Chapter 20 - XX. Shadows in the Aftermath

The Skyhold buzzed with the energy of recovery. Windcloaks moved about repairing the damages, tending to their wounded, and reinforcing their defenses. The storm that had raged during the battle had finally abated, leaving the sky clear and the air crisp.

Kael sat on the edge of a high balcony, staring out at the endless mountain range stretching into the horizon. His phoenix rested beside him, its feathers dimly glowing in the early morning light. It cooed softly, sensing Kael's unease.

"They're not done, are they?" Kael asked quietly, running a hand along the phoenix's sleek neck.

Thane stepped up behind him, his presence as steadying as always. "No. Ryn was just the beginning. The Venators don't retreat for long."

Kael turned to look at him. "Do you think he's still alive?"

Thane's face darkened. "Men like Ryn don't die easily. But even if he survived, you dealt him a heavy blow. That counts for something."

Kael sighed, leaning back. The weight of his choices bore down on him like never before. "Why me, Thane? Why is all of this happening to me?"

Thane crouched beside him, his expression softening. "The bond chose you, Kael. You didn't ask for it, but it's yours now. What matters isn't why it happened—it's what you do with it."

A Whisper of Betrayal

Later that day, Kael joined Eryndra and the other senior Windcloaks for a strategy meeting. The chamber felt heavy with the lingering tension of the recent attack.

Eryndra stood at the head of the room, her voice sharp and commanding. "The Venators will regroup. Their tactics are too deliberate for us to assume otherwise. We must strike before they recover."

A Windcloak named Lyra, a fierce woman bonded with a golden hawk, leaned forward. "But how do we find them? The Venators vanish like shadows when they're beaten."

Thane crossed his arms, his brow furrowed. "Not all shadows are loyal. I've heard whispers in the Wilds of dissent within their ranks. If we can find one willing to talk, it might lead us to their base."

Kael perked up, intrigued. "You think one of them would betray Ryn?"

Thane shrugged. "It's a slim chance, but Venators are ruthless. They don't exactly inspire loyalty among their own."

Eryndra nodded, her gaze turning to Kael. "If we pursue this, you'll need to come with us. The phoenix is more than just a weapon—it's a beacon. It may draw allies as well as enemies."

Kael hesitated, the responsibility weighing on him. "I'll do it," he said finally. "Whatever it takes."

The Hunt Begins

The next morning, Kael, Thane, and a small group of Windcloaks set out into the mountains. Shadowfang led the way, its sharp nose guiding them through the rugged terrain. The phoenix flew high above, scouting for danger.

The group moved cautiously, their eyes scanning every shadow for signs of an ambush. The mountains were vast and unforgiving, and Kael couldn't shake the feeling of being watched.

"Do you think we'll find someone willing to talk?" Kael asked Thane as they paused to rest near a rocky outcrop.

"If there's one thing I've learned, it's that desperation makes men do strange things," Thane replied, tossing Shadowfang a piece of dried meat. "Even the most loyal Venator might crack if it means saving their own hide."

As they prepared to move on, a faint sound caught Kael's attention. It was a low, mournful howl, carried on the wind.

Shadowfang stiffened, its ears swiveling toward the sound. The phoenix descended, landing beside Kael and letting out a wary chirp.

"What is it?" Kael asked, his hand instinctively resting on the phoenix's warm feathers.

Thane drew his blade, his expression grim. "We're not alone."

A Traitor's Bargain

The group followed the sound, eventually coming upon a narrow cave hidden behind a curtain of vines. The air inside was damp and cold, the walls slick with moisture. Kael's heart pounded as they ventured deeper, the phoenix's glow casting flickering shadows on the walls.

At the back of the cave, they found him—a lone Venator, slumped against the wall. His armor was dented and bloodied, and his beast, a mangled shadowhound, lay motionless at his side. He looked up as they approached, his eyes hollow.

"You've come to finish me off, haven't you?" he rasped, his voice weak.

Thane stepped forward, keeping his blade raised. "We'll finish you if we have to. But if you want to live, you'll tell us everything you know."

The Venator let out a bitter laugh, coughing as he did. "There's no 'living' after betraying the Venators. But if it means spitting in Ryn's face, I'll talk."

Kael stepped closer, his voice cautious. "Why would you betray him?"

The man's eyes flicked to Kael, narrowing. "You don't know what Ryn is planning, do you? What he's really after?"

Kael felt a chill run down his spine. "What do you mean?"

The Venator chuckled darkly. "Your phoenix isn't just a rare creature, boy. It's a key. And Ryn is looking for the lock."

Revelations

The man's words hung heavy in the air. Kael exchanged a glance with Thane, confusion and fear mirrored in their expressions.

"What key? What lock?" Kael pressed, his voice urgent.

The Venator smirked. "The phoenix is ancient. Its bond with you is more than chance—it's fate. Ryn knows something you don't, something buried in the old texts. He's looking for a way to control it."

Eryndra, who had remained silent until now, stepped forward, her expression grim. "Control it? To what end?"

"To end this world and start a new one," the Venator replied. "Ryn believes the phoenix holds the power to remake reality. With the right ritual, he can force it to burn away everything and rebuild in his image."

Kael's stomach turned. The idea of his bond being twisted into something so destructive was unthinkable.

"Where is he now?" Thane demanded, his blade glinting in the dim light.

The Venator hesitated, then sighed. "There's a fortress in the Ashen Wastes. That's where he'll be preparing. But you'll never reach him before he's ready."

Kael felt the phoenix's flames flare beside him, a surge of defiance burning through their bond. "We have to stop him," he said firmly. "Whatever it takes."

A New Mission

The Windcloaks left the cave with heavy hearts and a renewed sense of purpose. As they trekked back toward the Skyhold, Kael felt the weight of the Venator's words pressing down on him.

"Fate," he muttered, glancing at the phoenix. "What does that even mean for us?"

The phoenix chirped softly, nuzzling his cheek in a rare moment of affection. Kael smiled despite his fear, finding comfort in its warmth.

Thane placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "We'll figure it out, Kael. Together."

Eryndra nodded, her expression resolute. "The Windcloaks will stand with you. But this fight will demand everything you have—and more."

Kael stared out at the horizon, where dark clouds gathered once more. He didn't know what the future held, but one thing was certain: the battle against Ryn was far from over.
