I awoke to someone shaking me by my shoulders. "Celine," they whispered. My eyelids fluttered open. It was Avery.
"What is it?" I sat up, stretching. That was the first night since this mess that I'd gotten a good night's sleep. I was still blinking lazily when Avery said, "Someone's here."
That woke me up. I jumped to my feet and ran to the window. I peeked out from the curtain. It was a woman and a man. They looked to be in their late 20's, maybe early 30's. I waited a while for that gut feeling to start yapping in my ear, but it never came. The couple were peering into our car when I pushed open the door.
Their heads snapped in my direction and then they started jogging away.
"Hey!" I yelled. "Come back! Maybe we can help!"
The woman turned her head and looked at the man. And then they slowed to a walk before turning around.
"Did you need something?" I asked, genuinely wanting to help if I could. They looked scared. And hungry.
