Erin ran all the way home, tears streaming down his face. He couldn't believe what had happened. He had never felt so scared and alone in his life. He had hoped that coming to a new school would be a fresh start, but it seemed like the bullies were following him everywhere.
He burst into his room, slamming the door shut. He threw himself onto his bed, burying his face in his pillow. He couldn't stop crying.
He thought about Jay, about how brave he had been to stand up for him. He thought about how much he cared about Jay, and how much he wanted to protect him.
He picked up his phone and dialed Jay's number. He was surprised when Jay answered on the first ring.
"Hey, Erin," Jay said, his voice weak and strained. "I'm okay. Don't worry."
"Jay, I'm so sorry," Erin said, his voice cracking with emotion. "I should have stayed with you. I didn't want to see you get hurt."
"It's okay," Jay said. "I'm fine. I'm just a little sore."
"Are you sure?" Erin asked. "I'm so worried about you."
"I'm really okay," Jay said. "But I want to see you. I need to see you."
Erin agreed to meet Jay at the park later that evening. He couldn't wait to see Jay again, to tell him how much he cared about him, and to promise him that he would never let anything bad happen to him again.
