"It's no one important." She said, trying to end the call, but answered it by mistake instead.
"Dang it." She muttered, shutting her eyes briefly in anger.
"Do you need me to help you?" Vance mockingly asked sternly. Taking his eyes off the road and resting them on her, he noticed her discomfort and, without warning, he pulled over at the other side of the road, which made other drivers behind curse at him.
If only they knew who he was.
"No, it's fine" Selena replied softly, and regained her composure before speaking.
"Who is this??" She asked, hoping they don't say something to implicate her.
It's the hotel reservation, ma'am. We are hearing some sounds coming from your room, can you tell us what it is about??" The caller said and Selena heaved a sigh of relief.
Even if they called at the wrong timing, at least they didn't rattle anything about what was in the room. They haven't even checked.
"Oh, I am so sorry," Selena said, letting out a small chuckle. "It's my pet dog, it doesn't know how to bark yet but don't worry, I am coming to get it right away."
"Okay ma'am. We will be waiting." The caller said before hanging up.
" I will send someone to retrieve the dog. Give me your reservation details. " Vance said, not sparing her a glance.
No, don't worry. I will handle it myself. He is always wild around strangers." She said, trying to mask her anxiety.
"That was an order, your response is not needed." He said, making her heart beat even more.
"If this is what it takes to bring you down, I am in for it." She thought and showed him the documents of her reservation on her phone.
"Fine." He said before pulling over.
He took out his phone from the pocket of his suit and Selena took her time in taking him whole. His long chestnut brown hair, his chiseled jawline, pointed nose and broad chest that threatened to jump out of his suit if care was not taken. He looked just like her father. The only difference was that he was much hotter, which made her fall for him at a very young age.
He took a screenshot of the information she had on her phone and, after a minute of typing, they resumed their journey.
The rest of the journey was silent till Selena chose to break the silence.
"So what's it like being the most powerful man in the world with no one at your side." With the expression on Vance's face, she was sure her question had an impact on him, but he just kept mute and continued driving.
Being okay with the fact that her presence must have brought back those memories that could help her break him, she kept her calm while her mind settled on what was going to happen at the hotel when they found out that it was his supposed wife that was the dog she was referring to.
She had been in the country for a month, trying to get Vance's attention, but all to no avail, since he was always busy and paid attention to no one. She finally got a chance when she was at a bar and heard Vance's supposed bride giggling and when her friends asked her why, she said it was because she was chosen as Vance's fake bride and the wedding was the next day.
Her friends congratulated her and told her to ask him for money so that they could get a wedding dress, but she told them that Vance had everything planned out already.
Selena didn't see anything to be happy about in that, but with the thirst of vengeance surging inside her, she went over to where they were and offered to buy them a drink with an excuse that she had once shared a night with Vance.
They all agreed happily. Of course, why wouldn't they? They were all hungry and cheap, but she managed to stay with them and made sure that her target was drunk in a stupor, after which she offered to take her home with the rest of them, not even knowing.
Vance has such a poor taste." She muttered, as she led the lady inside the hotel and to her room that day. She was sure that the CCTV cameras all over the place must have seen her, but she disposed it as a job for another day before going out to get all that would be needed to keep the lady in place.
When she returned, she did as she had planned and through the information she got from the lady's phone, she was able to know what to do the next day and how to start her act. She also saw the kissing part in the contract agreement but ignored it.
The horn from the car brought her back to the present as she turned over Vance, who had a cold expression and had been looking at her.
Have you ever heard of the name Lucifer or do you know who is called that?" He said and something about his look told her that something was wrong.
"He knows, he has figured it out." Her subconscious told her, but she refused to believe it.
No, I don't know anyone by that name and why would someone answer that kind of horrific name?" She answered boldly.
Vance smirked and honked again, palpitating her heartbeat.
"You should have asked," he said before withdrawing his gaze from her.
Why would someone answer that name?" She asked, trying to see if he would say anything concerning her family. Maybe something she didn't know that happened.
"You will know sooner or later," he said before pulling in front of a mansion that Selena knew too well.
Her father's mansion.
How can he be so heartless and still live here?" She thought, trying to hold back the tears that were already welling up in her eyes.
Ouch." She said, using her hands to cover her eyes after knowing fully well that she couldn't hold back her tears. The only option was to pretend like something had entered her eyes and, thankfully, Vance didn't bat an eye. It was more like his mind or attention was somewhere else.
A tall, skinny dark man came out of the house and, with a nod from Vance, he opened the gate for them to go in, which they did and Vance parked in the garage.
As they alighted from the car, Selena struggled with her wedding gown and when she finally got a hold of herself, she saw Vance's brown eyes glaring at her coldly, but she pretended not to be shocked and proceeded to the door.
Remembering that she was to act like a stranger and not like she owned the house, she stopped herself from putting in the code and waited for him to come.
With the look on Vance's face, she was sure he saw what she did but refused to say anything.
And as she entered, the memories came, the place she lost them all.
"I heard you had more than a dog in your room." He said, and she turned to meet his cold gaze.
