Chapter 15 - Harm’s way

Deftly deflecting a sharp and bone crushing mace, Kodesh found himself backing away from the vicious and relentless attacks on the rough and uneven terrain of the chain of hills.

The short and stocky warrior wielding a war hammer, the scrawny woman wielding a needle-like sword and a few more leathered warriors had joined in the assault too, fighting cohesively against their lone and inexperienced sworn enemy.

The young noble knight was also among the horde, cunningly hiding behind the reckless lowborns as the heated battle was raging on at the high grounds of the usually peaceful and serene hills.

The burnished silver armored knight had an opulent and lavish life awaiting him in the city, a fortune of riches and wealth that was awaiting his return. More importantly, a beautiful noble suitor, who was patiently waiting for him to come home and live happily ever after.

Good things come to those who wait right? Well not on Kodesh's watch. The blue-blooded aristocrat was going to die today and the betrothed girl's worst fears were soon going to come true. It was either Kodesh or the highborn knight so it was a no brainer.

Switching to some kind of a hanging stance technique, Kodesh's posture changed to a parry posture. A hint of grim and disdain glinted in his sunny eyes and in the next second, he blasted towards the horde.

Parrying a thrusting stroke from one of the leather armored warrior, Kodesh instinctively switched to an attack posture in a just a fraction second, delivering a thrust attack of his own on the sluggish man. The white hilted sharp dagger punctured a gaping hole in his chest like the leather hide was made of wool, killing him instantly.

In the next moment, Kodesh was in the receiving end of a series of a devastating onslaught.

Dismissing the blade to the block prints, Kodesh's eyes scanned the battlefield for a split second, death surrounding him on all sides, closing in rapidly like a violent implosion.

Sensing danger, his figure suddenly disappeared into nothingness, vanished into obscurity and not even leaving an afterimage behind.

A fraction of a second later, he appeared on the flat grounds, right next to the six fingered and toed giant whose colossal corpse was unceremoniously sprawled near the tomb of Samson.

Way above him, the rock he was standing on just a fraction of a second ago was pounded by a heavy war hammer and a sharp spiked mace, sending a slight tremor through the hills and crushing the hard rock into grains finer than the grains of soil.

He instantly quaked in his boots as he was thinking about how he could've been turned to mince if he didn't teleport to safety.

Forcing the dark pessimism out of his mind he shifted his attention to the men descending down the hill.

He had ten enemies left to kill but he was already breathing heavily. At this rate he wasn't going to send the highborn knight and his horde of lowborns to an early tomb.

He relied heavily on his teleportation aspect because he is not a trained fighter but it had drained his energy substantially.

Without giving him time to replenish his strength, the ten warriors and six mirror spawns regrouped by the base of the hill and stood side by side, all drooling with blood lust, their aura, threatening and ominous.

A lone figure of a young handsome boy with short copper hair and golden yellow eyes was standing boldly and defiantly on the other side.

He might have been standing alone but he had more resolve than all of them combined. The highborn knight's resolve couldn't compare.

Kodesh wasn't fighting to marry a girl of his dreams, he was fighting for the very survival of his family and kingdom, and that weighed more than a fancy white wedding.

Glancing at the massive boulder, Kodesh's eyes burnt with deep determination and doggedness. He wanted to impart himself with the strength of the legendary warrior resting beyond the massive boulder and attempt to save his family so he wasn't going to let himself lose to a bunch of cursed Oaklanders.

As soon as the white glass formed in his hand, he lunged to meet the charging horde of warriors in a frenzy of rage and in the next second they clashed as cacophonous swooshing sounds and loud groaning reverberated in the hills.

Opting to rampage their defenses through their weakest links, the leather armored men, Kodesh managed to defy their ranks, crushing one skull to paste with the help of his weighty right hand and opening a gushing hole in one of the leather armored warrior's throat with the white glass. His blood spraying the dry ground red.

The reckless move had paid off, he managed to kill two but in the next moment, he found himself at the mercy of the fierce warriors.

Dodging a bone crushing mace and a clobbering war hammer, Kodesh side stepped the two but only to find himself in the deadly path of a slender needle-like sword, thrusting towards him at devastating speed.

He was a second too late and had no luxury to block or deflect the attack.

