Finally, they reached their destination. It was a big white mansion in front of them and immediately David knew that this was the compound of the cartel. When they got to the entrance gate there were four guards standing in front the gate. When they saw Herald, one of the guard opened the gate.
The compound was big and everywhere outside the compound was filled with guards and other people. Herald just went to the front door, opened it and when they walked in, there were more guards and people inside the building. He saw and open room filled people and he just passed.
After a while of turning and walking through hallways, Herald finally stopped at a door with two guards in front of it, Herald entered the room and David followed.
The room had a wide space with two-book shelf in it and a large table with Leonard sitting behind it. There were two other men in the room, both were with guns and they just looked at him as Herald walked to Leonard.
"Finally, I was expecting you and the kid." Leonard said while smiling.
"We are here." Herald replied with no emotion on his face as usual.
Leonard leaned forward. "I was really impressed with the work the kid did yesterday, he took the man out with one shot and it was clean job too." Leonard said.
David was irritated with the compliment he was given by Leonard but he did not say anything.
"Well I wasn't surprised when I heard that the job was done cleanly after seeing what you could do with a gun, but you should know that the job was an easy one so don't get too full of yourself." Leonard said to David.
On hearing what Leonard just said to him, he got furious and just wanted to say something to Leonard but he held himself. David was furious because Leonard claimed that he was full of himself after the job, Herald just stood there and listened.
"Alright now, it's time for you to get what you came for." Leonard said as he gave a sign to one of the men there.
The man brought a bag, dropped it on the table, and opened. The bag was filled with cash and David was amazed.
"Thank you," Herald said as he closed the bag and held it.
David was still baffled with how much money was inside the bag and it was just for that job, at that moment his mood changed. Herald turned and walked towards the exit and David knew that he was meant to follow him but before he left the room, Leonard said. "I will be seeing the kid soon."
Herald walked out of the room when Leonard finished talking and David followed him. Herald turned to David. "The money in this bag is all yours."
"What! Are you serious?" David was speechless.
"Yes." Herald answered as he opened the bag and brought out some small cash from it. "Take this. I will take the rest to the apartment. I would have given you the bag to take it yourself but it's not save to carry a bag like this through the streets of this city." He continued.
David took the money from Herald's hand and he understood what his uncle said about him carrying the money.
"If I am not at the apartment and you need me, you can find me here. You can come here anytime you want and you can also hang around here if you have nothing to do, and remember, if Leonard calls for you, tell me." Herald said as he left.
He watched Herald as he walked away. Herald only told David that he could hang out in the compound just so he could keep a close eye on him and nothing else.
David put the money in his pocket and started to look around, he realized that he was hungry and so he use this opportunity to go see Jeremy because it had been a while since he saw him. David left the compound in a rush.
David got to the store and walked into it. He looked around and luckily for him, few people were inside the store so that meant that Jeremy would be less busy.
He went to the cereal shelf, took three cereals and walked up to Jeremy. Jeremy was happy to see David and annoyed because it has been two days now since David came to see him.
"How are you doing?" David asked as he dropped the cereal for Jeremy.
"So you finally you decided to show up." Jeremy replied.
"Sorry, I have just been going through a lot a lately." He said.
Jeremy took the cereal, packed it and gave it to David. "Here."
"Oh here, take." David handed Jeremy the payment for the cereal.
Jeremy was surprised that David was actually paying for what he bought, so he took the money, "Wow, you are paying."
"Yeah, I got a job." David replied.
"Oh, no wonder you didn't come for those two days, you must have been busy with your new job."
"Yeah."
"So what is this job all about?" Jeremy asked curiously.
David knew that he could not tell Jeremy about the cartel and what he does for them so he just have to lie to him, which he did not like to do.
"Oh yeah, I work for a private company, I just do some small errands for them, you know regular stuff." David answered.
Before Jeremy could ask any other question, David changed the topic "So how is your mom and dad?"
"They are both good, dad is struggling a little with his work, though he will pull through, he always does." He replied.
David could see the uncertainty written all over Jeremy's face. "Yeah, he will pull through." He assured him.
More people came into the store and David knew that Jeremy would become busy.
"So, I will be going now, need to get back to my job."
"Okay, we will see later then."
"Yeah." David said as he slowly walked out of the store.
Before he could leave the store Jeremy shouted, "Hey David, I'm really proud of you for getting a job."
David turned and gave a small smile and left the store. Jeremy could not help but notice that something was going on with David but he was just happy for him because now he can take care of himself and he would also start paying for what he bought.
