Chapter 7 - rare chances

The look on the prince's eyes was murderous as he searched for answers from those emarald eyes and in the next moment, he abruptly grabbed her wrist and pulled her against the cold wall

"It's time for you to talk princess. Give me all the reasons as to why you are here."

His voice was dark. Menacing, and his eyes demanded for answers.

Gasping for air while trying to free herself from his grip, she was quick to say.

"I don't have any reasons. I swear."

Just by looking at him, she could see her own life slipping out of her body. She knew the intensity of her mistakes and there would be no way that she would survive.

When she thought about how she was going to die, a tear slipped out from the corner of her eye.

She was just a vulnerable girl whereby her magic had not bloomed even after all those years which made her an outcast in her own family. Maybe if she possessed magic like her other siblings, she would wiggle herself out of her current predicament but unfortunately for her, she would not escape.

"Girl, you better start speaking because only I know what will happen to you if you lie to me. What other reasons brought you here other than stealing the magic balm?!" Every word that left his mouth was emphasized and the more she became quiet, the more he squeezed her delicate wrist causing her to wince.

Again out of nowhere, she found herself being dragged by the prince out of his room and within a short span of minutes, they were standing in the palace high tower to which she found herself standing at its edge.

All that was needed was one push and she would fall down from there.

"Are you ready to speak."

Came his voice from behind and after a short silence, she said,

"Even if I was to tell you, you would still kill me."

As if she had said something funny, the man behind her chuckled. His laugh was a reaffirmation that there was no way she was going to survive.

Unexpectedly, he pushed her causing her to almost fall but with him still holding her wrist, she did not fall. Her life was now hanging on a thin rope.

She could not see the ground to which she would die on due to the darkness but that would still not assure her shivering heart.

"P.. Please. Don't."

She was just a normal person and out of instinct, she found herself pleading for her own life.

"I won't let go if you are willing to speak but that does not guarantee that you will not die by my hands."

When he said that, he loosened his grip and for a moment, her brain became numb while her body started to embrace her fate.

Not allowing her to fall, the prince pulled her towards him causing their bodies to collide.

Once he had freed her hand, Evelyne took two steps away from the tower's edge.

"I was ordered by my father to disguise myself as a maid and take the magic balm." She admitted while swallowing hard.

She was betraying her own father and she was not proud of it but then, if she were to safeguard his secret, would he even appreciate it?

The answer was a simple no and that mere thought caused her to momentarily close her eyes.

"I'm listening.."

His voice brought her back to the present and meeting his gaze, she continued.

"I was supposed to go back after I did what he had told me but he does not want me back. My life is now in your hands and if you are going to kill me, I'm ready."

There were no emotions on her face as she said those words.

She had cried herself to sleep during most nights such that it had become pointless for her to shed more tears. When she could not keep up with his gaze, she lowered her head to look at the cemented floor.

With the two standing in front of each other under the moonlight that was almost fully covered by the grey clouds, prince Daceus took a step forward and in as much as Evelyne wanted to take a step backwards, she found herself rooted in one place.

Under his scrutiny, she felt small and vulnerable. Someone weak considering her status as a woman who also possessed no magic. She knew that she could never outrun a vampire and rather than delaying her eventual death, she chose to approach it.

" In three days time, there will be a ball in your home. I shall go with you and I expect you to find the magic balm and return it to me."

Hearing that, she raised her head. There was a questioning look on her face because those were not the kind of words she was expecting.

"I'm giving you a chance to rectify your mistake and let me tell you this, I don't give second chances to many so you better use yours wisely."

"But what if I fail to get it?" She questioned to have his eyes narrow.

"Then that shall be your last day to see sunrise."

Not caring about whether she would escape the palace or find her way to her own room, prince Daceus started to walk away from there.

With him two meters away from her, Evelyne also followed him.
