Chapter 11 - Shadow

Shadow was a Rottweiler-German Shepherd mix, and he became a cherished member of our family on the day Baby passed away. We named him Shadow, inspired by the Golden Retriever from the movie *Homeward Bound*. Although he primarily became Michael's companion, Shadow and I shared a special connection, as I held him throughout the journey home on the day we adopted him. As Shadow matured, he had frequent altercations with Lucky the First. These daily barking disputes arose from our belief at that time against neutering or spaying our pets. Despite this, Shadow had an endearing habit of sneaking up on insects and attempting to pounce on them, although he invariably missed. On one occasion, Shadow managed to get his head stuck in a portable dog food bowl. Despite my mother's efforts, which included applying butter around his neck, she was unable to free him. Consequently, she contacted animal control, and we watched anxiously from the kitchen window as an officer successfully removed the bowl from Shadow's head. Shadow developed a close bond with Christmas, another one of our dogs, who was born approximately two years after we brought Shadow into our home. Shadow provided comfort to me following Lucky's passing. When we relocated from my childhood home, Shadow remained an outdoor dog. Tragically, a few months after the move, both Shadow and Christmas wandered away and never returned. Despite our constant efforts to locate them, they remained elusive. I dearly miss Shadow and fervently hope that he and Christmas found happiness wherever their journey took them.
