Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: Overkill Much? The Rising Hero.

PAGE 1

Setting: Wendy's apartment.

Wendy kneels down, holding her side where her faceless adversary grazed her. Devlon bends a knee behind her, trying to help.

Devlon: "Here, lemme help you up."

Wendy: "I'm fine, really. Just fell all of a sudden."

Devlon takes a closer look at her, ponting at her leg right above the ankle.

Devlon: "That's why. You probably didn't notice it, but that thing got your leg."

Wendy: "Figures. Let's just get outta here."

Devlon starts to bring his arms around Wendy, but hesitates.

Devlon: "Here, let me help you up."

Wendy pushes herself up. Devlon stands up with her. His hands still hover around Wendy, but again he hesitates.

Devlon: "Hey, uh…let me um…" Is it okay to touch her?

Wendy: "I got it, okay?"

Wendy collapses to one knee again. Devlon quickly kneels to her level.

He looks her in the eye with a sternness that Wendy didn't know he was capable of.

Devlon: "Wendy!"

His sternness turns to a look of compassion.

Devlon: "I'm sorry. I'm sorry that I treated you like you were helpless. But please. Let me help you."

Wendy looks at Devlon, but doesn't say a word.

PAGE 2

Moments later, they're both in the living room. Devlon sits in a chair facing Wendy. Wendy's on a sofa chair, stretching out her leg to rest her foot on Devlon's lap as Devlon rolls up her pant leg in order to wrap bandages around it.

Wendy: "Ow!"

Devlon: "S-sorry. Anyway, how's it feeling?"

Wendy: "It's fine. So…"

Wendy awkwardly looks to the side.

Wendy: "Any idea what that thing was?"

Devlon: "No clue. Can't say I've ever seen anything like it."

Wendy: I wonder where it came from.

Wendy gets up and tests it out by applying pressure as she stands.

Wendy: "Anyway, thanks."

Devlon: "No problem. Do you uh, do you need help getting to the door?"

Wendy: "What? Still think I'm some old lady in her mid twenties?"

Devlon looks away in guilt.

Devlon: "Oh. I'm sorry about that."

Wendy: "I was kidding. Gosh, you're so tense. Do you need some more tea?"

Wendy and Devlon head toward the door to exit.

Wendy: "Anyway, we've gotta get back to Elliot. That random encounter with that thing's got me worried."

Devlon: "You sure you're good?"

Wendy: I'm walking, aren't I? "You asking every two seconds is getting annoying real fa-"

A light bulb appears over Wendy's head. She eyes Devlon from the side.

Wendy: "You really wanna help, huh?"

Devlon: "Yeah, what do you need?"

PAGE 3

Moments later, the two are outside. Though Wendy's in the car with her feet hanging out the window. She sips a glass of wine and chillaxes. Devlon, on the other hand, struggles to carry large bags to the trunk.

Devlon: Why does one person need all this stuff? "Are you sure you need all this to move back to site 7?"

Wendy begins to hold her abdomen, clearly faking her pain.

Wendy: "Ooohhh, my injuries! I think I might cough up blood from a ruptured organ."

Devlon: "Okay, okay. I'll get the rest of the stuff."

Moments later, they're on the road again. Wendy drives with Devlon in the passenger's seat.

Devlon: "So what. Is that it?"

Wendy: "I was enjoying all the help until you offered to drive." There's no way in hell I'm letting you drive.

Devlon looks down at Wendy's leg, clearly concerned.

Devlon: "But Wendy, your foot-"

Wendy: "No thank you. I'd like to live to see another day."

Wendy makes it to Kei's house and parks.

Wendy: "Anyway, let's see if Elliot's still here. We gotta pick up his stuff and go back to Site 7."

They knock on the door.

PAGE 4

Kei slowly opens the door.

Kei: "Yes?"

Wendy: "Hi. We're looking for Elliot."

Kei looks worried.

Kei: "Uh-you're that cop from earlier."

Kei steps outside on the porch with Devlon and Wendy.

Kei: "Officer, did Elliot do something wrong? Is he on probation or something?" Please tell me it isn't too bad.

Devlon: "We can't exactly answer that right now."

Wendy: "We're just trying to help him with a situation, but we're in a hurry. Is he still home?"

Kei: "Huh? No, you've got the wrong house. I'm his friend, but he doesn't live here."

Devlon: "Wendy, why'd you drop him off with a friend?"

