Chapter 3 - blood lust

A gloomy day shrouded Minneapolis in an eerie atmosphere. The historic East Street theater was now a crime scene. Police tape cordoned off the entrance, and investigators bustled about, their cameras and equipment at the ready.

Inside, two bodies lay motionless on the floor, their faces pale. Dr. Lee knelt beside them, his eyes fixed on the puncture wounds in their necks. "Fang-like teeth," he murmured. "We're dealing with something sinister here."

News of the gruesome discovery spread rapidly, igniting a frenzy of speculation and fear. The police scrambled to piece together the evidence, but the crime's bizarre nature left them stumped.

As the investigation unfolded, a sense of unease settled over Minneapolis, its residents gripped by the unshakable feeling that a sinister presence lurked in the darkness.

Lukas, the leader of the Minneapolis vampire clan, addressed his clan, his eyes blazing with intensity. 'We've been betrayed. Humans have been attacked, and our secrecy is at risk. Who among us has broken the law?'"

"I thought we had agreement on the humans, Lukas," one vampire spoke up, her voice laced with concern. "Why would anyone risk exposure?"

"Silence, Katerina!" Lukas's gaze narrowed. "I'll not be swayed by excuses. The law is clear: humans are off-limits. Whoever has broken this law will face consequences."

The vampires exchanged nervous glances, their faces pale and drawn. Some fidgeted, while others stood tall, defying suspicion.

The hall fell silent, the only sound the heavy breathing of the vampires. Lukas's words hung in the air, a warning and a promise. The meeting had only just begun, but the tension was palpable.

Lukas's gaze narrowed, his voice growing stern. "You know the rules! You know the consequences of feeding on humans! Yet, one of you has chosen to disregard everything we stand for, everything I've built and protected!"

He stopped in front of Kael, his gaze piercing. "You're always pushing boundaries, Kael. Is this your doing?" Kael shook his head, his eyes wide with fear. "No, Lukas, I swear it wasn't me."

Lukas's gaze lingered, then moved on to Astrid. "And you, Astrid? You've been acting strangely. Is this your handiwork?" Astrid trembled, her voice barely audible. "N-no, Lukas, I wouldn't dare."

Lukas's expression darkened further. "I'll find out who's responsible," he growled, his voice low and menacing. "And when I do, they'll face the ultimate punishment." He paused, his eyes blazing with intensity. "Death by my own hand."

The hall fell silent, the vampires frozen in fear. Lukas's wrath was palpable, and they knew he would stop at nothing to maintain order and protect their secret existence.

"Leave!" Lukas's voice boomed, his eyes flashing with fierce intensity. "I will find the traitor, and I will deal with them myself. No one risks our existence without facing my wrath!"

The vampires hastened to obey, their footsteps echoing through the grand hall as they fled from their leader's wrath. The doors slammed shut behind them, leaving Lukas alone in the darkness, his mind seething with anger and betrayal.

Only Sabine, Lukas's second-in-command, remained, her expression unreadable in the shadows. "Lukas, perhaps we should investigate further before jumping to conclusions," she ventured, her voice cautious.

Lukas's gaze narrowed, his eyes flashing a warning. "Do not question my judgment, Sabine. I know what I saw, and I will ensure the responsible party pays the price."

Sabine's gaze never wavered, but her voice took on a soothing quality. "There's a young witch among humans, unaware of her true nature." Her words piqued Lukas's interest, his anger momentarily forgotten. "A witch, living among humans, unaware of her powers?"

Sabine nodded, her eyes gleaming with excitement. "Yes, Lukas. I've been observing her. Her magic is raw, untapped, but potent. And she's different, this one."

Lukas's mind raced with the implications. "Tell me more," he commanded, his voice low and urgent. "What's her name? Where can I find her?"

Sabine's smile hinted at secrets kept. "Her name is Josephine, Lukas".  And I think you'll find her... intriguing." "I think she has the spellbound curse ," Sabine added. Lukas's smirk grew wider. "To be sure, let's monitor her till her 20th birthday."

