Emma's eyes adjusted to the dim light of the subway tunnel. Jack pulled her through the crowded platform, his grip on her hand tightening.
As they reached the edge of the platform, Jack leapt onto the tracks, pulling Emma down beside him. They sprinted through the darkness, the roar of the trains deafening.
Suddenly, Jack stopped, his head cocked to one side. Emma listened, her heart pounding. Footsteps echoed through the tunnel, growing louder.
Jack pulled her into a small alcove, his body pressed against hers. The footsteps passed mere inches from their hiding spot.
As they waited, Emma's mind raced. Who were these people? And why were they so desperate to catch Jack?
When the coast was clear, Jack pulled her out of the alcove. "We need to keep moving," he whispered.
They emerged into the bright sunlight, gasping for air. Emma's eyes scanned the crowded streets, her heart still racing.
But as they disappeared into the throng, Emma realized she had no idea where they were going. Or what lay ahead.
