Chapter 16 - Chapter16: Lessons In Teamwork

PAGE 1

The next day. Setting: Site 7 in a training room similar to the room Devlon and Wendy fought each other in.

Elliot lies on the floor on his side, pushing himself off of the floor, frustrated. Wendy with her hands on her hips, and Devlon crossing his arms, stand over him.

Wendy: "Done already? What happened to that motivational stuff you were saying yesterday?"

Elliot: "Don't count me out yet, but…"

Elliot stands to his feet.

Elliot: "Isn't this a bit much? Y'all attacking me at the same time!"

Devlon: "I wanted to see how well you'd do at such a disadvantage. We can take it down a notch for now."

Wendy steps forward, popping her knuckles.

Wendy: "Here, let's continue where we left off when we were training at the hotel."

Devlon: "I'll sit this one out."

Elliot: "Hand to hand combat, right?"

Wendy: "Right. Don't let your guard down this time."

PAGE 2

Wendy comes in with a punch. Elliot quickly dodges left.

Elliot: Woah!

She swings with her other fist, which Elliot dodges by ducking.

Elliot: That was close!

Still crouched from ducking, his face is now near Wendy's abdomen.

Wendy: I wasn't expecting him to dodge the second one.

Elliot: An opening!

As Elliot charges in to tackle her, his face is met with Wendy's knee.

Elliot: "Ack!"

Wendy: "Don't assume I'll only throw punches."

Close up of Wendy's face. She looks down with a surprised expression.

Wendy: "What?"

PAGE 3

Elliot has Wendy's leg with both hands as he looks up to her with a confident smile.

Elliot: "I didn't assume." Gotcha!

Wendy: "Hey!" So he took the hit so he could grab me, huh?

Wendy twists her body and kicks Elliot in the side of the head, forcing him to let go.

Elliot: "Oof!"

Wendy: "That was a pretty smart move. Reckless, but smart. Why did you stop after you got my leg?"

Elliot gets up, holding his head.

Elliot: "I dunno. I didn't really think that far ahead."

Wendy: "What? You thought you won when you grabbed hold of my leg?"

Elliot: "Well, it just sounds stupid when you say it like that."

Wendy signals Elliot to come at her.

Wendy: "Let's keep going. You're ready for round two, right? Show me that endurance. "

Elliot: "Yeah. I'm all good to go." That spin kick gave me vertigo.

PAGE 4

Scene change. While Elliot trains, Forte sits in his office, talking on the phone and looking at a monitor.

Forte: "I'd say everything's going well. Our newcomers are training hard for the assessment. How's it going on your end? Ready for the next phase?"

Somewhere close by, outside, Franciscus, the older man that Iris referred to as "father," is on the other end of the phone call. On this sunny day, he stands in a small forest-like area.

Franciscus: "Not even close. There is still much work to be done."

Looking ahead, he holds his hand over the phone.

Franciscus: "Again, Iris! Put more strength into it!"

Iris stands in a grassy area surrounded by trees at a distance from Franciscus.

Iris swings a quick diagonal down slash with a sword. She appears to be practicing her swings.

Iris: "HA!"

PAGE 5

Iris's legs begin to shake.

Franciscus: "Stop playing around, Iris! You have to concentrate."

She looks up in a daze, her eyes beginning to roll back.

Franciscus's frustration turns to worry as she falls to her knees.

Fransiscus: "Iris?"

He quickly runs to her aid, kneeling down to check on her.

Iris: "I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I just…I can't do it anymore. I just…"

She begins to cry.

PAGE 6

Iris: "Can we please stop. I…I just can't!" *sob*

Franciscus lays a compassionate hand on Iris's shoulder.

Franciscus: She's exerted herself. I have to keep in mind that she's only a child. "I guess it cannot be helped."

He picks her up on his back, giving her a piggyback.

Iris: "You're not mad?"

Franciscus: "Of course not. You made a lot of progress. Let's go. You need rest."