In a secluded chamber of the grand hall, Kael and Astrid stood facing each other, their disagreement palpable. Kael's eyes widened in desperation, his voice cracking as he pleaded. "Astrid, please understand! The thirst overwhelmed me. I couldn't resist. They were so vulnerable, so unsuspecting."

Astrid's expression remained unyielding, her voice firm but laced with disappointment. "That's no excuse, Kael. You know the law. You know the consequences of feeding on humans. Yet, you chose to ignore it."

Kael's trembles intensified, his eyes welling up with tears. "I know, Astrid. I made a mistake. Please, have mercy. Don't tell Lukas. He'll kill me."

Astrid disagreed with Kael, her expression unyielding.

"You threw away our hard work, our future plans. You chose to break the law".

Kael's desperation turned to despair. "Please, Astrid, I love you. Don't do this. Okay fine! Talk to Lukas, convince him to spare me."

Astrid remained loyal to Lukas, her voice firm.

"I'll speak to Lukas, Kael. But I can't promise anything. You must face the consequences of your actions".

Astrid hastened to Lukas's chambers, her heart beating in her chest. She couldn't delay any longer; she had to reveal Kael's secret before it was too late. Meanwhile, Kael knew Astrid would tell on him, despite their relationship. He knew she stood for what was right, even if it meant condemning him. With a snarl, Kael pounced on a pedestrian, feeding with a ferocity he had never known before.

As Astrid burst into Lukas's room, her face pale and eyes wide with urgency, Lukas's gaze shifted from Sabine to her. "What is it, Astrid? Can't you see I'm busy?" Astrid took a deep breath, her words spilling out in a rush. "Kael's gone rogue, Lukas. He's feeding on humans, killing them." Lukas's expression darkened, eyes flashing with anger. "That fool! I'll deal with him myself."

Lukas turned to Sabine, his voice curt. "Find out more about the witch. I need to know everything. Now." Sabine nodded, eyes gleaming with understanding. Lukas turned to Astrid, his voice firm. "Show me where Kael is. Now." Astrid nodded, leading Lukas out of the room, followed by two vampires, their faces grim and eyes blazing with intensity.

Lukas's mind raced with thoughts of Kael's betrayal as he searched the dark alleys, his senses on high alert. His anger and frustration grew with every passing moment until he finally spotted Kael lurking in the shadows. Kael's eyes gleamed with malevolent intensity as he fed on another human, his face twisted in a snarl.

Lukas strode forward, his eyes fixed on Kael with fierce determination. "Kael, it's over. You've gone too far." Kael's gaze locked onto Lukas with defiance, his grip on the human unyielding. "Mind your own business, Lukas. This doesn't concern you."

Lukas's eyes flashed with fury, his fangs bared in a snarl. "You're a disgrace to our kind, Kael. A monster. And I'm going to stop you." Kael's eyes blazed with intensity as he spat out the words, his voice dripping with venom. "Your leadership has been a tear in my flesh, Lukas. You've fed us animals for years, making us crave humans. Humans are the ultimate prey."

Astrid's eyes flashed with anger as she stepped forward. 'Kael, how could you be so reckless? You know the law!'

Lukas's expression turned cold, his voice stern. 'Enough, Astrid. Kael's betrayal is clear. He must face the consequences.'

Astrid's gaze lingered on Kael, her expression softening. 'But Lukas, perhaps we should hear him out?"

He turned to Astrid, his gaze gleaming with persuasion. "Think of the strength you could gain, Astrid, when you taste a human. Join me, and together we can experience our kind's true power."

Astrid's face twisted in disgust, her eyes flashing with defiance. "I'd rather die than join you, Kael," she spat out, her voice firm. "You're a monster  to our kind."

Kael's face darkened, his eyes narrowing. "You're a fool, Astrid," he snarled. "I'll show you what it means to be a true vampire."

