Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: Rising Tensions

PAGE 1

Elliot stands with his arms in front of him, having just blasted the faceless creature. A trail of smoke and dirt follows the faceless in the distance.

Devlon places a hand on Elliot's shoulder.

Devlon: "You did it. You finally pulled it off." In a real life situation, too.

Elliot: "Hehehe, I did, didn't I? My hands are a little tingly."

Wendy: "Um, this is fine and dandy, but we have a problem." Can't help but feel proud, though.

Elliot: "What problem?"

Wendy: "Um, how about the fact that we've been battling this thing out in PUBLIC!"

Elliot looks around.

Elliot: "I mean, it looks like nobody even noticed."

Wendy: "That's what's so concerning! We just ran into two of those murderous faceless things in this neighborhood. What if the residents have already been…ya know."

Devlon: "Wouldn't this place be closed off if people were being…murdered?" This is kinda odd, though.

Wendy: "What if it happened shortly before we arrived?"

Stone steps closer to the gang.

Stone: "That won't be a problem. Most of the people in this neighborhood have been moved to a temporary location."

Wendy: I've been off the clock for some days, so I guess I wouldn't have known. "Why's that?"

PAGE 2

Stone: "Frequent reports of Irregular activity. We don't exactly have a good reputation in the media, everyone was evacuated for their safety."

Elliot: "Unsafe? Once they see me saving people, that'll change their minds real quick."

Stone: "You think you're the first one to speak like that, kid?"

Stone walks over towards the dead faceless at a distance.

Stone: "Irregulars wanna be heroes. But then there are military bots keeping an eye out. And the media makes us out to be bad guys."

Wendy's eyes follow Stone.

Stone: "Then there are cops that wanna take us in on sight. And now these…things. They seem to only attack irregulars, but I'm not sure why."

Stone stops walking once he makes it to the faceless creature's heavily damaged corpse. The ground beneath them begins to swirl. Stone glares at Elliot.

Stone: "So, I suggest you all ditch the humans before they turn on you. I'll head out for now, kid. We'll be in touch."

Wendy: "Wait! I need you to come with us. I have some questions I'd li-"

Stone notices Wendy's car in the distance. Two stone walls rise from the ground, one on each side of him.

Stone: Guess I didn't notice her cop car with all the action going on. "Sorry, I don't associate with cops."

PAGE 3

Stone: "Kid, I suggest you do the same n quit playin' around with these law enforcers. We can talk next time you're in town. Until then."

The two walls quickly slide towards each other, smashing into Stone and the dead faceless with him. As the walls shatter, Stone is nowhere to be found, as if he performed a disappearance trick.

Wendy: "Wait!"

Wendy moves around the rocks left behind where Stone was. Nothing.

Wendy: "He got away."

Elliot: "Guess he really doesn't like cops, huh?"

Devlon: "I wonder where he went?"

Wendy lets out a sigh and points behind Elliot.

Wendy: "Oh well. For now, we may have some explaining to do."

Elliot: "Huh? Oh!" I forgot.

Elliot turns around and notices Kei and his sister. They'd made their way to Elliot. Kei looks at Elliot with great concern. He looks as if he doesn't know what to say.

Kei: "El. It's still hard to wrap my head around this. You're…an irregular?"

PAGE 4

Elliot rubs the back of his head, giving off a nervous smile.

Elliot: "Ummm. Yeah. I found out last week. It's been crazy."

Wendy: "Hey, we've gotta get back and report this to Master Forte. You guys can catch up in the car."

Kei: "Wait, we're not going back home?"

Wendy: "It'll be safer for you to stick with us for now." I'm worried about those creatures.

The gang hits the road, with Wendy driving. Devlon's in the passenger's side, banned from driving. Elliot's in the back with Kei and his sister.

Wendy: "So…if everyone evacuated, why'd you choose to stay home?"

Kei: "Oh. Our guardians are pretty old. They didn't want to be away from home."

Wendy: "I see. Where are they now?"

Kei: "At an appointment. The news about irregulars possibly increasing in our area doesn't bother them."

Wendy: "Really?"

Kei: "Yeah. They're not afraid of irregulars. They refer to them as special people."

Wendy: "Now that I think about it. Elliot, have you even reached out to your folks? I bet they're worried sick."

Elliot looks out the window, but he seems nervous.

Elliot: "Huh? Oh…uh, yeah."

Devlon: "Yeah. You should have stopped by your home first. Oh well. We can stop by real quick before heading back."

Close up on Elliot. He's looking down and to the side, somewhat sad.

Elliot: "Better late than never, right?" Home. Right…

PAGE 5

They've arrived at Elliot's house. A two story house with a large porch at the top of a set of stairs, similar to Kei's house.

