I'm not Gege, trust.

Ai Amo spoke up. "Will he be okay!?"

Rion rolled her eyes. "He's the last person you need to be worrying about. It's only a matter of time before he catches back up."

Even if she tried, Rion's words didn't reassure her.

However, Nagumo smiled at the mother and daughter duo. "Trust us on this one. He can handle himself."

Konomi Amo, the daughter, crossed her arms. "He's a meanie."

Sakamoto pulled his pistol out of the back of his pants. "Let's get rid of this last guy."

Leaning out of the window, Sakamoto closed his left eye to aim at Kobayashi's head.

*scree*

Suddenly, without notice, Kobayashi swerved out of the way before Sakamoto shot and came to a stop on the freeway.

Nagumo tilted his head to the side. "What is he doing?"

Rion leaned her head back. "I would say the cliche, 'looks like he gave up,' but he'll eventually be back."

Sakamoto put his pistol away. "Hopefully, he'll run into Toji."

...

Toji P.O.V.

*grab*

The guy with three piercings on each eye can barely make a noise as he squirms as I hold his neck. "*Glurk*!"

Now comes the hard part. "Who hired you?"

I need to figure out how these guys got the intel. Everything has been too convenient. Velcro is working with the chairman, so if I can get the source, I can take out the problem.

Lessening my grip on his throat, he speaks. "An assassin never reveals his contacts. DIE!"

Gas starts leaking from his mouth.

*snap*

Poison.

He couldn't use it fast enough since I was choking him.

I'll need to be more careful about that stuff in the future. My body isn't great with man-made poisons.

I've got natural curse resistance but seemingly lost my ability to see and sense curses. Who knows what my regeneration looks like for poisons?

Whatever, it's not like it matters right now. He probably has an antidote on him even if I did inhale the gas.

It's pretty strange how easy everything has been.

I guess my perception has been warped due to Satoru Gojo.

Not everyone is a monster like he is.

I wonder how strong he has become. Who knows where he is six years after awakening as this generation's strongest sorcerer?

It's one more reason I need to keep these people alive and use the Order's connections.

I need to find out what the hell happened while I was gone.

*gulp*

I swallow the inventory curse.

Anyway, I better catch up with the others to get my payday.

*ring*

*ring*

Uzuki's phone started ringing.

His eyes widened as he started sweating.

Everyone in the car noticed Uzuki's condition. He hadn't shown this much emotion, even when fighting against Toji.

Nagumo tilted his head. "What's up?"

Uzuki took in a deep breath. "I need to take this. Let's take a break and pull over."

Rion raised an eyebrow. "That seems kinda stupid, considering we've got assassins after us. Can't you put it on speaker?"

Uzuki hit the brake and slowed down to a stop.

Rion rolled her eyes. "Damnit, alright. Go talk to your girlfriend. I need to take a smoke break, Sakamoto, Nagumo, can you watch over them?"

Sakamoto looked slightly irritated, but Nagumo smiled as he pulled out a coin.

He turned to Konomi. "Which hand is the coin in?"

Rion stepped out while Uzuki walked down the tunnel to take the call secretly.

Before making his way down all the way down the tunnel, Uzuki turned to Rion. "Hey, Akao."

She turned around and tilted her head to the side. "Huh?"

He looked at the ground. "Would you do anything for your niece?"

Rion pondered for a moment. "Well, I'd kill anyone who even thought about touching a hair on her head. I've trained her in The Paths, but I want her away from this assassin shit."

Uzuki looked straight at her. "So, you'd turn the world against you to protect them?"

She instantly nodded. "Even if I had to die for her to be safe."

He turned around. "Thanks..."

All Rion did was raise an eyebrow before walking outside and taking a break.

Pulling out his phone, he gulped.

*ring*

A voice spoke up as the phone was instantly picked up. "It's about time we talked. I was just about to kill one of your friends."

Uzuki grits his teeth as he clenches his fist. "Please, give me some more time."

The voice sounded disappointed. "Why do you think you infiltrated the JCC? If you're going to be useless, I might as well kill everyone here. Originally, I wanted you to capture them, but now you're going to kill them. The chairman position is mine."

Uzuki fell on his knees. "It's a child..."

The voice spoke up with an emotionless tone. "Hmm, I guess I'll start with that Gaku kid."

Uzuki's eyes widened. "Wait!"

A sound came over the phone. "*BAM*"

The voice spoke back up. "He's in pretty rough shape."

Another younger voice came from the background. "Drop dead asshole. *BAM*. Ouch."

In the previous timeline, Uzuki could've killed Kindaka to satisfy The Voice or his brother Sei Asaki's request for infiltration to get him to the chairman position.

Tears started forming in the corners of his eyes. "Sei, please stop. Fine, I'll do it."

Sei cleared his throat. "It's Asaki to you. You have an hour. If they aren't dead, say goodbye to everyone at the orphanage."

The line went silent as he hung up on Uzuki.

...

Kei Uzuki P.O.V.

I have to do this.

Everyone at the orphanage is too important to me.

Even if the world is against me, I must keep them alive.

Akao was right. I'd do anything to protect my friends. I've never killed a child, and I don't want to do it. They are so innocent.

It's my fault that they are in this situation.

I'm so sorry.

I'm just a powerless kid who can't even protect his friends.

Screw being an assassin. This is my last mission. I'll be known as a traitor, so I won't be able to live in normal society ever again.

However, I'll be able to keep the smiles of my friends.

We'll finally be able to live out of this assassin business.

I hate it.

A small smile appears on my face, and I whisper. "We can live in peace."

I promise to make a better life for everyone.

*BANG*

...

...

...

...

...

*boof*

I fall on the floor as I start to feel a sharp pain in my head.

Huh?

What is going on?

Why is everything blurry?

*step*

*step*

*step*

I see the feet of someone walking toward me.

Crouching down, I recognize him.

...

Toji.

...

He spoke. "Sei Asaki, huh? I finally got my source. I knew a rat existed but didn't think it would be you. You're the reason why people were sent to kill us. It wasn't a bad plan, but you tried it on the wrong person."

Damn, I can't get a word out.

He continued. "Sorry, kid, but I'll take care of that Sei guy."

Then, he stood up and started walking away.

...

Everything went dark.
