Year 2024
Rosaline's POV
I left the remote area where my father had placed me. People's ever-evolving lifestyles are unrestricted by the vast changes in the world. There was everything in this earth, from imps to werewolves to grims, from vampires hiding in the dark corners to angels radiating the most in the warm sunlight. Humans are the least powerful and most defenseless species, at the bottom of the rule. They have no idea how dangerous worldwide is that they live in. Despite being the lowest species, they are the most in demand in the food chain.
I'm still working on getting my retribution, but it's really difficult to discover a path that leads to the heavens. I've already made two unsuccessful tries. In an attempt to fit in, I made the decision to enter the ordinary lives of others. I had nothing saved except my father's soul pendant, which I could use to channel my powers. I believe in the curse now, Nothing sognoficant has come to my attention as i am seeking answers. It had become hard for me to get by in daily life because its the boredom which is killing me. It's difficult to survive like this. As i have honed my abilities, I used my experience to land a post-assistant director position in a multinational corporation to keep my life going.
Monday morning, after a continuous thirty minutes ringing of my alarm, I finally woke up. I had to get ready quickly because the company is hosting a VIP visit today. Rumor has it that for the past year, my present boss has been attempting to sell the company to this VIP. At last, he caved and agreed to come visit. I changed into a pale blue blouse, a black mid-length skirt, and a matching blazer after taking a bath; it was probably cold outside as because of the rain.
I hurried over to my desk, took my my papers and keys, and locked my door before I left. "Why are you always in such a rush?" inquired Nathan, my neighbor next door. Standing at almost six feet tall, he has just the correct amount of muscle in every area. "No, I'm not. I just have to be early today," I said, grinning as I turned to face the parking lot. Nathan posed the same queries he had been posing for the past two years: "We can go out for coffee sometime." I apologize, Nathan. Perhaps another time.
I was aware of the repercussions of growing close to someone. I've already dropped two sets in the love game. I do not want another person to stop breathing. I started my car and drove through the lush foliage to my office in the metropolis. The drive took roughly an hour. To be closer to nature, I chose to live on the outskirts. Just as I arrived at the parking lot, a black SUV pulled up next to me. I was certain that this was the VIP. I hastily greeted him. "Hello, sir. This is Rose, the assistant director. It's good to see you here".But he didn't answer me.
Once more, I called out to him. He wore a black suit and had an earphone in his ear. "I'm waiting for my boss; he should be here shortly." He finally replied."So who are you?" I asked."Ma'am, we are his bodyguards checking the safety of the parameters." He stated. Feeling embarassef, I quietly nodded and made my way to the elevator. How will i know that he is not the boss. The formal suits did the trick i guess.
Sam made fun of my punctuality as soon i entered. "Something last minute came up," I murmured. The managing director, Sam, is constantly chasing me, waiting for me to make a mistake. There was a disturbance next to the elevator when I got back to my office and was having my coffee. I spilled my coffee over my skirt in my haste to see what was going on. It's already a terrible day. I hurried to wash up so I could get clean. Thankfully, I was dressed in black. I noticed that it is the new VIP who was the cause of the ruckus near the elevator. I went back to my office, took out my diary, and hurried to the elevator area. He was approaching me as soon as I was leaving my office.
He exuded a menacing presence due to his height and complexion. I could not take the intensity with which he was staring at me, so I quickly dropped my head in response. He was presented to me by my supervisor Sam, who said mockingly,"This is Rose, our assistant director; she is very capable." I extended my hand to shake hands, and he said, "We'll see how capable you are," shaking hands with me. He grabbed my hand firmly, and as soon as he did, I felt a shock go through my entire body. As soon as I looked up, he was staring at me. Sam said, "He's Mr. Adam Black, our new CEO." Mr. Adam gave a nod and walked out to see around with Sam.
After getting myself together and calming down, I headed to the meeting room. On my way to the meeting room, I ran into Emma. She works with my team as an employee. The woman asked, "What happened to your face?" with a smile. I questioned her worriedly, "Why is something wrong"?," you seem to have applied a lot of blush today, any special occasion?". When I realized what was wrong, I corrected myself and gave Emma a tight smile. I don't remember when was the last time i got so worked up. Together, we went into the board room, and I sat down right next to Sam. Mr. Black eventually entered the room, bringing quietness in the room with his presence. He walked past me to sit at the far end of the table.
"Greeting everyone, I am Adam black, the new appointing CEO of this company. We are here to take this venture to different heights, for that there will be a trial period for three days. My team will monitor every employee's past and ongoing projects to establish the ground for you to keep working here. There will be a raise for the excellent work and bonus for the hard worker. Those not meeting the said criteria will be unemployed, and we will have some new position open up. We are adamant about doing our good in the enterprise's interest."
As soon as he finished sharing his views, there were murmurs in the room. Just three days to assess us is not enough. But to keep myself in the race I have to put my best foot forward. I noticed Mr. Black. He was busy arranging the papers in front of him. But he suddenly glanced up, making my heart leap in my chest.
I lowered my gaze and concentrated on the documents in front of me as I waited for everyone to exit the room. I walked out of the conference room and approached my cabin after everyone had left. Sam was standing close to my cabin door from a distance. "They only plan to retain the managing director or the assistant. It is said to be preferable if one person does all the labor." Sam spoke in a single breath. I expressed my opinion to her with scornful glances."Oh, so now they know who is more competent?".
Sam gave me a stern look before slamming the door behind her. Through the glass, I could see Emma staring at me sympathetically. I glanced at her and gave her a thumbs up. Smiling, she returned to her desk. My phone rang when I was sorting documents on my table. A female voice called out to me, "You are needed in the CEO's office." I picked up a pen and my usual diary, collected myself, and made my way to the CEO's door. Emma asked me, "Where are you going now?" as I walked by her desk. I looked at her before pointing to the elevator. "To the CEO's?" . I nodded and left.
As soon as I got to the floor that housed the CEO's office. The floor was formerly entirely blue and white, but now it was all grey. The carpet was black, the sofa complemented the newly painted pastel blue walls. How did they altered it in a day, rather in few hours.
I noticed the new receptionist seated right outside the office. "Mr. Black has requested for me," I told her as I approached to her. "You are Miss Rose," she said, casting a bored glance in my direction. I said, "Yes, the assistant director." She murmured something while picking up her phone. "Mr. Black will see you now".
Sam was seated when I walked into the office. I noticed that Mr. Adam was facing the opposite direction. He turned to face me when I greeted him. "Miss Rose, kindly have a seat. As you have both heard, I have chosen to retain the managing director or the assistant.I will not be posting the same work twice. Therefore, one of you must leave. After three days, my team and I will evaluate both of your submissions and make a decision." Mr Black explained. Sam excitedly declared," Sir, I have been the most competent worker in this firm. I have given everything for this venture". Mr Black looked at Sam, saying, "Miss Sam, I think I will know it after three days. If you have done your work, you don't have to prove yourself with your words".
I was startled when Mr Black's phone rang. He signaled for us to exit his workspace. Sam opened her mouth to say something as soon as we came out, but I swiftly passed her. I was really not in a mood to hear her demening words. I was done for the day.
