Chapter 12 - Outskirts

* Growl *

A five-foot-tall beast that looked like a dog suddenly lunged at the boy with black hair of the same height.

The boy dodged to the side bringing a bluish sword downwards

* Slash *

The sword scratches past the neck leaving a deep wound.

" Arrgggggh "

The beast screamed in agony.

Evan had been fighting this beast for a few minutes now.

Many scars could be seen on the beast's suggesting how fierce the battle was.

Although it was not very strong due to how big it was all the wounds created by the short sword were very sallow.

As the battle went on, The beast was becoming more angered as the wounds were building on its body making it throw all sorts of attacks without any pattern.

Seeing the chance Evan parried the incoming attack and then pointed it straight towards the beast holding it with both hands.

He gathered the strength to move forward.

" Dieee! "

* Pierced*

The sword just penetrates through its head.

Evan stood there for a while with the sword still inside the beast. Seeing that the body was not moving only then did he was relieved.

" Whew, this was the second beast of the day. "

He sat down on the ground to recover the stamina even retrieving the sword from the beast.

He didn't even have that much strength left!

Fighting the two beasts within two hours had greatly exhausted him.

It was his twelfth day traveling and he had reached the outskirts two days ago.

Ever since he started his journey he had been fighting these mutated beasts every single day.

He encountered many types of beasts during these past days counting up to 20. Evan found it easier when dealing with the smaller type just like the one that he fought the first day.

The bigger ones were hard to kill just like the beast he was fighting just now. They had more muscles and stronger bones compared to the small beasts.

It was the main reason that they would only die with a strike on their heads attacking other parts would only limit their movement and it was not life-threatening.

He also couldn't just attack their head straight without exhausting them or else there was a higher chance of missing.

And if he misses it this close to the beast it will be an end for him.

After gathering some strength Evan pulled out the sword and looked at it.

" I still wonder what this is made up of. "

It still shines in a bluish-silver color and was not very damaged in those fights only a few scratches.

Resting for a while Evan looked at his body.

There were bruises all around it, but it was not very serious.

As for the pieces of cloth all around his body. Well, they were to cover the wounds that he received from previous battles.

It was all thanks to the armor that he still hadn't received any major injury.

Seeing that he was not bleeding from any part he went back to rest on the ground.

' Let's rest for a while. '

Lying on the ground on his back he looked towards the blue sky.

' What a view. '

Away from the settlements, alone, and in a death zone looking up to the clear blue sky after a bloody battle. Indeed, What a view.

He chuckled.

Resting for ten minutes he examined the outskirts.

He observed many destroyed buildings, it was the same as the inner parts of the city, almost destroyed. Buildings here were much smaller compared to the inner area with only two to three floors. He even noticed a few houses here.

As for the beasts?

Well, Evan was not feeling that same suffocating sensation he had been feeling when he was inside the city but still, it was his second day here and he had encountered at least 3 beasts.

And all three were larger and difficult to kill!

' Old man you told me that the outskirts were safer than the inner part of the city! '

' Less dangerous my foot!!! '

Bringing his thoughts back, he looked at the dead body of the beast.

He decided not to cut it open and get its meat or its fur as he had more than enough.

Moreover, it will take some time he still has three more kilometers to go and it is already around 5:00 pm.

He will be later than his scheduled time if he doesn't hurry.

***

After almost three hours he was standing in front of a not-so-destroyed house.

The sun was almost gone painting the sky in orange color.

' Look like I am not so unlucky. '

Just as he completed traveling for another three kilometers and was about to look for a place to stay he spotted this place, it was not utterly destroyed like other buildings.

Without any hesitation, Evan chose this place to stay.

Arriving at what seemed like the front door he tried to open it only to realize that it was stuck.

He tried to apply more force.

"Argh, damn it! "

He didn't have time to find another place as he was already late, and he might not find such a safe place anytime soon.

So he decided to find some other entrance.

Walking all around the house he noticed that there was not a single entrance from where he could enter.

He tried to break the glass windows only to fail miserably.

just as he was about to give up he noticed a strange path that goes downwards in the backyard.

' A basement? '

Following the path he found a strange door.

' Let's hope this opens. '

* Click *

' Ohhh! it's unlocked! '

Evan's eyes lit up knowing that he didn't have to waste time looking for some other place.

Just as Evan entered the room as if detecting something all the lights in the room went on.

" !!! "

Evan was so shocked that he almost jumped.

" ..... "

" Whew, that almost gave me a heart attack. "

He took a long breath and surveyed his surroundings when his gaze suddenly locked on something.

' Isn't it.. '

' Isn't it..... '

He paused and than shout out loud.

" A Gun! "

There on a side, he saw a gun hanging on the wall looking very futuristic, straight out of a sci-fi movie he watched once.
