Across town, Adrian sat in his office, the pale glow of his computer screen casting shadows on his face. His desk was cluttered with patient files, but his attention was nowhere near his work.
His phone sat on the corner of the desk, and he found himself glancing at it every few minutes, his fingers itching to pick it up. Bianca's last text still sat there, unanswered.
He hadn't deleted it.
"Adrian."
The sharp voice made him jump. He looked up to see Sarah standing in the doorway, her arms crossed.
"You're distracted again," she said, stepping into the office. "Is it Emily? Things at home still rough?"
Adrian's jaw tightened at the mention of his wife. "It's fine."
Sarah raised an eyebrow. "Sure doesn't look fine. You've been staring at that phone like it holds the meaning of life. If you don't want to talk about it, that's fine, but whatever's going on, it's affecting you. And your work."
