. Approximately 20 students were currently in the class. The delicious scent of fruits such as apples and mangoes blew across the classroom. While some were eating fruits and talking, others were running in and out of the class. Various weapons could be seen on some of the students, such as a sword strapped on their thigh, or a bow across their back.

At the right side of the class - near the entrance of the room, a table occupied two males and a female, all seemingly teenagers.

On the table was a long bow with spikes decorated on each side of it. The middle of the bow was smaller in width compared to the edges of the bow. The middle was also curved in the opposite direction from the curvature of the rest of the bow. The middle was green in colour, while both ends of the bow were yellow. A zip-closed, cotton brown bag was also on the table, to the right of the bow.

A black short-haired, dark skinned male was at the table. He was wearing long, brown, slim-fitted jeans with high brown shoes. His muscular build could be seen ripping through the sleeveless brown vest sleeping across his chest. His face was in the direction of the other male at the table. That male was a dark-browned low-haired, caucasian male. His ectomorph body was easily visible due to the lack of clothing above his waist. He was in a black shorts, and a black sandals. His head was lowered and his eyes stared directly at the other male with a small grin on his face.

The caucasian male then said, "Remember how strong Contessa was…" both of his eyebrows raised as he took a quick pause. "..Many people would wish to become as strong and courageous as her. Hey, Caroline wouldn't you agree?"

Both guys then looked at the caucasian female sitting beside them.

Her hands were resting on the table within a blue, elbow-long gloves, decorated in green stripes. Her long black hair was dancing to the breeze across the back of the chair. Her back was leaning diagonally against the chair with her knees very close to the table. Her eyes were in an upward trajectory to the two males whose eyes were fixed on her. She lowered her eyes, then created a dimple on her left cheek. She sighed.

"Weren't we talking about the girl Jacquade had a crush on?" Caroline said.

Followed by an upward roll of her eyes. She then moved her head to the direction of the door.

The caucasian male, Zack replied with a sly grin on his face while looking at her "Really? We can't talk about the same things everyday… Besides, not everyday we are gonna have the whole time for ourselves, seeing that almost all teachers are gone now."

With raised eyebrows, and a brightened face, Jacquade raised his right index finger and said "Many of the sixteen year olds are also…"

"Yes we know." interrupted Zack.

While Caroline sighed, she lowered her head. "Whatever, I don't need to hear about how awesome Contessa is."

She patted the table with synchronised arms, the chair creaked as she raised to her feet in a slight quick manner. "I'm going to take a walk. I feel bored and I want to find something to cheer me up. I'll return when I see something interesting."

Jacquade looked up at her while using his hands to push the table, in an effort to get his body upwards from the chair. "I'm coming." He said as he raised his eyebrows with a straight face.

Her lips clasped and her eyebrows lowered. Nodding her head left to right, she answered "Naa. It's fine."

Zack, still looking at her while sitting, chuckled. He then stated "Let her go, I know what she's up to, and it's not like she can go too long without us anyways."

Nodding her head horizontally while changing her attention changed to Zack. She raised her left index finger upwards and smirked. "One day, Zack."

Caroline took up her bag of arrows as she placed the bag diagonally across her back. She then took up the bow and attached it to the bag. A slight grin came across her face while she stared at Zack, prior to leaving. A body scent of roses blew behind her slim body. She walked away in her above-knee height shoes, of the same colour and design as her gloves. The lower part of her blue halter dress danced slightly backwards to the wind. The pitch of voices inside the classroom slowly lowered, as her feet passed through the door frame.

Leaving the classroom, she was now on the corridor which attached all 5 different rooms to the same building. She continued walking forward until she was on a medium large area of grassland. The heat could be felt outside due to the scorching sun overhead. The clattering of swords was loud throughout the environment, and shoutings of many people too. The wind blew across Caroline's face as her long black hair danced behind her. She continued walking towards the cluster of trees that could be seen directly ahead. Students could be seen in all directions fighting with swords, running and laughing.

