Mia shifted uneasily as she looked at Austin. For unknown reasons, her heart was pounding due to anxiety. She hadn't written any background about vampires and dragons being enemies, and yet Austin's disdain was apparent on his face and in his tone. There had to be something deeper at play, something that she never envisioned would come alive like this.
"Austin, what did the dragons do to make you hate them so much?" she asked cautiously.
Austin's face hardened, and she noticed the frown in his face as his gaze grew distant, as if dredging up a memory he would rather forget. "It's a long, sordid history," he muttered, as if that was reason enough to brush it aside. But when Mia didn't let her gaze falter, "I want to know." She demanded, causing the other vampires around them to smirk. Nobody spoke with authority to him like that except his father, yet when he was around Selena, they noticed how he could easily agree to things.
