Chereads / Beastsworn: The Awakening Pact / Chapter 19 - XIX. The Storm Breaks

Chapter 19 - XIX. The Storm Breaks

The tension in the Skyhold was palpable. The Windcloaks moved with purpose, reinforcing defenses and preparing for the inevitable battle. The faint hum of energy filled the air as tamers and their aerial beasts worked together, setting traps and preparing to face the Venators' assault.

Kael stood at the edge of the main platform, watching as the phoenix flew in lazy circles above the spire. He reached out through their bond, feeling its unease mirrored in his own heart.

"You can sense it, too, can't you?" he murmured.

The phoenix chirped softly in response, its flames burning brighter for a moment before dimming again. It was a silent acknowledgment of the storm brewing on the horizon—both the physical one gathering in the dark clouds above and the metaphorical storm of the Venators' approach.

A Warning from the Wind

Eryndra approached Kael, her feathered cloak billowing in the wind. "The storm is coming sooner than I anticipated," she said, her voice steady despite the concern etched on her face.

Kael turned to her, the weight of her words sinking in. "How do you know?"

She gestured to the griffin perched on a nearby ledge, its feathers rippling with static energy. "The beasts feel it. The air is charged, and the winds carry whispers of danger. Ryn's forces will be here by nightfall."

Kael clenched his fists, the phoenix swooping down to perch beside him. "I won't let them take this place. I won't let them hurt anyone else."

Eryndra placed a hand on his shoulder, her grip firm. "We will fight, Kael, but you must remember your bond. The phoenix is not just your weapon—it is your partner. Together, you must stand as one, or both of you will fall."

The First Strike

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the first signs of the Venators' approach became clear. Shadows moved in the distance, cloaked figures emerging from the treeline far below the Skyhold. Their beasts, dark and twisted, prowled beside them—fanged wyverns, skeletal ravens, and other monstrosities that seemed born of nightmares.

Thane stood beside Kael, his blade gleaming in the dim light. Shadowfang growled low, its fur bristling as it caught the scent of the enemy.

"They're using the storm to their advantage," Thane said, his voice grim. "The winds will make it harder for our fliers to maneuver."

Eryndra joined them, her griffin letting out a piercing cry. "We've trained for this. The Skyhold has withstood worse. But we must act swiftly. Kael, your bond with the phoenix may tip the scales. Its fire can cut through their shadows."

Kael nodded, swallowing the lump in his throat. "I'll do whatever it takes."

Battle in the Sky

The Venators struck like a thunderclap, their dark beasts soaring through the stormy skies. The Windcloaks took to the air to meet them, griffins and wyverns clashing in a chaotic dance of wings and claws. Lightning streaked across the sky, illuminating the battle in brief, jagged flashes.

Kael mounted the phoenix, his heart racing as they launched into the fray. The air was thick with the sounds of battle—roars, cries, and the clash of steel against talons. He felt the phoenix's strength surge through him, their bond growing sharper with every moment.

"Focus on the shadowbeasts!" Thane shouted from below, his voice barely audible over the storm. "They're the backbone of the Venators' attack!"

Kael urged the phoenix higher, scanning the battlefield. He spotted a cluster of shadowbeasts circling a group of Windcloak fliers. The beasts' forms seemed to shift and ripple, their bodies wreathed in dark energy.

"Let's go!" Kael shouted, and the phoenix responded with a burst of speed. Flames erupted from its wings as it dove toward the shadowbeasts, scattering them with a fiery blast. One of the creatures turned on them, its gaping maw snapping at Kael's leg.

Kael reacted instinctively, drawing on the phoenix's power. A stream of golden fire erupted from his palm, striking the shadowbeast and sending it plummeting to the ground. The phoenix screeched triumphantly, banking sharply to avoid another attack.

The Duel

Amid the chaos, Kael spotted a figure standing on a rocky outcropping near the base of the Skyhold. The storm seemed to part around him, as if even nature dared not touch him. Captain Ryn.

Kael's blood ran cold as he felt Ryn's presence through the bond. The dark energy emanating from him was suffocating, pulling at Kael's resolve. The phoenix shrieked in defiance, its flames flaring as it sensed the threat.

Ryn raised his hand, and a shadowy wyvern descended to carry him into the sky. His mask glinted in the stormlight, the snarling wolf design making him look more beast than man. "Kael," he called, his voice carrying unnaturally through the storm. "Come face me, if you dare."

Kael's grip tightened on the phoenix's reins. "We're not running anymore," he muttered. The phoenix responded with a burst of speed, propelling them toward Ryn.

The two clashed in midair, fire meeting shadow in a blinding explosion of energy. Kael felt the impact reverberate through his bond with the phoenix, but he held firm. Ryn's shadowblade sliced through the air, narrowly missing Kael as he dodged.

"You're strong," Ryn said, his tone almost mocking. "But you lack control. That phoenix will consume you, boy."

Kael gritted his teeth, focusing on the connection with the phoenix. "You don't know anything about us!"

He unleashed another wave of fire, forcing Ryn to retreat. The shadowwyvern snarled, its tail lashing out, but the phoenix darted aside with a speed that took even Kael by surprise.

"Good," Kael murmured to the phoenix. "Let's finish this."

A Moment of Triumph

Kael and the phoenix fought as one, their bond strengthening with every passing moment. Flames and shadows clashed in the storm, illuminating the sky with bursts of light. The battle reached its peak when Kael saw an opening—Ryn's shadowwyvern faltered, its wings clipping the edge of the Skyhold.

"Now!" Kael shouted. The phoenix dove, its body wreathed in golden fire. Kael channeled all his energy into the bond, feeling the phoenix's power surge through him. Together, they struck Ryn with a burst of flame, sending him and his wyvern spiraling into the darkness below.

As the Venators retreated, defeated and scattered, the Windcloaks let out a cheer. Kael landed the phoenix on the Skyhold's main platform, his body trembling with exhaustion. Thane and Eryndra approached, their faces a mix of relief and pride.

"You did it," Thane said, clapping Kael on the shoulder. "You held your ground."

Kael managed a small smile, the phoenix nuzzling his cheek. "We did it."

Eryndra stepped forward, her expression serious but not unkind. "This is only the beginning, Kael. Ryn may have fallen, but the Venators won't stop. You and your phoenix have a destiny to fulfill. Are you ready?"

Kael looked at the phoenix, its flames burning brighter than ever. "We're ready."