Elliot walks up the stairs to the front door while Wendy and Devlon wait outside, leaning on the car.

Elliot: "I'll be right back."

Wendy: "He doesn't seem too thrilled to be home." Is that why he didn't come here first?

Focus is now only on Elliot's perspective. He unenthusiastically walks in the front door with his head down.

Elliot: "Momma Betty, I'm home-"

As the door shuts behind him, Elliot's face is forced to the side as a strong hand slaps him across the face.

Momma Betty: "Where the hell have you been?!"

Elliot catches himself on the wall nearby. He has a mark on his cheek. He's clearly angered, but tries to hide it.

Momma Betty: "I had no idea where you were! You've been gone for days! And I couldn't evacuate without you!"

She lights a cigarette while continuing to admonish Elliot.

Momma Betty: "I let you stay out as late as you want, and this is how you repay me?"

PAGE 6

She blows smoke near Elliot's face.

Betty: "I had to stay behind cuz we couldn't let the authorities find out you were gone!"

Elliot looks down and to the side, avoiding eye contact.

Elliot: "There was a lot going on. I'm sorry."

Betty: "You got that right. I took your sorry self in cuz nobody else wanted a sorry kid like you!"

Still looking down, Elliot becomes furious. Though he still doesn't say anything. He balls his fists.

Betty: "What, balling your fists at me now? Behavior like this is what'll get you swapped out! Is that what you want?"

Elliot lets out a large, shaky sigh, though it didn't settle his ever rising adrenaline.

Elliot: "No ma'am. You're right. May I just go to my room?"

Betty: "I was gonna send you there anyway. You better not make a lot of noise."

PAGE 7

In his bedroom, Elliot leans against the door, pushing it shut. He walks over towards the bed, biting his lip.

Fists still balled, he began to swing at the air, his body lunging in the direction of his punches.

Elliot: I'm tired. I'm so tired of this!

His eyes begin to water when he makes his way to the bed, violently shoving some things in his packing bag.

Elliot: I can't wait to get outta here! Stupid lady. Like I care about evacuating!

Elliot throws the bag against the wall and collapses to the floor, punching it. Tears begin to fall from his face.

Elliot: "I'm not sorry, either!" I have friends. Kei, Devlon, Wendy, Nana. I AM wanted! I…

Elliot sobs, tears falling on the floor.

Elliot: "I AM wanted!"

Elliot rises to his feet, full of fury. He punches the door.

Elliot: Screw this house! Screw this door!

PAGE 8

He punches down on the bed. Consumed with anger and hurt, he doesn't even realize he broke the bed frame beneath.

Elliot: Screw this bed!

He also doesn't realize his hands are glowing as he walks over to the wall, cocking back a fist.

Elliot: "Screw this wall, too!" I'm tired of this!

Scene changes to Devlon's and Wendy's perspective. They're still chilling on the side of the car.

Devlon: "I wonder what's taking Elliot so long."

Wendy: "Knowing him, he's probably getting all his comics and video games."

*BOOM!

The sound of an explosion startles Devlon and Wendy.

Devlon: "What was that?!"

Wendy: "It came from Elliot's house!" Is it another faceless thing?

Shifting back to Elliot's perspective, he stands in his room with his hand stretched forward, having just punched the wall. In all that rage and adrenaline, he had accidentally blown out the entire wall on the side of the house. Now he just stands there with a big "oops" face.

PAGE 9

On the other side of Elliot's bedroom door, Momma Betty screams.

Betty: "What was that noise!"

In a panic, Elliot grabs his two bags and Elliot jumps down from the new door he created and signals his friends to start the car as he walks to them, but not without turning and giving the house one last nasty look of disgust.

Wendy: "What happened?"

Devlon: "Is there an enemy?"

Elliot walks past Wendy without making eye contact.

Wendy: "You okay?"

Elliot: "Let's just go."

They're back on the road. Elliot sits in the back seat with Kei and Nana.

Kei: "So you were there during that incident at Maple Mall?"

Elliot plays off his feelings from earlier with a smile, flexing a muscle.

Elliot: "Yeah. See these guns? Blew a hole clean through the building."

Kei: "I've been in the dark about it all this whole time. I'm glad you're back in town."

Wendy: "Well, he's gonna be out of town again after we drop you off."

Kei: "Wait, what? Can we just come with?"

PAGE 10

Wendy: "What? No, I can't just bring you along." If what that guy said is true, then those faceless things are after irregulars. It's not safe for them.

Kei: "But I can't just sit at home now that I know my best friend is an irregular living at some unknown place!"

Wendy: "But what about the little one? She's your sister, right?" She's so adorable.

Kei: "Yes! But we're all siblings. The three of us!"