Wendy: "This is where he told me to stop. I just assumed it was his home."

She pulls out her keys and heads toward the car.

Wendy: "Well, we have to hurry."

Devlon: "Can you tell us where he lives?"

Kei looks very concerned.

Kei: So he got himself into trouble again, huh? "Hey..are you here to take him away again?"

PAGE 5

Devlon: "Huh? What are you talking about?"

Kei: "He got in trouble, right? Are you two here to…move him to another home."

Close up on Wendy, who seems curious about the nature of the question.

Wendy: Another home? "It's not like that. We're here to help with something else. But it's urgent. Could you help us out with an address?"

Kei: "Sure, but take me with you, officerrrr…"

Wendy: "Wendy. Pleasure to meet you. But, also, no."

Kei: "Then how will you know where to find him?"

Devlon and Wendy huddle.

Devlon: "We can't take him with us. What if there are more of those faceless things?"

Wendy: "I know. But I don't know how Elliot's doing. Let's just take him real quick, grab Elliot, and go. If there's a situation, I'll call backup to get his friend out."

Close up of a small pair of arms gripping Kei's arm.

Little Kid's Voice: "Take me with you, big brother!"

A small girl comes up from behind Kei. She stands a little shorter than Iris. For a real world reference, her brown skin and thick wavy hair gives off dark-skinned Puerto Rican appearance.

Kei: "What? It wouldn't be legal to leave her alone, right? She comes with."

 End of scene.

PAGE 6

Scene changes back to Elliot's perspective. Elliot and Stone stand over the dead faceless's body, smoke rising from its body as a result of getting tased.

Elliot: "This thing was after… irregulars?"

Stone: "That's right, kid."

Elliot: "Wait…if you know this about them, does that mean there are more?"

Stone crosses his arms.

Stone: "Yeah. Don't know where they come from or how they detect irregulars, but it's just another reason for irregulars to lay low."

Elliot: "Lay low? Why? Once I get my powers under control, I'ma get wild with it."

Stone: "Bad idea, kid."

Stone walks a little closer.

Stone: "Ever wonder why you don't see irregulars out in public?"

Elliot: "I mean…we're two irregulars just talking in broad daylight right now, aren't we?"

Stone: "You didn't notice, huh? Take a look at these houses."

A few houses around the area are displayed, but they appear to be abandoned.

Stone: "Rumors of irregular activity have risen. And the news propaganda's got everybody spooked. People in this neighborhood ditched everything weeks ago."

Elliot: "I didn't think it was that bad."

Stone: "Oh yeah? Lemme ask you.You have any run-ins with a cop since you discovered who you are?"

Elliot: "I mean…"

Suddenly, something catches Stone's attention from the corner of his eye.

PAGE 7

Another faceless creature dashes in at Elliot and Stone.

Stone: "Another one?! We'll talk more after this."

The faceless thing goes for a punch, which Elliot and Stone dodge away from each other, leaving the faceless in between them.

The faceless thing turns to "face" Stone.

Close up on the faceless thing's legs as its feet push off the ground.

The faceless dashes in on Stone.

Stone: "What the!" This one's a lot faster!

PAGE 8

Stone raises both arms. As he does so, an 8 foot stone wall rises with the motion of his arms.

Stone: "That was a close one-"

Stone has no time to rest as the faceless creature breaks through the wall, fist first. Its fierce punch connects with Stone, sending him back a few feet and landing on his back.

Stone tries to get up, but the faceless is already in the air, having leapt, preparing to come down hard for another attack.

Stone puts his hands up, motioning two pillars of earth to rise into the airborne faceless thing's body. The pillars crash into both sides of the faceless's body.

 PAGE 9

The faceless falls and crashes to the ground in front of Stone. He finally finds time to stand up. As he extends a hand toward the faceless creature, the earth beneath the grounded creature begins to move around in a swirling motion, as if the ground was beginning to liquify.

Stone: "It's time I bury you alive."

The faceless gets up on all fours, preparing to charge at Stone again. However, its hands and feet begin sinking into the ground like quicksand. Stone glares at the faceless.

Stone: What's it doing?

Close up on the faceless's arm. Its arm is growing in mass, from a slim arm to a very bulky one.

The faceless pulls the bulky arm out of the ground, forming a fist.

It smashes its fist into the ground, creating a cloud of dust.