As he walks her away from the area, Iris cracks a soft smile.

Iris: "I didn't think you'd ever give piggy backs. That's something Omar would do. ^_^"

Franciscus: "I'll have you know I can be fun, too."

PAGE 7

Close up on the two, Fransiscus continues to piggyback away from the area.

Iris: "You really think I can become powerful?"

Franciscus: "Believe it or not, there is much more power to draw out of you."

As they leave the area, a more zoomed out bird's-eye view of the area shows where Iris was. The view reveals that every single tree surrounding the spot where Iris was standing have all been cleanly diced to pieces. Not a single tree within the circumference of 20 feet is left standing.

PAGE 8

Scene change. Elliot, Devlon, and Wendy are back in the lower level room with the large monitor. They're facing the monitor while Forte faces them next to the monitor.

Elliot: "So, what're we doing here, Fortz?"

Forte: "I thought this would be a good time for you guys to see some teamwork in action."

Annoyed, Elliot throws his arms out in protest as he looks at his comrades.

Elliot: "Man, you shoulda seen us take out that No Face!"

Devlon: "He's right. It was like a three piece combo! You would have been proud."

Elliot: "3 piece combo?" Now that you mention it, I'm kinda hungry.

Forte: "Wendy told me all about it. Nonetheless, I think it would be good for you. Come on in, guys!"

Devlon, Wendy, and Elliot turn around to see a group walking through the door. Wendy looks displeased.

Wendy: "Oh, great."

Devlon: "This should be good."

Jasmine, Terry, and Chase enter the room.

Chase: "We'd be glad to show you a thing or two."

Jasmine: "Yeah, we'll show you what not to do."

PAGE 9

Setting: Simulation Room. Jasmine, Chase, and Terry stand in the middle of a blank room. They're waiting for things to start up in the training room.

Terry: "Anybody catch which rank this is?"

Chase: "He set us at a D rank just to show the newcomers what teamwork looks like."

Jasmine: "Yeah, so no need to worry, Terr Bear."

Terry turns to Jasmine as the background becomes blurry and gray.

Terry: "I'm not worried! I just wanna make sure Forte doesn't take any more Jasmine requests!"

Jasmine: "C'mon! A survival mission to see how many waves of 2nd graders you can beat up with an occasional 5th grade boss? That sounds-"

Chase: "It sounds very Jasmine-like. Now let's show Ms. Wendy what our teamwork looks like."

In just moments, they're now standing in the middle of the street of what looks like an abandoned neighborhood at night.

The three face similar enemies as Devlon, Wendy, and Elliot did when they entered the simulation room; a mob of zombie bots surrounding them.

PAGE 10

The team is surrounded by robo zombies. In the distance, the robo baby from the previous training session can be seen.

Terry: "Alright, let's do this!"

Chase: "I'll take care of the baby. Cover me."

First person view (Chase's view) of the baby in the distance. The baby, standing on its robotic tentacles, is walking behind a building.

Chase: "If you think you can hide behind some buildings, you've got another thing comin'."

Though the robotic baby is behind the building, the full outline of the baby is visible in Chase's eyes, almost like an x-ray vision.

Chase: "Gotcha."

PAGE 11

Terry jumps in front of Chase to kick a zombie bot, a trail of fire following the kick.

Terry: "You find 'em yet?"

Chase: "Yeah. But I'm double checking to make sure there aren't civilians inside the building. Just cover me a bit longer."

Chase concentrates while Terry throws punches and kicks at the bots, flames attached to each attack.

Terry: "Alright. Do your thing."

Moments later, Chase gives Terry a thumbs up.

Chase: "Okay, looks like we're clear. Ohhhh, wait."

Terry: "What?"

Chase looks ahead, following something in the sky.

Chase: "So that's what the baby was doing."

Coming from behind the building where the baby is, a missile shoots into the sky.

Chase: "It was preparing a missile, not hiding."

