Nevian's POV
Reclining on my swivel chair, I had a smirk dancing on my lips as I swirled around with my eyes closed.
It was one year now since I evaded getting married and so, I was yet to lay claim to my inheritance.
"Khloe Marshall." I called, the smile on my lips getting more broad.
When I first met with her, I was immediately drawn to her. She was the first woman I was seeing in that light and she proved it to me within a day of our meeting.
Considering her vulnerable state, my first approach was to coerce her into being my contracted wife but I discarded the plan after she lay down her plan of running a business.
Although I haven't met with all the women in the world, I was convinced that her type was rare because of the few women I had come across.
As she spoke, her desire was glinting in her eyes, her tone carried every single emotion that refusing to help her felt like committing a crime.
And then I accepted.
Though I was skeptical about the outcome of the business since she hadn't been in charge of a business before or even attended a business school, I gave out the loan she had requested for.
Over the months, she had proved to me that I didn't make a wrong choice and for that single reason, I always donated to her business on a monthly basis.
Still smiling, I snapped my eyes open only to see Alfred, my personal assistant standing across the table with a file in his hand.
Sitting up immediately, I gawked at him.
"Stop acting like a ghost." I said through my teeth, embarrassed that he had walked in on me while I was daydreaming.
"Are you embarrassed? Come on, you don't have to be." He chuckled, placing the file on the table.
Ignoring him, I went ahead to read through it and then proceeded to put down my signature.
He was already at the door when he turned around suddenly and with his eyes locked with mine he made his way towards my table.
Preparing myself for a lecture from him, I dug my fingers into my palm.
Alfred was older than I was and so I always gave him the respect he deserved and on his part, he didn't take it for granted.
He was always up and doing, making sure everything ran smoothly.
Ever since I ventured into business, he had been my secretary and never for once had I thought of the need to get him replaced.
"About your crush, you should meet with her instead of stalking and daydreaming when you are less busy." He said, the smile on his face not fading off even for a second.
"I'm not crushing on her." I said in my defense, rolling my eyes at him. It was embarrassing each time he brought this up.
"If you are not crushing on her then it's crystal clear that you are in love with her." He shrugged. "Who knows if she feels the same way towards you?" He added as I fell back on my seat.
"She doesn't love me, she hates me from the first day we crossed paths." I muttered, rubbing the scar that her teeth had given me.
"That was a year ago, I believe her perception about you has changed." He said and after a while took his leave.
It wasn't long after this that my phone began to buzz and immediately, I pulled it out of my pocket.
"Father!" I huffed, pushing my phone back into my pockets only to pull it out after a while.
"If you hadn't picked up, I will be on my way to come see you." Father said the moment the lines connected, making me roll my eyes.
"I'm busy, you know."
"No you are not! I just got off the phone with Alfred and he says you are free to talk with me." He replied, causing me to chuckle as it sounded funny to me.
"So… what is it that you want to talk about?" I asked after a brief silence.
"There is a family dinner tomorrow, you need to come with your wife."
"Wife!" I exclaimed, my heart ramming against my chest.
"I need to retire son…"
"But… I'm not married yet, I'm not seeing anyone even." I ratted out. I was about to continue when he hushed me on the other end.
"Why are you keeping my daughter in-law from me? You promised to bring her to me whenever I want to see her…"
Dammit!
To avoid getting married to Millie Bobbi, I had sent one of Khloe's pictures which I had gotten from her IG page to him and ever since then, he always referred to her as his daughter in law.
"Oh! About that…" I chuckled lightly, blaming myself for forgetting something like this.
If father gets to know I was just pulling his legs, not only was he going to be mad at me, he wouldn't hesitate to give me to Millie since she was still unmarried.
"She is a busy woman and dinner time is when she usually rests after a hard day." I spilled, hoping he bought it.
"I understand, son, but please, bring her to me by all means tomorrow. I'm getting old and I can't continue to oversee the business without making a mistake, you need to take over."
"I'm married already so you don't need to think twice before handing over to me." I said with a little chuckle, digging my hand into my hair.
"I will only believe your tale until I see my daughter in-law." He hung up immediately, causing me to push my chair backwards in anger.
"Where am I going to start from?" I groaned, clenching and unclenching my fists.
We haven't seen each other in a year, I can't just walk up to her demanding she follow me for dinner and act like my wife.
"I should have just come clean back them." I muttered, tugging my hair.
Still in this disheveled state, the door creaked open and Khloe Marshall walked in.
