Chereads / Beastsworn: The Awakening Pact / Chapter 23 - XXIII. The Final Trial

Chapter 23 - XXIII. The Final Trial

The air in the inner sanctum crackled with magic, thick and oppressive. Kael stood at the forefront, his phoenix flaring its wings wide, the fiery light illuminating the dim chamber. Opposite him, Ryn smirked, his chimera looming over him like a harbinger of destruction. Its three heads—wolf, serpent, and eagle—snarled, hissed, and shrieked in a cacophony of aggression.

"Your arrival saves me time," Ryn said, his voice dripping with arrogance. "The phoenix is the final piece I need to ascend beyond mortality. Surrender it, and I'll make your death swift."

Kael stepped forward, gripping the hilt of his blade tightly. "You'll have to take it from me."

Ryn's laughter echoed, cold and mocking. "As you wish." He raised a hand, the runes beneath him flaring with a sickly green light. The chimera charged.

Fire Against Shadow

The phoenix surged forward to meet the chimera, its flames roaring to life as it clashed with the beast. The wolf head snapped at the phoenix's wings, only to be repelled by a burst of fire. The serpent struck next, its fangs grazing the phoenix's feathers and leaving a trail of dark, venomous smoke. The eagle head screeched, launching a barrage of wind blades that forced the phoenix to retreat.

Kael didn't stand idle. He dashed into the fray, his blade glowing with the embersteel enchantment Eryndra had bestowed upon it. He swung at the chimera's serpent head, forcing it back, while the phoenix countered with a fiery dive at the eagle.

"Thane! Eryndra!" Kael shouted. "Keep the others back. This is between us."

Eryndra hesitated but nodded. "Be careful, Kael." She motioned for the Windcloaks and Greenreach tamers to hold the line at the sanctum's entrance.

Ryn's Dark Power

Ryn watched with a bemused expression before stepping into the glowing circle of runes. His hands moved in intricate patterns, and a dark mist began to rise from the floor.

"You cannot win," Ryn intoned. "The bond you share is a spark compared to the inferno I command."

The mist coalesced into shadowy tendrils that lashed out at Kael and the phoenix. Kael dodged one narrowly, but another caught him by the arm, sending a chill through his body. The phoenix screeched, its flames dimming as the tendrils ensnared its wings.

Kael gritted his teeth. "No! We're not losing here!" He reached out to the phoenix through their bond, feeling its struggle, its fire dampened by the oppressive shadows.

Trust me, Kael thought, focusing all his will into the connection. Let's burn brighter together.

The phoenix's eyes flared, its flames reigniting with a golden hue. It released a fiery shockwave, breaking free of the tendrils and driving them back toward Ryn.

The Chimera's Fury

The chimera, enraged by the phoenix's display, attacked with renewed ferocity. The wolf head lunged at Kael, its jaws snapping inches from his face. He rolled aside, slashing upward with his blade and leaving a searing cut across its snout.

The phoenix darted in, focusing its flames on the eagle head, which retaliated with a piercing screech. The serpent's tail whipped around, striking Kael and sending him sprawling across the chamber floor.

Kael gasped for air, his vision blurring. "Come on," he muttered, pulling himself to his feet. "We're not done yet."

The phoenix landed beside him, its presence a fiery beacon of strength. Kael placed a hand on its flank, their bond surging with renewed intensity.

"Let's finish this," Kael said, his voice steady.

The Climax

Ryn's chant reached a crescendo, and the runes beneath him flared brighter than ever. The shadows in the room thickened, coiling around him like a living armor.

"Witness the birth of a god!" Ryn roared, his voice echoing unnaturally.

Kael knew he had to act fast. He glanced at the phoenix. "Can you channel everything we have into one attack?"

The phoenix's gaze met his, and he felt its agreement through their bond. Together, they prepared for their final stand.

Kael charged forward, his blade blazing with phoenix fire. The phoenix soared into the air, gathering its flames into a concentrated orb of light. Ryn sneered, raising his hands to summon a wall of shadows, but Kael and the phoenix moved as one.

Kael leapt into the air, the phoenix diving in tandem. Their combined energy surged into Kael's blade, which glowed white-hot. He brought it down with all his strength, shattering Ryn's shadowy defenses and striking the chimera.

The chimera let out a final, deafening roar before collapsing in a heap. Ryn staggered, his armor of shadows crumbling as the runes beneath him flickered and died.

"No!" Ryn cried, his voice filled with desperation. "This cannot be!"

Kael landed heavily, his blade still glowing faintly. He pointed it at Ryn. "It's over."

Ryn sneered, his expression twisting with hatred. "You think this changes anything? You've only delayed the inevitable."

Before Kael could respond, Ryn uttered a final incantation, and the chamber began to shake. The walls cracked, and the ground split open.

"He's collapsing the fortress!" Eryndra shouted from the entrance. "We need to go!"

---

Escape and Reflection

Kael and the others fled the collapsing fortress, the phoenix carrying Kael through the crumbling ceiling. The Windcloaks and Greenreach tamers regrouped outside, watching as the fortress was consumed by a massive explosion of shadow and flame.

As the dust settled, Kael dismounted the phoenix, his body heavy with exhaustion. Eryndra approached him, placing a hand on his shoulder.

"You did it," she said softly.

Kael shook his head. "Ryn's gone, but his words... he said this wasn't the end. There's more out there. More Venators, more threats."

Eryndra nodded. "Then we'll face them. Together."

Kael looked to the phoenix, its flames dim but steady. The bond they shared felt stronger than ever, a connection forged in fire and tempered in battle.

"For now, we've earned a moment of peace," Kael said. "But I won't let my guard down."

As the sun rose over the Ashen Wastes, the Windcloaks and their allies began the long journey home, knowing that the fight for Kaela was far from over—but they were ready.