After many seconds of walking, her feet halted. To the furthest right of where Caroline was standing, a male was laying down on his back with an open book covering his face. Her eyes closed as her lips widened. She inhaled, held it for a few seconds, exhaled and opened her eyes.

Upon approaching the many trees that she saw a moment ago, she could hear "Caroline!" being shouted loudly from the direction behind her. Brightened eyes, she turned around curiously. Her eyes met four with an asian male. Sweat ran down his face as he was exhaling loudly. The right side of his body was leaning against a sword pointed downwards that he held in his right hand.

The boy said with a broad smile across his face, "Now that's a rare sight." Simultaneously he raised both eyebrows. "What, you came to challenge me?"

She slanted her head to the right as she replied with a bright smile and lowered eyebrows ``No… I'm sure you saw me walk past you." She then looked to her left and she saw two males whose swords were clashing. She then looked at the boy and raised her left eyebrows, with a smile on her face, "this is how you use your free time?"

"It is better than what you are doing. It seems like you are trying to find your inner self or something." He replied.

"No… I just got a slight motivation to increase my fighting skills."

"Then…" He said as he raised his left hand towards showing the dorsal side to Caroline. "Isn't this the golden opportunity to do that?"

Caroline chuckled. "You know what I mean."

"But I never understand, why don't you like fighting but want to…."

"Stop!" She pointed her right index finger upwards, with both her eyes wide open.

The boy lowered his head along with his eyebrows, while keeping his mouth slightly open. "...Did I.."

"No…. Don't you hear that?" Caroline looked up at the male.

"... I don't."

"Wait!" She proclaimed as she calmly turned her head in the opposite direction. Her finger slowly went down. Her shoulder, followed by her body turned to the same direction as her face. The sound of the clashing of the swords beside her got lower as she stared.

"Hey!" She shouted in the direction of the males who were in a sword battle. The clashing halted as both males gazed at her. "Sorry, I'm trying to hear something."

A puzzled look came across all the males' faces, as they gazed at Caroline's direction. The wind gained weight as it became colder. A decayed scent danced on the wind as it went in the children's direction. Caroline covered her nose with her right palm, the asian kid's head swiftly went down and towards the right in response to the smell.

Three males were standing behind Caroline - an asian male, and two other persons. Both males were standing behind the asian kid. While staring in the direction of the trees, the shorter of the two raised his eyebrows at a higher than normal height. He opened his mouth slightly, and with a puzzled look on his face, he asked "...what.. is.. going on?"

Caroline raised her right index finger slowly while pointing it vertically. The sound of the breeze increased in volume. Leaves fell from the trees, as the humming of the leaves on the trees could also be heard. All stood while patiently staring at the trees and seemingly listening. The only sounds that could be heard were the leaves, and children further behind them.

Splash!

Caroline eyebrows rose and lowered swiftly.

The asian kid rolled his eyes to the left then shifted his head in the direction of the sky. He said "hey…"

Crunch!

Caroline's head swiftly turned towards him, with a sharp look in her eyes. "Something's there!"

A sardonic smile went across the asian kid's face which was now fixated towards the ground. He shook his head. His head then raised as he looked at Caroline with a straight face. He walked ahead briskly and towards the trees. As he walked past Caroline, towards her left, she held out her left hands on his arms.

"Wait! I'm coming" Caroline said.

Both walked towards the trees as the other two males looked at them. Caroline was briskly walking behind him, while also jogging at moments. The two males behind them were still at a pause. Confusion came upon their faces before both decided to slowly follow them.

The crunching sound continued, but this time it was at the feet of Caroline as she stepped on dry tree branches. They were both inside the cluster of trees. Caroline's vision of where to step was not very clear, hence she followed where her friend went. Branch by branch they walked towards the unfamiliar scent. They walked and walked until her journey stopped as she collided on her friend's back.

"Oh no!" He said sharply with opened-eyes and raised eyebrows. A look of a ghost came upon his face.
