"Harry, you're just not qualified yet. You're only in high school. Come back after you graduate from college," Ye Hai replied bluntly, refusing.
Harry protested, "But Gwen is also in high school, and she became your assistant, didn't she?"
Ye Hai smiled slightly and said, "First, Gwen is very beautiful—she's my girlfriend, and working with her is a pleasure. Second, she's exceptionally talented; she's no mere pretty face. The knowledge she possesses is on par with college graduates, and under my guidance, I believe she's at least as competent as a graduate student now. And what about you, Harry? What do you have?"
Feeling belittled in front of others left Harry furious, yet helpless, which was a significant blow to him. He retorted angrily, "I will surpass Gwen! No, I will definitely surpass you!"
"Pfft! Ignorant!"
With that, Ye Hai turned and walked out of the Osborn mansion. He had no intention of showing any kindness to an ignorant, delusional young man, especially one who had ideas about his girlfriend, Gwen.
As Harry watched Ye Hai's retreating figure, his fists clenched in anger and his body trembled. Just then, a large hand rested on his shoulder. He turned to see his father, saying in shame, "Dad…"
"You are indeed very ignorant, and your direction is all wrong. No matter how talented you are in scientific research, you can't compete with Dr. Lee!" Norman bluntly criticized Harry, showing no signs of gentleness because Harry was his son.
He had always been this stern, or rather, harsh.
Harry was used to it by now and weakly asked, "So what should I do?"
"You should focus your interests on management and business; that is your future career. You need to recognize your identity and position. Your scientific research can only be a hobby."
"But I don't like business, Dad!" Harry stubbornly replied.
"You have to like business because you are my son, Norman Osborn," Norman said coldly, his tone leaving no room for debate.
…
Ye Hai returned to the Osborn Industrial Building and walked down a corridor lined with multiple screens showing a news segment. The footage depicted a fire in an apartment building, with a person in a red uniform nimbly scaling the walls to rescue one refugee after another, moving with the agility of a spider.
A crowd had gathered, many were expressing admiration and envy. One middle-aged black man exclaimed excitedly, "Spider-Man, he's amazing, isn't he?"
"Yes, he's great," someone replied casually.
"He's a good person, isn't he?" the black man continued enthusiastically, his tone imbued with earnestness, as if he sought everyone's agreement.
"Yes, he's a good person," came the indifferent responses from those around, who didn't care much about what Spider-Man was doing.
"Don't gather here! Shouldn't you all get back to work?" a middle-aged man who looked like a supervisor strode over, scolding the crowd sharply.
The crowd quickly dispersed, leaving Ye Hai alone.
The supervisor glared at him, barking, "Didn't you hear me speaking?"
Upon recognizing Ye Hai's face, he froze for a moment and then quickly smiled apologetically, "Oh, Dr. Ye! I didn't realize it was you."
"It's fine. I need to be on my way," Ye Hai chuckled, making his way to the elevator. As the doors were slowly closing, the occupants noticed Ye Hai and promptly reopened the doors.
Ye Hai entered with a smile, nodding in thanks to the people inside. Among them was the middle-aged black man from the hallway, who appeared a bit awkward, his thinning hair covered by glasses.
After a moment of hesitation, he mustered the courage to ask, "Dr. Ye, which floor are you going to?"
Almost all staff at Osborn recognized this young scientist, as Osborn had a website with information and photos of Ye Hai. His outstanding contributions had made him a star within the company, a figure of admiration for the employees, especially amongst the researchers, who held him in high regard.
"63rd floor!" Ye Hai replied casually.
Today, he was in a great mood. After all, securing 5% of Osborn's shares would make anyone feel good—especially as the company was valued in the hundreds of billions of dollars.
The black man called to the elevator's control panel, "63rd floor!"
A beautiful, sensual woman appeared on the screen and said, "Thank you!"
This woman was the AI managing many of the building's essential infrastructures.
"Thank you," Ye Hai nodded politely.
The man awkwardly touched his hair and introduced himself, "I'm Max Dillon."
Max Dillon? Isn't that the name of the Electric Person?
Ye Hai's spirit perked up, and he turned to examine the man more closely, reasonably concluding that this black man was indeed the Electric Person. What a pity he hadn't yet transformed into the Electric Person; otherwise, Ye Hai could study him further.
This unfortunate middle-aged black man had caught Ye Hai's attention, and Ye Hai was very much looking forward to the day he would become the Electric Man (Electro).