A deformed smile of missing teeth escaped the scrawny woman's mouth as she was anticipating to skewer Kodesh's guts. In the next moment the blade punctured his skin and as blood poured out, the needle crumbled into shards.

Out of desperation, Kodesh used his heavy hand to block the slender sword and just as he had anticipated, the sword shattered to pieces at the very moment it came into contact with his weighty right hand. It only managed to pierce his skin only.

The woman never got the chance to be stunned by how strong Kodesh's right hand was, because in the next moment, the white glass was in the air, swooshing towards her breastplate.

Her thin weight immediately buckled to the ground as the white hilted blade plunged deep into her breastplate, right where it joins with her left shoulder guards.

In the next split second as Kodesh's sunny eyes lingered towards his real target, the burnished silver armored knight was already closing in, his spawns side by side with him.

Kodesh focused his sentience on their auras but the more he did the more he couldn't tell them apart. The highborn knight wasn't using his invisibility aspect so there was just no way for Kodesh to glean more on him. If he had used the invisibility aspect, Kodesh could have easily sensed his aura just like before. It must have been limited or maybe he didn't want to use it again.

In any case, Kodesh found himself surrounded by vengeful warriors filled to capacity with paroxysm of rage. Their aura polluting the fresh air with a sudden outburst of intense rage and fury for the woman he had just slain in cold blood.

Without a fraction of a second to spare, a sumptuous golden hilted sword, a humongous war hammer and a sharp stiletto mace collided in the air, sending sparks and shockwaves across the hills as Kodesh disappeared into nothingness.

He somehow managed to create some distance from the onslaught of the vengeful armored warriors. But he didn't get to glean more about the noble knight's powers. So he had to re-do the whole deadly and double edged attack again.

But now their girlfriend was dead so the battle was as personal as it could possibly get. As their noses flared and their brows furrowed, Kodesh reappeared into the physical realm.

His lungs were expanding convulsively, desperately pumping air into his sorry body. The weighty hand was even more heavier than ever, dragging his weight to the ground like an otherworldly gravitational pull.

A normal person would have taken a few seconds to catch a breath of respite but Kodesh immediately lunged back at them with tenacity, determination and grim persistence glinting in his sunny eyes. The golden yellow eyes seemed to be even more pronounced and radiant in the morning sun.

He had the very same look that was hinting in the feline eyes of the injured leopard that nearly killed him.

He was just as desperate as the spotted beast because time was running out. He had to kill them and traverse to the city of Oakland before his family is sacrificed to their perverse god.

Narrowly avoiding the massive war hammer, Kodesh brandished the white glass to strike his exposed head but the heavily spiked mace user was already upon him. He was sharp minded and intuitive so he was starting to understand the way Kodesh fought, even successfully predicting him.

Instantly switching from an attack posture to a defensive stance, Kodesh hefted his head as sharp spikes missed his copper haired head by a hair's breadth.

In that chaos, the blue-blooded aristocrat found an opening and went for the kill. He had waited an eternity for that moment.

Coincidentally, Kodesh had also been waiting for the very same opportunity.

Focusing his sentience on the highborn knight and his spawns, Kodesh tried to glean the real one once again. He had less than a second to do so before he was slashed by the golden hilted sword.

The same blade had left him bleeding the last time so he can vouch for its sharp blade all too well.

Straining his senses to their limits, he tried to discern just the slightest of differences between their auras but even with his enhanced and sharp sentience, he still couldn't tell apart the real one from the half dozen spawns. They were mirror images of him.

Kodesh thought of teleporting to safety once more, but decided to wait just a bit longer. The war hammer and the shining mace were already in the air, the golden hilted sword wielded by the highborn knight and his spawns were also uncomfortably on his personal space.

In that moment between life and death, Kodesh focused on the spawns and their noble master like there was no series of onslaughts descending on him at harrowing speed. And right in that moment he picked something, the slightest difference in the seven auras. One of them resembled the source of the other six auras. Like it was the sun while the six spawns where like six moons reflecting the sun's light.

'Gotcha.'

With that he imagined being teleportated to safety. That how the aspect worked. It manifested his thoughts into reality. But this time it seemed the aspect couldn't heed his instructions. He had reached his teleportation limit sooner than he expected and found himself right in harm's way with no escape route.
