Chereads / Villain's Gambit: Protagonist Bows / Chapter 16 - Chapter 16

Chapter 16 - Chapter 16

"Come on, if you don't come, you're not a man."

Noticing that Chu Ge was hesitating to respond, Liu Yanru felt a surge of confidence. With her head held high, her face blooming like a peach blossom, and a hint of mischief gleaming in her large, expressive eyes, she thought to herself:

You're teasing me, huh? Let's see if I can teach you a lesson.

In just two days at the Moyu Group, Liu Yanru had managed to restore order. With the Huayue Group no longer in her way, she successfully acquired Medusa Company for a staggering one billion under the banner of Moyu Group.

As the unsung hero of this acquisition, Chu Ge naturally deserved recognition from the boss. When he saw her boldly testing his resolve, he couldn't help but take a deep breath.

Is this a test of the bodyguard? There's no way any bodyguard would endure this.

He'd be less than a man if he didn't take action. When the moment came, he sprang into action.

After Chu Ge succeeded, he noticed Liu Yanru's expression shift dramatically as she abruptly exited the office.

"This girl is no joke."

In a moment of panic, he recalled how her touch had felt just seconds earlier.

As he saw Secretary Yan Jingxian emerging from the elevator, he thought it best to leave quickly.

"Secretary Yan."

Acting casual, he greeted her as he walked by.

"Where is Bodyguard Chu going?"

Yan Jingxian, holding documents closely to her chest, adjusted her glasses and looked at him with suspicion. As the chairman's personal bodyguard, shouldn't he be by her side right now?

"I have some personal matters to attend to. Secretary Yan, are you leaving?"

Chu Ge hurriedly stepped into the elevator and quickly withdrew his head when he noticed the boss glaring outside.

"Today, people are truly lucky."

As the elevator descended, Chu Ge hummed a cheerful tune while tracking the diminishing floor numbers.

"Where did Chu Ge go?"

Liu Yanru, seeing no one outside, turned to Yan Jingxian with an icy expression.

This was typical of Liu Yanru, so Yan Jingxian didn't think much of it.

"Bodyguard Chu mentioned he had some personal matters and took the elevator."

"Come in and report the situation."

Liu Yanru's demeanor remained steady, the impression of her soft words and cold nature firmly fixed in people's minds. Reflecting on earlier events, a flush of embarrassment colored her cheeks.

In a coffee shop, Feng Linlin sat leisurely in a corner, gazing out the window while idly stirring her coffee.

At that moment, Chu Ge strolled in.

"Do you have an appointment, sir?"

The waiter, noticing Chu Ge's entrance, approached him, seemingly searching for someone.

"Yes, table number three, with a woman named Feng."

With the waiter at his side, Chu Ge spoke up. He had been hesitant to come but knew that maintaining his presence was vital to disrupting Ye Feng's plans.

As Ye Feng's rival, he sought to eliminate all support behind Ye Feng to ensure a clean break.

Feng Linlin suddenly noticed a strikingly handsome man seated across from her.

"Are you Chu Ge?"

Having never seen a photo of Chu Ge, she asked with curiosity. After all, other than Ye Feng, no other man held her attention.

"Didn't you ask me to come?"

After requesting a coffee with sugar from the waiter, he turned to Feng Linlin and continued their conversation.

On meeting her for the first time, Chu Ge was struck by how gracefully she stirred her coffee. She truly embodied the elegance that characterized the Feng family, yet it was unfortunate that she was entangled with the troublesome Ye Feng.

"What happened with Zhao Lingyun—was that you?"

Sipping her coffee lightly, Feng Linlin questioned him.

"Wasn't that Ye Feng's doing? I don't know anything."

Chu Ge feigned astonishment at her knowledge of his actions.

However, admitting culpability could backfire if she recorded his words.

"Whether you admit it or not, I'm here to warn you that Ye Feng is not someone to provoke."

"If you disregard this warning, I'll ensure you realize the consequences."

As Chu Ge remained silent, Feng Linlin's gaze grew colder.

"You're threatening me," she stated.

Chu Ge smirked in disdain, "So Ye Feng hides behind women, huh?"

"Without a woman, Ye Feng is nothing."

"You will not insult Ye Feng in that manner."

Feng Linlin's tone became serious as she replied coldly, "Ye Feng doesn't even know I'm aiding him."

