Mayor Jiang sat next to Wei Aihua, his face dark with anger.
Gu Nuannuan's words were harsh, but he wasn't blind to the fact that everything had been stirred up by his wife. "Sit down. What's the point of a family quarrel? As the eldest sister-in-law, just be quiet," Mayor Jiang reprimanded Wei Aihua, his words laced with both wisdom and warning.
If Jiang Chenyu were a tactful man, he might have scolded Gu Nuannuan to maintain family peace, allowing the situation to pass.
But Jiang Chenyu didn't seem interested in being tactful.
He remained silent deliberately, curious to see how far this girl, who dared to nickname him, disturb his father at night, and now openly insult Wei Aihua, would go.
Wei Aihua, now clearly at a disadvantage, was furious. She grabbed the hand-washing basin beside her, preparing to splash the water onto Gu Nuannuan.
However, Gu Nuannuan had already anticipated her actions. As soon as Wei Aihua reached for the basin, Gu Nuannuan swiftly stood up, holding her own hand-washing basin, and with precise aim, splashed Wei Aihua's face with her own water.
Some of the water also inadvertently splashed onto Mayor Jiang, who was seated nearby. Gu Nuannuan immediately bowed politely, saying, "I'm sorry, Mayor Jiang, I accidentally splashed you."
Mayor Jiang: "…"
Jiang Chenyu: "…"
Both brothers were stunned and at a loss for words.
Wei Aihua let out a shrill scream in the restaurant. "Ah!"
Gu Nuannuan casually handed her basin to the servant, clapped her hands, and sat back down in her seat. "We are both young wives of the Jiang family. The only difference is that you're older, and I'm younger. My status isn't lower than yours."
Just then, Jiang Lao entered the restaurant, accompanied by the housekeeper. As soon as he stepped inside, he sensed the strange atmosphere. Upon seeing his eldest daughter-in-law with a wet face, he knew something was off.
Jiang Lao took his seat at the head of the table, his face darkened. "What's going on here?"
Gu Nuannuan looked at Wei Aihua, waiting for her to complain first. After all, she hadn't done anything wrong—it was Wei Aihua who had provoked her.
In frustration, Wei Aihua stamped her feet and stormed out of the restaurant.
Sensing the seriousness of the situation, Jiang Lao turned to Gu Nuannuan. "What happened?"
Gu Nuannuan answered calmly, "Sister-in-law compared herself to a dog in Mrs. Chen's family. I thought she seemed a bit disoriented, so I poured some water on her to help her snap out of it. I guess the scream was because she regretted calling herself a dog."
Mayor Jiang could only think to himself, *I have no words for this.*
Jiang Chenyu looked at his new wife and mused, *It seems you're quite skilled at lying. I'll just stand back and watch this unfold.*
"Well, that's what happened," Gu Nuannuan concluded, addressing Jiang Lao.
Jiang Lao turned to his two sons. "Is what Nuannuan said true?"
The brothers exchanged glances. "Dad, I'm going to check on Aihua," Mayor Jiang said, standing up and leaving the restaurant without answering the question directly.
Jiang Chenyu also stood up and left, wordless, not feeling the need to explain anything further.
Gu Nuannuan noticed that she and Jiang Lao were now the only ones left at the table.
So she stood up too. "Dad, I'm going to catch up with my husband."
With that, she hurriedly followed Jiang Chenyu out of the restaurant.
Outside, the warm summer breeze brushed past her, carrying with it the distinctive warmth of the season. The wind tousled Gu Nuannuan's hair, which she gently tucked behind her ear with a small flick of her finger.
Her light skirt fluttered briefly in the breeze before settling back down.
Up ahead, Jiang Chenyu, still in his suit, noticed someone following him. He stopped, and Gu Nuannuan came to a halt a few steps behind him.
