Weiwei blinked. For once, Yihan looked frustrated.
"What did you do, Weiwei?" she asked. "Who did you talk to about it?"
Weiwei wrinkled her forehead. "About the Lántiān Group?"
"Yes."
They were in a small breakout room, where Yihan pulled Weiwei to discuss what she had described as a "serious problem" with Lántiān.
"I only spoke with Director Zhang a couple of days ago and told him about the same concerns you and I had discussed," said Weiwei.
Why is Yihan questioning me about my file? And why is she so unusually rattled?
"Why?" asked Weiwei. "What exactly happened?"
"Well, I've just had a very unpleasant conversation with their CFO," Yihan said, crossing her arms in front of her. "He was very pissed."
"About what? That the report is due?"
Yihan glared at Weiwei.
It turns out, she's quite scary when she loses her cool. I should've guessed it.
"Director Zhang had asked me to sign off and release the report two days ago," Yihan fumed. "I didn't realize I was going to be set up to deal with this kind of problem when he gave it to me!"
"Wait, what?"
She signed off on my report?
"Director Zhang asked you to release my report?" Weiwei asked again.
"Yes," Yihan dropped her arms in frustration bordering on anger. "Why didn't you tell me you discussed those quarter end sales with Lántiān!"
Weiwei stared.
"I did what?"
Yihan shook her head. "Their CFO gave me a hard time because we told them to refrain from rolling their debt into land sales in the future. I wish you gave me a heads-up!"
What is she talking about?
"But I didn't speak with them," protested Weiwei. "I don't even know who to speak to."
Yihan looked at Weiwei for a few moments.
"You didn't? Are you sure?" she finally said.
"Of course, I'm sure!"
"And no one else called them on your behalf?"
Weiwei shrugged. "I don't think so. At least, I didn't ask anyone to do that. Yihan, I didn't even know that you signed off on the file."
Yihan shook her head repeatedly again. "That doesn't make sense. That's all very strange. The only other person who could've known about it is Director Zhang. I'll go have a word with him."
She abruptly turned around.
"Could you let me know what you find out?" asked Weiwei feebly.
"Maybe," barked Yihan and stormed out.
Weiwei returned to her desk and checked her phone.
I'd like to pick you up today. I'll be downtown anyway.
Weiwei smiled to herself. Maybe Qi wasn't officially her boyfriend, but he wanted to drive her home from work. Weiwei mused for a while.
Is this what my days are going to be like? Waking up to the smell of him making breakfast, driving home together, talking about how our day was? Watching TV and making plans-even travel plans- in the evening?
She thought about their conversation about the Lántiān Group on the couch, and then their trip to Liuqing, and sweet warmth filled her body yet again, reaching all the way into her toes and her temples.
I have never imagined I could end up leading such a wonderful, happy life!
Weiwei couldn't wait for 5 o'clock, and signed off on time for once. She almost skipped her way through the lobby anticipating how Qi would open the car door for her and smile.
Wonderful, what a wonderful day! And what a wonderful life it is. Ah, I was so wrong before when I was moaning and complaining about my misery. I knew nothing back then. Life is brilliant, after all!
She turned the corner and walked a block, as agreed with Qi, because she didn't want anyone to see them together.
Finally, she saw Qi's car. He must've seen her as well, because he got out of the car and opened the passenger door for her. Weiwei jumped in, put her handbag on her lap and patted it lovingly.
Come here, bag, you're so cute!
She turned to Qi, who also got in and started the engine. She didn't notice a smile on his face. In fact, Qi looked quite preoccupied and serious.
"How was your day?" chirped Weiwei.
"I had a meeting with my grandfather," said Qi and glanced at her. "And there is something I wanted to discuss with you."