"If he were aware, someone as capable as Ye Feng wouldn't accept my help."

Suddenly, recalling something, she laughed sharply and added, "How can someone like you understand that Ye Feng is much stronger at heart?"

"After all, you're living off Liu Yanru."

"What do you ultimately want to say?"

"If there's nothing else, I'll be on my way."

Chu Ge took a sip of the coffee brought by the waiter, savoring its sweetness and rich aroma that left him intrigued.

"My primary reason for coming is that I need evidence of Liu Yanru embezzling from the Ye family. I need your assistance in obtaining this."

"As Liu Yanru's personal bodyguard, you have easier access to her trust than anyone else."

"Once we complete this, I'll offer you a generous sum—enough for a comfortable life."

Seeing Chu Ge's determined nature, Feng Linlin finally revealed her purpose for meeting him.

She could have sent Uncle Wang instead but didn't want him to think she was helping Ye Feng again.

She wanted to dispel the notion that Ye Feng was a dependent, so she approached him herself.

In Feng Linlin's view, there was nothing that couldn't be resolved with money.

"Oh?" Chu Ge remarked, noticing Feng Linlin's confident demeanor.

"Don't you see how dangerous it is for you to be here alone with me?"

Suddenly leaning closer, he wore a predatory smile, his voice dropping to a dark, haunting tone.

She appeared terrified and nearly spilled her coffee, twisting away in alarm.

"Linlin?"

A familiar voice called from outside.

"Brother Ye."

The startled exclamation made Feng Linlin turn, her heart racing as she recognized the long-awaited figure standing in front of the glass.

"Sorry, we're just having coffee. Don't misunderstand—I came here by coincidence."

"I didn't expect you to still have a past connection. I'll leave first. I haven't even paid for the coffee yet, so please go ahead."

At some point, Chu Ge had stepped outside the café, edging closer to Ye Feng, murmuring as he sauntered away.

Neither Ye Feng nor Feng Linlin had a moment to respond.

What a fortunate coincidence.

Chu Ge hadn't anticipated running into Ye Feng here—let alone finding him alongside Feng Linlin, so closely involved.

Ye Feng overlooked Chu Ge's words, but a crack began to form in his relationship with Feng Linlin.

Though he hadn't explicitly defined their relationship, he considered Feng Linlin as someone special to him.

Yet moments ago, from where he stood, he witnessed Chu Ge lean in close to Feng Linlin, almost as if he was going to kiss her.

Feng Linlin appeared to laugh but quickly recoiled, embarrassed.

Coldness washed over him.

"Sorry for interrupting; it seems I've interrupted something."

Ye Feng chuckled at his misfortune, feeling self-pity creep in.

"Brother Ye, you've misunderstood," she protested.

Feng Linlin, wishing to clarify, feared that Ye Feng might think she was being meddlesome.

"Enough! I'm not interested in hearing your explanation. I'll just believe what I saw."

"Unfortunately, I have something to attend to, so I'm off."

Ye Feng's heart sank as he realized that Feng Linlin was with his enemy.

With that, he turned and left, ignoring the chase by a flustered Feng Linlin.

However, Ye Feng was too swift for her; after pursuing him for a while, he disappeared from sight.

"This is all your fault, Chu Ge."

Feng Linlin seethed, her frustration aimed squarely at him. Had he not acted just moments earlier, she might have had a romantic encounter with Ye Feng.

In her eyes, the world began to crumble; nothing was worse than being misunderstood by the one she cared for.

She sought to explain her true intentions but held back, fearing accusations of meddling.

From the shadows, Chu Ge observed, relishing the moment and walking towards her.

"Uncomfortable? Sad? Is your sweetheart ignoring your attempts to explain?"

Finding it amusing, Chu Ge felt delighted by the misunderstanding brewing between them. He thought it was best to leave things unresolved.

"Why are you still here?"

Feng Linlin turned to face him, annoyance etched on her features, finding Chu Ge looking triumphantly.

"I'm not afraid of Ye Feng's interpretation. I'm not rushing back to explain."

Rubbing his nose, Chu Ge feigned regret as he spun a web of lies effortlessly.

"Hmph, I don't need you for that," she scoffed, her voice firm.

Layers of resentment began to peel away from her perception of him; he wasn't as sinister as Uncle Wang portrayed.
