Chapter 8 - Free Will and Responsibility

Lucifer's POV

"Would you look at that," I say, stretching out my arms, feeling my new body settle into place. "I must admit, Jack knows how to craft a dashing figure. Not that I'm complaining, of course." I flash a devilish grin, admiring my reflection in the glassy expanse of the dimension. Handsome, if I do say so myself.

I turn to my brother—well, not technically my brother, but who's counting? Amendeial stands beside me, stoic as ever, trying to make sense of this new world like it's a bloody puzzle to solve. "You've got that look, brother. The 'I'm responsible for all of this' face. Really, you ought to relax."

Amendeial furrows his brow, crossing his arms. "Lucifer, we've been given a purpose here. Jack created this place, and it's our responsibility to make sure it runs smoothly."

"Our responsibility? Oh, darling, you're mistaken if you think I'm signing up for that job," I say with a wink. "I'm here to enjoy myself. Explore, create chaos, see what this world has to offer."

"You can't just abandon responsibility, Lucifer. We were created for a reason. This isn't a vacation," Amendeial insists, his voice calm but with that familiar undertone of exasperation. I've always had that effect on him. It's part of my charm.

I chuckle, shaking my head. "Always so serious, aren't you? Don't you get it? We've been given something far more precious than mere duty. We've been given free will." I spread my arms wide, emphasizing the grandness of it all. "Jack said it himself—we're free to do whatever we like! That, my dear brother, is a gift worth cherishing."

Amendeial doesn't seem convinced. "Just because we have freedom doesn't mean we should abandon our purpose."

I roll my eyes. "Purpose, shmurpose. What's the point of all this if we don't have a little fun along the way? Look at us! We're cosmic beings, capable of anything! And yet, here you are, already trying to burden yourself with responsibility." I sigh dramatically, placing a hand on my heart. "It pains me, truly."

"I'm not trying to burden myself, Lucifer," Amendeial responds, voice steady. "I just believe that, as the firstborn—"

"Firstborn?" I laugh, cutting him off. "Oh, come now. This isn't some kind of family hierarchy. We were created, sure, but that doesn't mean you have to act like some overprotective parent. We're equals, mate. And besides, Jack's the real boss around here, not you."

He sighs, clearly not amused. "Lucifer, we have a responsibility to—"

"Responsibility," I mock, repeating the word in a posh accent just to wind him up. "You keep saying that as if it's a prison sentence. You've got to loosen up, brother. It's not all doom and gloom."

Amendeial stays quiet for a moment, his gaze distant as he looks across the vast, empty dimension. "It's just... I feel like I need to set an example. Jack's entrusted us with freedom, yes, but that doesn't mean we should act recklessly. There's a balance to be struck."

I roll my eyes, but this time, there's a softer edge to it. "Oh, Amendeial, you and your balance." I take a step closer, putting a hand on his shoulder. "Look, I get it. You want to be the responsible one, make sure everything's in order. But here's the thing—you don't need to worry so much. Jack doesn't want us to run this place. Not yet, anyway."

Amendeial looks at me, confused. "What do you mean?"

I shrug. "He said it himself. We're free. For now, this dimension is ours to do with as we please. When the time comes, sure, maybe we'll have to play the role of cosmic caretakers or whatever. But for now? We've got the chance to figure things out our own way."

Amendeial frowns. "And you think we should just... what? Do nothing?"

I smirk. "Not nothing, brother. I'm saying we should explore, experiment, see what we're capable of. There's a whole dimension out there just waiting for us. Don't you want to know what you can do?"

Amendeial hesitates. "I suppose... there is some merit to that."

"Exactly," I say, flashing him a winning smile. "Besides, when has acting responsibly ever been fun?"

He sighs, clearly not convinced but also not entirely dismissing my point. Progress.

Amendeial's POV

Lucifer, as always, speaks with a certain charm. I can't deny that there's a truth in his words—freedom is a gift, and it's not one to be taken lightly. But still, there's a weight on my shoulders, a sense of responsibility that I can't shake.

"I understand what you're saying, Lucifer," I admit, though it feels strange to agree with him. "But I can't help feeling that we need to be prepared. Jack might not expect us to run things now, but what about in the future?"

Lucifer waves a dismissive hand. "The future can wait. Right now, the present is where the fun is." He gives me that devilish grin again, the one that always makes it seem like he's five steps ahead of everyone else.

I turn away, gazing out at the vast expanse of the dimension. It's so empty, so full of potential. "I'm not saying we should ignore the present. I just think... maybe we should be thinking ahead, even if we're free to do as we please."

Lucifer comes up beside me, clapping a hand on my back. "Amendeial, brother, you're thinking too much. We've got time. For now, let's just enjoy the ride. And when the time comes to be responsible cosmic beings? Well, I'll leave that to you."

I can't help but chuckle at that. "You're impossible, you know that?"

"Ah, but you love me for it," he replies with a wink.

Despite my reservations, I feel a sense of calm settling over me. Maybe he's right—maybe we don't need to rush into anything. Perhaps there's wisdom in allowing ourselves time to grow, to understand our powers before we take on the responsibilities Jack may one day ask of us.

Still, I can't help but feel the weight of that future. Whether Lucifer acknowledges it or not, we are the first beings in this place. We'll be the ones to shape it, to guide it when the time comes. And that... that is a heavy burden.

But for now, I suppose Lucifer's right. We have the freedom to explore, to learn, to understand what we've been given. And maybe, just maybe, that's enough for now.
