Chereads / Beastsworn: The Awakening Pact / Chapter 22 - XXII. The Ashen Wastes

Chapter 22 - XXII. The Ashen Wastes

The Ashen Wastes stretched before them, a desolate expanse of gray and black. The air was heavy with the scent of sulfur, and the ground cracked beneath their boots as they advanced. Sparse, twisted trees dotted the landscape, their charred forms a grim reminder of the power that had scarred this land long ago.

Kael tightened his grip on the reins of his phoenix, which walked beside him, its fiery presence a stark contrast to the lifeless surroundings. The Windcloaks, the Greenreach clans, and their beasts moved in a loose formation behind him, their expressions wary.

"Not exactly the most welcoming place," Thane muttered, Shadowfang sniffing the air beside him.

Eryndra surveyed the horizon, her face set in grim determination. "This was once fertile land, long before the Venators laid claim to it. Ryn's rituals have poisoned it, just as he plans to poison the rest of the world."

Kael felt a knot tighten in his stomach. Every step closer to the Venators' stronghold brought him closer to a confrontation he wasn't sure he was ready for. But the phoenix at his side radiated calm strength, and its presence steadied him.

"We're not turning back," Kael said, his voice firmer than he expected. "Whatever Ryn's planning, we stop it here."

The Venator Fortress

As the group crested a ridge, the Venator fortress came into view. It was a massive structure carved into the side of a jagged cliff, its walls bristling with defenses. Dark banners bearing the Venator sigil—a snarling beast with fiery eyes—fluttered in the hot wind.

Kael's heart sank at the sight of the countless figures moving along the walls and in the courtyards below. The Venators were prepared for war.

"They've fortified themselves well," said Arden, the Greenreach leader, his emerald drake growling softly beside him. "This won't be easy."

Eryndra nodded. "We can't afford a full assault. We need to find a way inside without alerting the entire fortress."

Thane glanced at Kael. "You and the phoenix might be our ticket in. A diversion—something big enough to draw their attention—could give us the opening we need."

Kael stared at the fortress, dread pooling in his stomach. "You're asking me to be bait."

Thane smirked. "You've got a flair for it."

Kael sighed, turning to the phoenix. "Guess it's just you and me, huh?"

The phoenix let out a low trill, its eyes glinting with determination.

A Fiery Entrance

Under the cover of darkness, Kael and the phoenix approached the fortress. The plan was simple: create enough chaos to pull the Venators' attention away from the main gates, allowing the rest of the force to breach the walls.

"Ready?" Kael whispered, his heart pounding in his chest.

The phoenix let out a sharp cry, its wings igniting in brilliant flames. Kael climbed onto its back, gripping its reins tightly as it leapt into the air. The beast's fiery glow lit up the night as it soared toward the fortress.

Arrows whistled through the air as the Venators spotted them, but the phoenix's swift movements kept them just out of reach. Kael directed it toward one of the outer towers, where a group of Venators had gathered. With a powerful beat of its wings, the phoenix unleashed a torrent of fire, engulfing the tower in an explosion of light and heat.

The Venators shouted in alarm, their forces scrambling to respond. Kael guided the phoenix in a series of daring maneuvers, drawing their attention away from the gates. He could only hope the others were making their move.

The Breach

While Kael and the phoenix sowed chaos above, Eryndra, Thane, and the others moved swiftly through the shadows toward the gates. Using ropes and grappling hooks, they scaled the walls, dispatching guards silently as they went.

Shadowfang led the charge into the courtyard, its fangs flashing as it took down a Venator guard. The other beasts followed, their tamers moving with precision and efficiency. The Windcloaks and Greenreach clans fought as one, their combined strength overwhelming the disoriented Venators.

Eryndra rallied the group, her voice cutting through the din of battle. "Secure the courtyard! We hold this ground until Kael rejoins us!"

Confrontation in the Sky

Above the fortress, Kael faced a new threat. A group of Venator tamers had taken to the air, their beasts circling him like vultures. One of them, a man riding a massive black wyvern, pointed a sword at Kael.

"You think you can challenge us, boy?" the man sneered. "You're nothing but a child playing with fire."

Kael gritted his teeth, guiding the phoenix into a steep dive. The wyvern and its rider gave chase, the air crackling with energy as the two beasts clashed mid-flight. The phoenix's flames burned fiercely, forcing the wyvern back, but the Venators were relentless.

"You're stronger than this," Kael whispered to the phoenix, his bond with it surging. "Show them what you can do."

The phoenix let out a deafening cry, its body glowing brighter than ever. With a mighty flap of its wings, it unleashed a shockwave of fire that sent the Venator beasts scattering. The black wyvern spiraled downward, its rider cursing as they disappeared into the shadows below.

Kael guided the phoenix back toward the fortress, his heart racing. The battle was far from over, but they had gained the upper hand.

The Inner Sanctum

Reuniting with the others, Kael dismounted the phoenix and joined Thane and Eryndra in the heart of the fortress. The walls were scorched, and the air was thick with smoke. The Venators had retreated deeper into the structure, leaving behind a trail of destruction.

"We've driven them back," Thane said, his blade dripping with blood. "But Ryn's still in there. We need to end this now."

Kael nodded, his resolve hardening. "Then let's finish it."

Together, they pushed forward, their beasts leading the way. The fortress grew darker and more oppressive the deeper they went, the shadows seeming to pulse with malevolent energy.

At last, they reached the inner sanctum—a cavernous chamber lit by flickering torches. At its center stood Ryn, his imposing figure framed by an intricate circle of glowing runes. His beast, a monstrous chimera with three heads—wolf, serpent, and eagle—snarled at their approach.

"You've come far, boy," Ryn said, his voice dripping with malice. "But you're too late. The ritual is almost complete."

Kael stepped forward, the phoenix at his side. "Not if I stop you."

Ryn laughed, raising his hands. "Then come, Kael. Show me what your bond is truly worth."
