Chapter 12
Unable to bear it any longer, Asher excused himself, slipping out of the crowded room and into the cool night air. He took a deep breath, the fresh scent of the forest grounding him, calming the storm raging within.
But he wasn't alone for long. Moments later, he heard footsteps behind him. Turning, he saw Skylar standing there, her expression cautious, uncertain.
"Asher," she said, her voice soft, her gaze holding a mixture of curiosity and something deeper—something that spoke to the connection they had once shared. "You're still here."
"Skylar," he replied, his voice barely above a whisper. For a moment, neither of them spoke, the silence between them heavy with unspoken words.
Finally, she broke the silence. "Why are you out here? You should be gone. The scene you did earlier was dumb…"
"And I apologize for it."
She looked around. "Fine."
