Benji was an All-American Dog. The term "All-American" denotes a dog that has been bred in the United States and possesses a diverse lineage, regardless of the specific breeds involved. We acquired Benji from our neighbor, and he bore a striking resemblance to the dog featured in the "Benji" films, although our Benji had a grey coat. Unlike the well-mannered canine from the movies, our Benji exhibited behavioral challenges; he could not be left alone at home unless confined to a cage, as he would otherwise wreak havoc throughout the living space. His preferred treat was saltine crackers; he could detect the sound of the package crinkling from across the house. On one occasion, I attempted to open a package quietly, but Benji heard the noise and appeared instantly, his eyes wide with anticipation. We cherished Benji immensely; he was among the finest dogs we had ever owned. Whenever Rosa and I returned home from school, Benji would joyfully run in circles. We had him for four months, but one day, he was stolen from my grandmother's backyard. Rosa and I were heartbroken, and over time, we gradually came to terms with the reality that he would not return. I still miss him dearly.