PAGE 12

Chase's eyes glow a bright red behind his shades.

He fires a red beam at the incoming missile, blowing it up in midair.

Terry backs up next to Chase, ready to guard him.

Chase: "Hey, I'm gonna charge for another shot. When he prepares another missile, I'll blast it and catch him in the explosion. Distract the bots, will ya?"

Terry: "What do you think I've been doing? Whatever. Hey Jazz! Quit playing around!"

At a distance from the other two, Jasmine stands with her arms crossed, surrounded by bots. She rolls her eyes and lets out a sarcastic cry.

Jasmine: "Oh no! I'm surrounded. What ever shall I do? Somebody, save me!"

Back in the room with the monitor, back in the real world, stands Unit 17 (consisting of Devlon, Wendy, and Elliot). Elliot looks a little worried as he watches the screen.

Elliot: "Oh shoot! They got her surrounded!"

Wendy: "I'm sure she's fine."

Devlon: "She is."

Devlon lets out a confident chuckle.

Devlon: "Honestly, I feel sorry for the bots."

PAGE 13

Back to Jasmine's perspective. One of the bots charges right at her. Jasmine raises a brow with a cocky smile.

Jasmine: "Oh, we have a volunteer to rescue me…"

The bot tries to punch Jasmine, but she easily blocks with one hand.

Jasmine: "From absolute boredom."

Jasmine's body begins to liquify, diving into the bot's abdomen. As Jasmine's liquid body seeps into the boy's body, the entire front side of the bot's abdomen is completely frozen.

Ice forms on the bot's back, Jasmine's liquid body escaping out of its back.

Now having come completely out of the bot's back, Jasmine's body solidifies back into a humanoid form.

The ice around the bot's body shatters, leaving a large hole in the bot's body. The bot falls lifeless onto the ground. Jasmine nonchalantly raises a finger.

Jasmine: "Next."

PAGE 14

Jasmine gives the surrounding bots a cynical smile as she makes a proposal.

Jasmine: "How about a game! Let's see if I have what it takes to instill fear into some lifeless bots!"

Perspective shift. Back in the room with the monitor. Elliot and the others watch on. Elliot looks amazed by Jasmine's skill. Devlon shakes his head.

Elliot: "Woah! She's taking em all on! She's good!"

Devlon: She's such a showoff. "Yeah, Jasmine has a very unique ability with water. Took me a long time to get used to it when we fought."

Wendy: "You speak pretty highly of her."

Devlon turns his head to Wendy, caught off guard.

Devlon: "Huh? Yeah, I guess so."

Elliot quickly and curiously pokes his head in Devlon's face.

Elliot: "Wait, you two aren't a thing, are you?"

Devlon: "A thing?" What does he mean?

Wendy: "You know, like, together. With feelings and stuff."

Devlon is thrown off again, this time with a bit of redness appearing on his cheeks.

Devlon: "What? No! What makes you think that?"

Elliot faces the monitor again with a satisfied look.

Elliot: "Just checkin'."

PAGE 15

As Jasmine continues to slay the bots on the monitor, Wendy pokes at Elliot, teasing him.

Wendy: "Uh-huh. There's a reason you wanted to know, Elliot."

Elliot: "What? Naw, it's not like that." Though, she is super cute.

Devlon: "Confusion aside, I hope you're taking note."

Perspective shift. Back to the simulation. There are fewer bots surrounding Jasmine. They're beginning to take steps backwards, away from Jasmine. Jasmine looks pleased.

Jasmine: "Ahh, so you can experience fear. Ready for the finale?"

Terry: (off screen) "Jazz!"

Terry runs to Jasmie, flame kicking a few bots along the way.

Terry: "Yo, Chase found the boss. But he needs the bots around him to be distracted."

Jasmine tilts her head and glares at Terry.

Jasmine: "So you left him alone while he's concentrating, just for you to tell me that?"

