With the hours of night's rest, Evelyne's mind was calmer now.
The heaviness that she had the previous night had slowly diminished to which she performed her tasks without too much stress.
Later that evening, she had been given a task to clean the attic and by the time she was done, darkness had already taken over but that did not worry her. What worried her was the corridors that were not lit and as she moved downstairs, she kept on looking over her shoulder.
Just as she had taken her last step at the long staircase, she noticed a shadow that was projected by the moon which quickly disappeared as if it was never there.
Not being the curious kind, she quickly started to head towards the main areas of the palace but every now and then, she made sure to turn around to ensure that no one was following her.
When she got to the heart of the palace where the lanterns had already been lit, her heart became calmer and for the last time, she turned to look behind her.
"Maybe it was just my imagination." She muttered but as soon as those words slipped out of her mouth, she felt someone behind her causing her body to jerk.
When she fully turned around, her eyes met with the cloaked face and due to the rush of adrenaline, she could hear her own heart thumping in her chest.
"So it is you."
Before the cloaked person could get closer to her, she turned on her heels and finding the nearest room, she quickly twisted the knob and got in.
'so it is you.'
She recalled. The voice was in no way humane and the clothes that the person wore did not make her any less scared.
When she had finally managed to lock the door, she turned around such that her back was against the white painted door.
She had started to calm down but hearing someone's voice, she almost jumped out of her skin.
"I had only asked for a glass of blood. But a fresh warm blood will definitely do."
At first, she did not see the person until he emerged from the part of the room that was not lit.
The voice was not new to her because she had almost bumped into the very same person the previous morning. It was prince Daceus.
While she had been busy trying to calm herself down, the prince had been observing her and being a vampire, he could hear how her heart beat faster as if someone had scared her and for a fleeting moment, her soft features distracted him.
First, it was those emarald eyes and intrigued him to know more, his eyes moved from those eyes to her small pointed nose and then to those plump pink lips that had been slightly parted.
For a maid, she was very attractive.
When his eyes fell on her short golden blonde hair, he finally recalled having seen her the previous morning. With those looks, he would have definitely noticed her but over the years, he had never seen such a face which only meant she was new here.
When he started to move towards her, her hands flew to the door knob and trying to open the door severally, her attempts failed.
When he got closer to her, she subconsciously closed her eyes waiting for him to either hit her or do something worse but when seconds passed by, she slowly opened them only to find him sitting on the edge of the large bed.
Out of plight, she had not noticed his bare upper body which had water droplets on it. Seeing that, her fear transformed into embarrassment causing her to quickly look away.
"You are new here. Aren't you." She heard him say. His words neither felt like a statement nor a question to which she nodded but when he did not speak, she voiced out her words. "Yes your highness."
"That explains why the magic balm went missing after your arrival. Do you have something to tell me?"
Those had been the last words she had not expected and in as much as she did not react outwardly, she could feel her stomach drop.
"No your highness. I don't think I know what you are talking about."
Her words were composed and she felt lucky that she was not looking at him in the eye because she feared that he would find out the truth.
During her month's stay here, she had not met prince Daceus as he had been away but now in his presence, she could feel his intimidating aura that caused her to want to run away.
"Well, let us just hope you are speaking the truth because who knows what will happen to the person who was bold enough to commit such a crime."
At his words, she could feel her knees giving way with fear. With the way the prince spoke, it felt as if he knew that she was the one who had stolen but even with his words, she could not bring herself to admit that she was the one who stole.
When silent fell between them, she raised her eyes without raising her head only to see him pick a towel that was on top of the bed and when he turned his head towards her, she quickly lowered her gaze.
Wanting to step out of the room as soon as possible, she parted her lips ready to speak but just then, there was a knock on the door. "Thank god." She said to herself but her relief was short lived.
"Who is it." Prince Daceus inquired.
"It is the maid. I have brought your blood."
"There is no need for that. You can return it back to the kitchen."
When she heard prince Daceus' response, her blood drained from her cheeks.
