Heavy rain was thrumming outside, the sky dark. From time-to-time thunder would roar through the night, lighting up the visage of a young woman on a hospital bed.
Her face was writhing in pain, as her screams once again joined the havoc from the storm outside.
"Just one more push, young miss", the midwife instructed.
The young woman, drenched in sweat, gave on more hard push through gritted teeth.
"That's it! That's it!" the midwife encouraged, trying to motivate the young mother.
"How much more?" The young woman asked exhausted. The pain causing tears to roll down her cheek.
"The head is almost out, this will be the last push", the midwife once again encouraged.
Steeling herself, she gave one last, long push, and the baby was finally born, screaming loudly.
"It's a boy! And a healthy one by the sounds of his lungs", the midwife smiled at the young woman, as she cut the cord and handed the baby to a nurse for cleaning.
Not hearing a response from the mother, the midwife looked at the news mother again, only to notice that she was laying utterly still.
Shocked, the midwife quickly checked up on her, only to discover that she had fainted, and her breath was shallow.
The midwife quickly found her phone before sending a quick text.
5 minutes later, five men in black suits entered the room, following behind a man in his mid-twenties.
"The child?", he asked, not deigning to look at it himself.
"The child is healthy. A boy", the midwife answered, her head bowing to the young man.
"The mother?"
"She fainted after the birth. Her breathing is shallow, and she will need to be hospitalized." The midwife answered, her head still bowed and her voice respectful.
The young man gestured to the men behind him before saying, "we'll take the mother". Having said his piece, he looked briefly at the young mother before turning around to leave.
The midwife, seeing this, couldn't help but ask, "what about the child?".
The young man, stopping briefly, simply said "take a DNA test to try and find it's father and deliver it. If the father does not want it, then just leave it at any old orphanage". Then he continued walking, the men in black suits carrying the young woman behind him.
