Chapter 7 - Pseudo

"Cor, in this low rank NSC we obviously don't spend a lot of times on weapons. Hand to hand combat is the focus. However, upper rank NSC's focus mainly on weapons, and middle rank NSC's scout for student with talent in weaponry to cater to the needs of the upper rank NSC's. Thus, just being physically strong, while it is a great boon, is not at all enough for the scouts. Do you understand this?" Says teacher H. This is a lot of information to take in all of a sudden. And besides, it does not make a lot of sense!

Of course, it is easy to guess why common people would need weapons to fight against evolved animals. But the upper rank NSC tries creating Elites! Elites are pretty much all-powerfull right? Weapons like swords and spears could not hurt them and bullets most certainly can't right? "Why would upper rank NSC's mainly focus on weapons if they aim to create Elites?"

Teacher H looks at me for a moment in slight confusion. But then, realization appears on his face. "I see. I think your knowledge about Elites is outdated. What do you know about them in detail?"

The look of confusion on Cor's face only grows more pronounced. "They're genetically modified humans with great power and strength, enough to stop bullets and swords with their skin and enough to defeat most monsters. They differ in strength between lower Elites and higher Elites?"

A slight smile is beginning to show on teacher H's face. "I'm guessing you have not talked to many upper classers yet? Let me clear it up for you:

First of all, there are also middle Elites, but all of that is talking about true Elites. And it is true that most true Elites, especially those above the lower Elites, fight without weapons. But have you ever wondered, if there are so little Elites and if most of them are occupied with getting stronger, fighting monsters or leading companies, how come there are still 'Elites' in every town?"

Cor answers with hesitation. "Because they are forced to?"

A wide smile is now resting on teacher H's face. This last answer is especially funny to him apparently. "Nobody truly forces Elites except for stronger Elites and they don't particularly care too much about every town. No, it's because it's not real Elites protecting them! To become an Elite through ascension instead of bloodline, your body has to be capable of some extreme feats. Almost inhuman feats like quick regeneration and extreme strength have to be already present to support the ascension. People in this stage are called 'Pseudo Elites', and there are quite a lot of them in comparison to true Elites. I am one actually! Most people in the upper class and some in the middle class of upper rank NSC's get the chance to become pseudo's. But, because they are not true Elites and thus are incapable of stopping bullets and swords with their skin, they have to be good at handling weapons. Does this clear it up for you?"

It takes some time for the question to register in Cor's mind. He's still dealing with the sudden influx of worldview-changing information. Pseudo Elites? Ascension? Teacher H is a pseudo? This is all too much, he will need to adjust his goals for this information! He has to tell his parents too! "I need some time for myself teacher H, this is alot to handle."

Teacher H looks at him with understanding. "Alright, take your time. But first I want to get to the reason I asked you to stay here. You are genetically gifted with a very strong body. This means that you could have potential for ascension. However, focus on finding a weapon and learning some movements because you won't fullfill that potential without even getting into the upper class. I don't want to see you go wasting your body. Also, everything said here stays between us. We don't want too many townsfolk knowing that their Elite protector is not a true Elite, even if they are more than capable of protecting towns. Now, get back to your room and prepare for the next lesson."

With furrowed brows, Cor says "Yes sir, I understand." While walking away he thinks to himself 'I have to get this information to my parents somehow, but for now, my goal has changed. I have to learn a weapon quickly and get into the upper class!'.