With a fierce cry, Kael launched himself at Lukas, fangs bared and eyes blazing. The two vampires clashed, their snarls and growls echoing through the night.

Lukas struck back, his fangs sinking deep into Kael's neck. Kael's eyes widened in shock, his mouth opening in a silent scream. Lukas drained the life from his body, Kael's heart beating slowly until he collapsed, limp and lifeless.

Lukas stood over him, chest heaving, eyes blazing with intensity. "It's done," Lukas growled, his voice dripping with anger and sadness. "You chose to embrace the monster within, Kael. Now you've paid the price."

Astrid approached, her eyes wide with shock and horror. "Lukas, what have you done?" she whispered, her voice trembling.

Lukas turned to her, his eyes cold and hard. "I did what needed to be done, Astrid. Kael threatened our kind, and I had to stop him. As leader, it's my duty to protect our people, no matter the cost."

The silence that followed was deafening, the only sound the heavy breathing of the vampires as they gazed upon Kael's lifeless body, the monster who had brought about his own demise.

Sabine watched Josephine from afar, noticing her sparkling eyes and loose waves of hair. She saw a faint glow of uncontrolled magic surrounding Josephine, like a halo of power."

Questions raced through Sabine's mind, How could Josephine be unaware of her abilities? What kind of witch didn't know they were a witch? And what was the source of her growing power? Determined to uncover the truth, Sabine continued her surveillance, lurking in shadows and waiting for the perfect moment to approach Josephine.

Dr. Lee's eyes widened as he gazed at the latest autopsy report, his mind racing with the implications. The bite marks on the victims' necks were unlike anything he had ever seen before - precise, calculated, and eerily similar. Just as he reached for the phone to dial the police department, a chill ran down his spine. He felt a presence behind him, and before he could turn around, Lukas's hand clamped over his mouth, silencing his scream.

Lukas's eyes gleamed in the dim light of the morgue, his fangs bared as he leaned in close. "You shouldn't have meddled in things you don't understand, Doctor," he whispered, his voice dripping with menace.

Dr. Lee struggled against the vampire's grip, but it was too late. Lukas's fangs sank deep into his neck, and the doctor's life slipped away, his secrets dying with him.

The phone slipped from his hand, the call to the police department never made. Lukas's eyes gleamed with calculating intensity as he gazed at Dr. Lee's lifeless body. He knew the doctor's discovery could be a liability, and he couldn't risk anyone else uncovering the truth.

Lukas carried Dr. Lee's body to a hidden chamber beneath the city streets, where ancient artifacts whispered secrets to the darkness. With precise fingers, he wove a magic pattern, unraveling reality's fabric. The body dissolved, its molecular structure disintegrating into nothingness. In moments, Dr. Lee was reduced to a faint memory, leaving no trace.

Lukas returned to his clan, his eyes gleaming with accomplishment. "It's done," he announced, his voice low and even. "Kael's mistake is cleaned up, and the doctor's discovery will remain buried."

The clan gathered around him, concerned. "What about humans?" one asked. Lukas's gaze swept over them, his eyes burning with intensity. "We will not feed on humans again. Our survival depends on secrecy, and I will not risk our kind." The clan nodded, pale but determined. They knew Lukas's wrath and would not cross him again.

"Let us hunt elsewhere," Lukas continued, his voice softening. "The forest is full of game, and our bellies will be satisfied without risking our existence. We are vampires, but not monsters. Let us not forget our honor." The clan dispersed, their footsteps echoing through the darkness.

Lukas knew the threat was far from over, but his clan was safe for now. He narrowed his eyes, his mind turning to the next potential threat. "I'll have to settle things with the Extraordinaries," he thought. "It's only a matter of time before they come knocking." He began making plans, his mind racing with strategies and alliances. He would need to secure support from other vampire clans and perhaps reach out to powerful supernatural creatures.