PAGE 10

The smoke clears and reveals the faceless, standing. Though its appearance has changed. It stands more muscular than before.

Stone: "What the! I've never seen this type before!" Is it evolving or something?

The faceless dashes in on Stone. Stone himself begins to sink into the ground in order to escape, but…

Stone: He's faster than before!

As the faceless closes in, Stone's entire body manages to sink into the ground. Only his head is sticking out as he continues to descend.

Stone: Will I make it in time?

Stone completely sinks into the ground.

Stone: That was close-

The faceless smashes its fist into the ground, breaking the ground beneath.

PAGE 11

From a distance, Elliot watches on, unsure of what to do.

Elliot: "Did he make it outta there?" I can't tell!

Seconds later, Stone rises out of the ground next to Elliot, startling him. Stone isn't completely unscathed. He's holding a bruised arm.

Elliot: "Woah! How'd you get here?"

Stone: "I sank into the earth so that I could avoid its attack and gain some distance. I made my way to you underground."

Elliot notices Stone's arm.

Elliot: "Are you okay?"

Stone: "Yeah. But it clipped me when I tried to escape. Now would be a good time to show us your abilities."

The faceless notices them and begins to charge at both of them. Elliot plants his feet and aims both hands at the incoming faceless.

Elliot: "Yeah. I just hope something comes out this time."

Stone: "You mean you don't know how to use your ability yet?!"

A light blue aura begins to glow around Elliot's hands and spreads his feet apart and takes a deep breath, focusing on his target.

Elliot: "I can feel it. I just need to focus and…"

As the faceless gets closer, two small balls of energy escape Elliot's hands, leaving a tail of energy behind. Both blasts fire right past the faceless.

The faceless comes in closer, about four feet away, and cocks back a large muscular fist. Elliot's focus turns to shock and fear.

Elliot: I missed?!

PAGE 12

The faceless swings its over-sized fist at Elliot.

Elliot: Oh no!

A sense of excitement and relief overcomes Elliot as Devlon kicks the faceless away without a moment to spare!

Elliot: "Devlon?"

Devlon stands in front of Elliot, gripping the sword handle behind his shoulder. Elliot looks happy to see him.

Elliot: "Ayyyy! Just in time! He was about to mash my head in like a bowl of potatoes."

Devlon: "Glad I got here in time. Looks like we gotta deal with another one."

Elliot: "Another? You saw one, too?"

Stone raises a brow in curiosity.

Stone: Devlon? Isn't he…

Wendy: (off screen) "Yeah, we ran into one earlier."

Wendy joins in with a fire extinguisher resting against her leg. The police car is parked at a greater distance, about 40 feet away.

The faceless recovers from the kick, seemingly more agitated.

Wendy: "It's getting back up."

Elliot: "I think if we're careful, we can jump this fool."

Wendy: "Yeah, but this thing won't go down easily."

Devlon: "Right. Think of a plan, Wendy. If you don't mind, I wanna be the one to incapacitate it."

PAGE 13

Devlon pulls out his sword handle and confidently walks toward the faceless, who's now up on its feet. A blade of energy slowly extends out of the handle.

Devlon: "Oh, and Wendy; I know you're capable. Let me make up for my mistake in the training session and show you what I'm capable of."

Wendy: "Sure thing."

Close up on Devlon's feet as he takes off.

Devlon: I'll never fail at protecting a comrade again!

Display of a split panel: On one end, the faceless dashes at Devlon. On the other end, Devlon dashes at the faceless. The word "VS" lies in between them as they close the distance.

Devlon: "I'll make this quick!"

PAGE 14

The faceless throws a fierce punch at Devlon, but Devlon spins to the side to dodge. As he spins, he slashes the faceless's leg, causing the creature to lose its balance.

The faceless reconnects with its leg like glue.

Devlon: "So it's the same as the other one we fought."

Devlon turns his head just slightly towards Wendy and gang gang behind.

Devlon: I'm sure Wendy's taken note.

Devlon reverts his attention to the faceless and charges. The rejuvenated faceless grows more in size, throwing a straight punch at Devlon.

Just inches away from landing a punch, the creature's growth in size is evident to Devlon, seeing how its fist is more than triple the size of Devlon's head.

PAGE 15

Devlon quickly dodges and uppercuts the faceless, sending it into the air. Elliot's seen in the background, amazed.

Elliot: "He's so fast!"

