Chapter 9 - Chapter 9 - Susan

"Jack, please pull over." A car stopped right in front of a large billboard with a makeup advertisement on it. The model had a serene and ethereal air about her, and her face was delicate and beautiful. The person seated in the car gazed out of the window and stared at the billboard with a mysterious emotion. "Would you look at that, I think it's time to put my plan into action... Let's go." The car drove off into the night...

The next day, all everyone talked about was the interview. The Channel had released a public statement and apology;

"We would like to apologise on behalf of our host, Miss Elanor Teri, for the gross disrespect she showed a guest on the show; Miss Eunice Parker. However, we would like to inform the general public that we had absolutely no idea Miss Elanor would misconduct herself that way. She went off script, and none of the claims she made tally with the views of our station. She has been fired and will be facing other severe repercussions." The statement was followed with copies of the actual scripts which showed the questions Elanor was supposed to ask.

"Woah! Did she really get fired?"

"Gosh serves her right!"

"Wasn't that a bit too excessive?"

"Poster above how would you feel if some tv host continuously asked you private matters you weren't comfortable with?"...

Eunice spun to and fro on her swivel chair, smiling to herself. Although she was initially surprised Elanor was immediately fired, she didn't think too much of it. The company probably wanted to save face, that's why they took such drastic measures. This was just round one of her revenge spree. She chuckled coldly. She got back to work in high spirits, soflty humming a tune. After a few minutes, she heard the ringtone of her personal phone. She took the phone out of her bag. She stared at the screen warily. Why was this person calling her now? It had been so long since they last met, was everything alright? She let it ring for a few more minutes before picking up.

"Hello...uhm okay... I'll be right there... okay." Eunice switched off her laptop and rushed out of the company ro the location she was asked to meet up with the caller.

At Sunrise cafe;

Susan hung up the phone and took a sip of her coffee occasionally staring at the entrance. She had purposefully picked a location close to Eunice's company so it wouldn't take long till she arrived.

A few minutes later, Eunice arrived at the location, a cafe just a stone throw away from her workplace. The moment she entered, she spotted her former mother-in-law already seated at a table. Susan looked up to see Eunice's stunning figure at the entrance. She quickly made her way over to her and enveloped her into a deep hug. "Goodness, it's been so long, hasn't it?" Susan pulled away to get a good look at her. "You've grown up so much... come sit, sit!" She led her to their table and offered the chair opposite her's. She gave her a warm-hearted smile. Eunice could only smile back awkwardly and take the seat offered.

After Eunice had sat down, Susan signalled over for the waitress to come and take their orders. Just get me another cup of coffee and some cheesecake as well as some orange juice and a slice of chocolate cake for my daughter here. And please be snappy about it."

Right away, Ma'am." The waitress left with their orders. She didn't dare to waste another minute with the order. Who didn't know the Mistress of the Crestwood family. Getting on her bad side could only spell doom. It was already a miracle that she had decided to meet her guest here, she had even rented out the whole cafe just for her meeting.

However, Eunice felt as though she was sitting on needles. She felt very uncomfortable and, most of all, guilty. After all these years, Susan still remembered her food preferences. "Don't worry dear, we'll eat soon." Susan assured her, and Eunice only replied with a slight nod. "How have you been, my dear?" Susan asked. "I've been well... um, what about you, m...mom?" Eunice tried to steer the conversation away from herself but found it quite difficult to address Susan.

Eunice had left the Crestwood family house suddenly and never informed anyone of her departure. In fact, the rest of the family only found out about the divorce much later. She had left for Europe soon after and cut off all contact with the Crestwoods, including Susan, the only woman who had actually treated her like a daughter.

"Ah! Why are you being so distant? I'm still your mom, am I not? There's no need to stand on ceremony with me." Susan placed her hand on the table, gesturing for Eunice to place her hands in hers. Eunice held back the tears threatening to flow out from her eyes as she placed her over Susan's and gave them a tight squeeze.

Just then, the waitress appeared with their food. "Oh, our food is here!" Susan took both their foods of the tray hurriedly and urged Eunice to start eating. They enjoyed their meal while having little chats and conversations about the world of business and the entertainment circle. The tensed and awkward atmosphere earlier had totally dissipated as they laughed and gossiped like old times.

After they had finished their meal, Susan began; "Actually my dear, there's a reason I wanted to meet with you today apart from just catching up." Eunice wiped her lips with a napkin and gestured for Susan to go on. "You see, dear... Cough! Cough!" Susan suddenly coughed violently into a handkerchief. Sure she was choking on saliva she quickly handed her a glass of water when she noticed blood stains on the kerchief Susan had used. "Mom! What's going on?" Eunice began to panic and rushed to her side.

"It's alright." Susan tried to ease her concern. Eunice immediately stopped in her tracks. No way, right? It couldn't be. "It's back, isn't it?" Her voice trailed off. Susan nodded her head affirmatively. Eunice slumped in her seat in a daze. "You're going to be okay, right?" she asked with a shaky tinge in her voice. Susan said nothing but smiled softly. Eunice began to tear up. Susan was never one to let anyone feel any pain or worry because of her much like her own son she never showed her true emotions. From her lack of response, Eunice couldn't imagine what she was going through right now. "It will be alright, dear, don't worry." Susan wiped away the tears that had begun to fall from Eunice's eyes.
