Songhai was unbearably cold today .
With temperatures dipping as low as - 45 degrees Celsius you would expect Songhai's campus to be desolate , moreso , considering it was the holidays that should have been true,but the amount of teenagers who where queing up while radiating infectious excitement clearly indicated otherwise .
Today was awakening day !
Throughout the cosmic federation alliance every human who had clocked sixteen years of age underwent a spirit awakening procedure in order to materialize their inherent origin ability . This procedure though short determined the fate and future of every human being . Therefore the excitement these youths bubbled with was relatable .
A temporary awakening facility was set up in the school's football field which was surrounded by federation soldiers armed to the teeth with their high caliber laser rifles . Their presence was the only factor preventing these hormone filled teens from doing anything stupid out of their excitement.
" NEXT" , the crisp voice of the doctor's secretary resounded in the frigid air signalling the entry of the next person in line . Although everyone standing in line was practically shivering from excitement one particular teen was somewhat detached from the atmosphere. Standing at the tail end of the queue hardly anyone paid any attention to him .
With a head full of jet black hair and irises so dark it seemed as if even the brightest of lights could not penetrate their darkness . Standing at about five foot nine his physique accentuated his facial features giving him a peculiar charm , combining all these with the lazy aura radiating from him he was a male version of a femme fatale.
"Say Dongfan what do you think my origin ability will manifest as" ?
The one who spoke just now was a fatty called Pang Pengyou ; he was Dongfang Yue's best friend since the beginning of high school .
It was a somewhat comical sight when the two of them were together ; while Dongfang Yue was tall and slender Pang Pengyou was short and fat ,so fat he could be mistaken for a giant meatball . How they even became best of friends was a mystery in itself.
" How do you expect me to know that , awakening an origin ability is random ."
" Say what if our origin abilities are so overpowered it defies common sense ? "
" Pang Pengyou can you try to stop daydreaming , considering our ordinary physiques we would be lucky to awaken a transcendent grade ability. "
" Ptueh , this young master's optimism is as high as the nine heavens , you know what go screw yourself I firmly believe my ability will be supreme grade".
Origin abilities were classified into four grades namely : mortal , transcendent , legendary and supreme ,there are rumors of a grade above the supreme grade , but then no one knows for sure .
"Pang Pengyou !"
"Okay am next up ,watch me as I awaken a supreme grade ability."
" Just get your ass to the tent and get it on with , don't delay me ."
About ten minutes later Pang Pengyou came out of the tent with a face resembling that of one who stepped in a pile of shit .
"Pfft ,humf , hahahaha, let me take a guess your origin ability must have been too heaven defying for you to pull that face ."
"Must you laugh ?"
" I just can't help it , I hope the great grandpa Pang doesn't use his supreme grade ability against me in annoyance ."
Swaggering towards the tent Dongfan Yue had to hold his ribs which were aching from the excessive laughter in order to avoid falling down . Gradually however he started straightening his expression before stepping into the tent while also feeling somewhat nervous.
"Sit down and relax your mind , the entire process is going to be very short," the doctor in charge said as she stood up to administer the last vial of origin ability awakening fluid .
Rolling up his sleeves the contents of the syringe
we're soon emptied into his veins.The actual awakening happened twenty four hours after the administration of the ability awakening fluid.
" Alright stand in front of that origin energy detector then place your palm in the indentation in it's centre."
The origin energy detector machine was a smooth mirror like machine about six feet tall with an indenture on its surface. It's main function was to test how much control one had over their origin energy by lighting up a set of spiral patterns, this in turn decided what grade their origin ability would be when it manifested .
Doing as he was instructed while closing his eyes to concentrate he felt some tiny but fast particles whizz by . He tried controlling the particles towards following the spiraling patterns for around four minutes before giving up due to exhaustion.
" Hmm ,fourty four ankhs of origin energy ? Am afraid the ability you will awaken will barely breach the transcendent grade . Don't let it knock you down though , some of your colleagues performed even worse than you .
Though he was pretty darn sure that he could never awaken an ability above transcendent getting a proper official statement still burst his bubble. Thanking the doctor he left the tent to meet up with fatty Lao .
" Sooo ... how was it ?"
"Barely reached transcendent potential ."
An akward silence settled between the two friends.

" Err Dongfan ,would you care for a drink ?"
" You know I don't drink but having one or two bottles wouldn't hurt , but you're paying ."
" No problem let's go ."
Exiting the campus premises the two friends soon found a drinking joint and let loose the steam accumulated throughout the day .

"Pang Pengyou do you really think that there's a chance of us awakening abilities greater than transcendent ? "
Dongfan Yue asked while throwing pebbles across the Qingshui lake disrupting the reflection of the moon while also scaring all the lakes critters into silence. The swaying reeds and the howling wind were an indication of an imminent downpour .
"I can't really say but the difficulty is as high as ascending the heavens , you know thinking about it isn't going to change anything ."
" Yeah ,I know ."
" How about a swim before heading home,helps to clear the mind ,heard my dad say it saved him from mom knowing he took alcohol countless times. "
" Nah , I'll pass , we better get going though, it seems there's going to be a thunderstorm . "
" On second thoughts that is true let's get out of here . "
Unfortunately however, the rain started even before they could leave the lake ,the ferocity of the howling winds and the intermittent flashes of lightning accompanied by loud blasts of thunder demonstrated the destructive power of mother nature .
Bidding farewell to Pang Pengyou and his parents who were persuading him to stay Dongfan Yue hurried towards his own apartment . By now the rain droplets were already as big as soybeans , the streets were totally empty now and only the sound of the rain beating the pavement could be heard . Suddenly all the sounds ceased at once , a surprised Dongfan Yue looked up only to see streaks of colorful lightning bolts dancing through the clouds , scared of being struck he bolted towards the alley way where his apartment was located . Halfway through keying in the access code for the door he suddenly froze ,rigidly turning his head the last thing he remembered was a greyish black bolt of lightning blasting towards his face while he muttered.
"Am so screwed . "