Devlon jumps up to meet the faceless in the air.

Devlon: "Take this!"

After a few slashes in the air, Devlon makes his way back to the ground, landing on his feet. Diced chunks of the faceless fall behind him.

PAGE 16

Shift to Stone's perspective. He's quite impressed by what he's observed in Devlon's ability.

Stone: Yeah, he's definitely one to keep an eye on. The boss is gonna wanna meet this guy, for sure.

Next to Stone, Elliot watches on in awe.

Elliot: "So this is what a C+ rank can do."

Elliot feels a jolt.

Elliot: "Hm?!"

He looks at both of his hands. They're glowing.

Elliot: "This feeling…it's familiar. It's still active."

Devlon: "Wendy, now's the time while it's recovering. Bring over the ice shooter!"

Elliot still seems distracted by his hands. Meanwhile, Wendy runs towards Devlon with the fire extinguisher.

Wendy: "It's called a fire extinguisher!" Fight the urge to shoot him with it, Wendy.

Elliot makes a fist with his glowing hands, looking back up towards Devlon with determination.

Elliot: I can do it this time. I KNOW I can!

PAGE 17

Shifting back to Devlon's perspective, the chunks of the faceless slowly begin to meld together.

Wendy arrives with the fire extinguisher. Devlon holds out a hand, signaling for her to give it to him.

As the faceless completes its regeneration, Wendy aims the fire extinguisher with a smirk on her face.

Wendy: "No way. We're not going through that again." Fire extinguishers are not your specialty.

Wendy shoots the faceless up with the extinguisher, emptying the entire canister.

Wendy: "Eat this!"

Partially frozen, the now stiff faceless struggles to move. Devlon prepares to attack.

Devlon: "Alright, time to smash it to pieces."

Off screen voice: "WAIT!"

PAGE 18

Wendy and Devlon turn around to see Elliot running towards them.

Devlon: "Wait?"

Wendy: "For what?"

Elliot: " Guys, I think I got it this time! My ability, it's…"

Devlon: "Now of all times? We can test it out during training when we get back! But it's too dangerous right now! "

Elliot: "No, really! This time is different!"

Crackling sounds can be heard as the faceless struggles to move.

Wendy: "Well, whatever you guys do, you have to do it now!"

Devlon: "Fine! But if you don't hurry, I'll have to finish it!" It's starting to move again.

Shift to Elliot's perspective. He stops running just for a moment and looks at his hands. Determined, yet nervous.

Elliot: Only got one shot, huh? I can do this.

Elliot closes his eyes and takes a deep breath.

Elliot: I don't know how, but I can feel it. Don't let go of this feeling.

Elliot opens his eyes with full confidence.

Elliot: "I got this."

PAGE 19

Elliot dashes toward Devlon, Wendy and the faceless, arms spread out as if he's trying to balance the energy in his hands.

Meanwhile, some distance away, the back door of Wendy's police car opens. It's Kei. He had been sitting in the police car.

Little girl: "The nice lady told us to stay in the car."

Kei: "I know, sis. I just want to see what that noise was. Stay in your seat, okay?"

Kei steps out of the car to see Elliot in the distance running towards the faceless.

Kei: "Elliot?"

Shifting back to the faceless battle, Devlon readies his blade.

Devlon: "He's starting to move again. I've gotta end this before it's too late."

Elliot: "WATCH OUT!"

Still running, Elliot makes his way to Devlon and Wendy, trying to run in between them to get to the faceless.

Narrator: The world was about to meet its newest hero.

Devlon moves out of the way as Elliot brushes past with visible energy in each hand, bringing both hands to the front.

Elliot: "Have my back if this doesn't work!"

Narrator: And his name...

PAGE 20

Putting both hands together in front of him, Elliot combines the energy in both hands. He feels a release of pressure from his hands as he launches a powerful projectile of energy, blowing the faceless creature away at a great distance.

Narrator: …is Elliot.

The following image is a panel split into fourths. All close up shots. Light from the blast can be seen on his glasses.

The first is Wendy. She looks impressed, arms crossed.

Wendy: Overkill, much?

Next is Devlon with a proud smirk on his face.

Devlon: It's about time.

3rd is Kei, who looks shocked, mouth wide open.

Kei: That's…Elliot? Wait, Elliot's an...irregular?

Last is a close up of Stone, who looks like he just found what he was looking for.

Stone: Well well. Very interesting.