Elliot: "Kei, just let it go…"

Kei looks very adamant to get his point across. Elliot is now looking out the window.

Wendy: "I thought you said you guys were friends?"

Kei: "Well, that too. But we have to stay close. Stick together!"

Wendy: "You're not making any sense." He seems so upset right now.

Kei's face transitions from frustration to sadness.

Kei: "Elliot and I were bros in the same home at one point. But he's been moved to different homes a lot lately."

Still looking out the window, Elliot hangs his head low. He doesn't say anything.

Wendy flashes back to when she and Devlon met Kei at his front door.

*FLASHBACK*

Kei: "Wait, he's not being moved to another home, is he?"

*END OF FLASHBACK*

With sadness in her eyes, Wendy looks at the rearview mirror to cop a look at Elliot.

Wendy: I had a feeling that's what he meant back then. So Elliot is…

PAGE 11

Front view of Elliot, who's looking out the window with his chin resting in his palm.

Wendy: …in foster care.

Elliot: "T.M.I, bro. Hey Wendy, pull over real quick? I need to stretch a bit."

Wendy pulls over on the side of the road. Elliot steps away with his hands in his pocket while the others remain in the car.

Devlon: "You guys grew up together in the same home?" No wonder you wanna stick together.

Kei: "Yeah, but we got separated when we moved to different homes."

Nana: "Elliot's our friend. He always brings me gifts and stuff. He's really nice."

Kei looks out the window where Elliot is.

Kei: "Right." He's more than that, sis. You were just too little to remember.

Elliot finds his way back to the car.

Wendy: Man…this is too heavy.

Close up on Wendy as she looks down at the steering wheel.

Wendy: I…I'm only 18. I don't know what to do right now. I don't have the OK to bring them with me, but…

PAGE 12

Elliot slides back in the car. He looks a little better now.

Elliot: "Sorry bout that. We can go now. Oh but first, Wendy you dropped this."

Close up on Elliot's hand. He's holding the remote that Forte told Wendy to use in case of emergency when she got her new car.

Elliot: "Looks kind of important."

Wendy: "Devlon, can you grab that? Kinda driving right now."

Devlon: "Sure."

Devlon grabs the device, but his thumb jams into the button when he grabs it.

Sfx: Beep! Beep! Beep!

Devlon: "Oops."

Wendy: "What was that?"

Devlon: "Um…nothing, I hope."

Robotic voice: "GPS set to Site 7! Turbo initiated! Auto Pilot ON! Fasten your seatbelts!"

Everyone looks at each other then around the car.

Devlon: "Where's that voice coming from?"

Wendy: "I don't know. Devlon, what did you do?!"

Suddenly, the car accelerates beyond its normal capabilities. Flames escape the exhaust pipes, leaving behind a trail of smoke as the car reaches top speed.

Everyone: "KYAAAA!"

PAGE 13

Devlon curiously points at Wendy with question marks above his head.

Devlon: "Hey Wendy, what's that?"

Hands still on the wheel, Wendy rolls her eyes up to see that above her head are five stars lined up. The first star is golden and blinks on and off while the other four stars are greyed out.

Wendy: "NOW LOOK WHAT YOU DID! I HAVE A STAR!"

Devlon: "Aren't stars a good thing?"

Suddenly, sirens are heard behind them. A police car is speeding behind them.

Wendy: "THERE ARE COPS AFTER US!"

Devlon: "But you're a cop! Doesn't that count for something?"

The high speed chase continues as they're led down a long road.

Wendy: "Only when I use my siren to run a red light! But That's only when my bladder is full!"

Elliot: "Well, it won't matter. They're eating our DUST!"

Wendy panics, snatching the remote from Devlon and starts spamming every button on the remote.

Wendy: "Pleeeease make this thing stop!"

Bird's view of the car, stopping in the middle of the road, spitting out smoke as it stops in the middle of nowhere.

Wendy gets out of the car, fanning the smoke from her face.

Wendy: *cough cough*

PAGE 14

She bends forward, hands on her knees, as she tries to catch her breath.

Wendy: Those two are gonna be the death of me!

Voice: "Well well. I finally caught up to ya, and look who I found."

Close shot of Wendy. She looks unpleasantly surprised.

Wendy: Oh no. Of all people… "It's you."

Small panel displaying a leg step forward.

Voice: "Heaven must be on my side to finally catch you screwin' up."

Devlon and Elliot step out of the car. Wendy looks irritated.

Devlon: "Who's that?"

Elliot: "You know this guy, Wendy?"

Wendy: "Yeah."

PAGE 15

Full page panel. Front view of a guy standing with a smug smirk on his face. He's wearing a cowboy hat and wears a big badge.

Wendy: "It's my old boss."