Terry: "Err…"

Jasmine: "Let's just make a quick smoke screen."

Terry: "Good idea!"

Terry raises both hands above his head, flames rising from his hands.

PAGE 16

As Terry holds up the flames, Jasmine shoots water at his hands, creating clouds of steam.

The surrounding area now full of enough steam to give it a very foggy atmosphere, the remaining bots search for their targets.

Jasmine: "Alright Chase. They're blinded. Well, so are we, so it's all on you!"

Shift to Chase's perspective. Chase focuses on the distant baby, who's still hiding behind the building across the street.

Chase: "Preciate it!" Now let's see…

Through Chase's x-ray vision, the baby bot prepares to fire the next missile.

Chase: "Yep. Time to say good night."

Chase fires a red blast of energy in the direction of the bot.

The blast crashes through the building, detonating on impact when it reaches the baby.

PAGE 17

Jasmine, Terry, and Chase watch as the explosion takes out the baby, as well as everything else within half a block's radius.

Jasmine: "Ah. Pretty fireworks."

Chase: "Alright, let's clean up the rest."

Using his special vision, Chase fires multiple shots at the remaining bots in the street.

The fog begins to clear. The three members of Unit 16, consisting of Jasmine, Terry, and Chase, are the only ones left standing.

Chase: "Heh. Mission accomplished. Nice work, team."

Terry: "Piece of cake."

PAGE 18

Scene change. Back in the room with the monitor. A door on the side opens.

The team returns to the room to meet Unit 17.

Jasmine: "Well, watchya think?"

Wendy: "I won't lie. It was impressive."

Jasmine walks right past Wendy towards Elliot.

Jasmine: "Wasn't talking to you, but thanks for the opinion, I guess. So, whadya think?"

Wendy looks furious, her hair rising in a Super Saiyan fashion.

Wendy: In her sleep! I'll kill her in her sleep!

Elliot: "Uh yeah. Y'all did y'all thing out there."

Forte: "I hope you were able to learn something from watching their teamwork. Tomorrow we will continue intense training to prepare for the Assessment Games."

PAGE 19

Forte leans over towards Elliot's ear.

Forte: "In the meantime, you should go upstairs."

Elliot: "Huh? Why?"

Forte: "Sorta kinda haven't checked in on our visitors in hours, so I'm cutting your training short today. Go catch up with your peeps."

Elliot takes off, running out of the door.

Elliot: "Man, Fortz is a cool dude for that."

Scene changes to Kei's perspective. He and Nana sit together in a room with a luxury hotel setup.

Nana: "Big bro, I have a question."

Kei: "What is it?"

Nana: "Why is Elliot so nice all the time?"

Kei: "Huh? I mean, he's a nice guy. Where's this question coming from? Is being nice a bad thing?"

Nana shakes her head.

Nana: "He's just always buying me gifts and stuff like that. And he's always really happy to see me."

Kei lowers his head, looking at Nana with a side eye.

Kei: "I see. It doesn't…make you uncomfortable, does it?"

Nana: "No. I think he's lonely."

Kei: "Lonely?"

PAGE 20

Nana kicks her feet (since her feet can't touch the floor from her seat).

Nana: "He keeps going to different places to call home. And he always calls us brother and sister. Maybe he calls us that because he needs a family?"

Kei's eyes begin to water.

Kei: I can't expect her to remember. She was a toddler, afterall. "Well…" I really don't know what to say.

Nana: "But I'm worried about him. He was so mad when he hit that cop. Is his transformation making him mean?"

Kei: "Transformation?"

Nana looks up with concerned eyes.

Nana: "Into an irregular. He's really nice. I don't want him to get in trouble!"

Moments later, Elliot makes it to Kei's and Nana's guest room. They both look upset.

Elliot: "What's up, you two?"

Nana: "Well…"

Kei: "El…We need to talk."

Elliot: "Bout what?"

Kei lets out a sigh.

Kei: "You being an irregular changes everything."
