Chapter 8 - into the woods

Josephine whispered, "Guys, I'm really spooked. That janitor won't stop staring at me." She nervously unwrapped her lunch, her eyes darting around the cafeteria.

"What's wrong, Jo?" Emily asked, concern etched on her face.

"That janitor," Josephine replied, her voice trembling. "He's been watching me all day. And I overheard him talking to...someone. About me."

Cleopatra raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?"

Josephine hesitated, her eyes welling up with tears. "I don't know how to explain it. It was like they were discussing some kind of plan. And the god was warning him about me."

Risa frowned. "A plan? What kind of plan?"

Josephine shook her head. "I don't know. But they were talking about me like I'm some kind of threat."

Emily reached out and took Josephine's hand. "Hey, we're here for you, Jo. We won't let anything happen to you."

Cleopatra nodded. "We'll get to the bottom of this. How did he even know you were listening in?"

Josephine shook her head. "I have no idea. But he seemed to sense it, like he had a sixth sense or something."

Risa's eyes narrowed. "We need to keep an eye on him. See if we can uncover what he's up to."

Cleopatra agreed. "And we'll make sure you're safe, no matter what."

Martha burst into the cafeteria, her voice laced with malice. "Come on, admit it! There's something bizarre going on between you four!"

Cleopatra's eyes narrowed. "What are you talking about, Martha?"

Martha sneered. "You used Allison for your own purposes, and now you're clinging to each other like lifelines. It's like you're all in some kind of twisted symbiotic relationship."

Emily's eyes flashed with anger. "That's not true, Martha. We're just friends trying to navigate this crazy world."

Martha's gaze pierced through Josephine. "Allison is better off without you and your fake, manipulative ways. You used her for your own gain, and then discarded her like trash."

Josephine's eyes welled up with tears as she fled the cafeteria. But her escape was short-lived, as the janitor seized her and dragged her into the lab.

"You're coming with me, Josephine," he growled, his hand grasping her neck with an unyielding intensity.

Josephine struggled to break free, but his hold was unrelenting. "Let me go!" she screamed, but her voice was silenced by his magic.

The janitor's chanting grew louder, his words weaving a dark spell that wrapped around Josephine like a shroud. But she refused to give in, unleashing a mighty cry as her body surged with a powerful, unbridled magic.

The force of her spell exploded outward, striking the janitor with incredible force and sending him crashing across the room. "You won't defeat me!" Josephine declared, her eyes blazing with an intense blue light.

Emily, Cleopatra, and Risa burst into the lab, their eyes scanning the room frantically. "Josephine!" Emily exclaimed, rushing to her side.

"Guys, I'm okay," Josephine replied, her voice shaking. "I think I just... unleashed some kind of magic."

Cleopatra's eyes widened. "What kind of magic?"

Josephine hesitated. "I don't know. But it felt powerful."

Risa nodded. "We need to get you out of here. Now."

As they guided Josephine out of the lab, Risa dashed off to procure a special permit from Principal Heatherway. "We need to get her out of here, Principal," Risa urged.

Heatherway hesitated, then nodded. "Very well. But be careful, Risa. Whatever is going on, it seems dangerous."

Meanwhile, Jaden, Tyler, and Allison huddled together, concerned about Josephine's sudden change in behavior. "I can't get close to her," Jaden said, frustration etched on his face. "Those girls showed up, and suddenly she's a different person."

Allison's eyes mirrored Jaden's sadness. "I feel your pain, Jaden. I've lost my best friend too."

Tyler's curiosity was piqued. "We should investigate those girls. There's something strange about them."

Allison nodded. "I'll ask Martha about them. See if she knows anything."

As Allison approached Martha, she asked, "Hey, Martha. What's going on with Emily, Cleopatra, and Risa? You said they were your friends at Josephine's party, but now you're acting like you don't know them."

Martha's expression faltered for a moment before she recovered with a shrug. "I don't remember saying that, Allison. I met those girls on the street, and I don't recall anything about that night."

Allison's eyes narrowed. "I'm positive they said that. And now Josephine's acting all strange... something's going on, Martha, and I'm going to get to the bottom of it."

Allison returned to her friends, her expression thoughtful. "Guys, Martha's hiding something. She was evasive when I asked about Emily, Cleopatra, and Risa."

Tyler's eyes widened. "You think she's involved in whatever's going on with Josephine?"

Allison nodded. "I do. We need to dig deeper."

Jaden's face set in determination. "Let's research connections between Martha, those girls, and Josephine."

Tyler pulled out his phone. "I'll search online. See if anything pops up."

Allison's eyes sparkled with determination. "I'll get more information from Martha. Maybe we can catch her in a lie."

Jaden nodded. "Let's get to the bottom of this. We need to save Josephine."

Tyler exclaimed, "What kind of teenagers don't have social media? There's nothing about those girls online!"

Allison stood up. "Jaden, try getting close to Josephine. Tyler, keep researching. I'll dig into Martha's claim."

The three friends nodded, determined to uncover the truth.

As Emily, Risa, Cleopatra, and Josephine walked home, a sleek Lamborghini pulled up alongside them. Lukas and two vampires emerged, their movements fluid and graceful.

"Well, well, well. Look what we have here," Lukas said, his eyes fixed on Josephine. "If it's not the most powerful young witch".

Risa stepped forward, her voice firm. "Josephine, get behind me."

Lukas raised an eyebrow. "Oh relax, I mean no harm ladies"

Emily's eyes narrowed. "We know you want Josephine for your own selfish interests, Lukas. Don't play smart with us."

Lukas smiled. "Perhaps you should let her decide for herself. Josephine, come with me and you'll have the loyalty of my clan. You don't want to be stuck with these...children."

Josephine hesitated, and Lukas took another step closer. "Don't listen to him, Josephine," Emily warned.

As Lukas took another step closer, Emily grabbed her friends and uttered a magical phrase: "Do Eskelto!" The four girls vanished into thin air, leaving Lukas and his companions staring at the empty space.

In Emily's living room, the girls reappeared, the familiar surroundings a stark contrast to the danger they had just escaped. But Emily's expression turned grave, her eyes fixed on cleopatra "We need to take Josephine to Arianna, now. We can't waste any more time."

Cleopatra's eyes widened in concern. "Emily, wait! Are you sure Josephine is ready for this?"

Emily face set in determination. "We don't have a choice. Lukas won't stop until he gets what he wants."

But Emily's urgency only seemed to anger cleopatra. She stormed out of the room. Josephine followed her, concern etched on her face. "Cleo, what's wrong?"

Cleopatra stood on the balcony, her eyes fixed on the horizon. "Emily's rushing things, are you even ready Jo?"

" I'm ready Cleo for real".Josephine placed a gentle hand on her arm. "What's the meaning of 'Do Eskelto', Cleo?" Josephine asked trying to change the topic

Cleopatra's expression softened, her eyes turning Josephine. "It's a spell that transports us to our safe haven - Emily's home. You say the phrase when you're in danger and need a quick escape."

Just then, a black bird flew in, dropping a letter at Cleopatra's feet. She picked it up, her eyes scanning its contents. "You've been summoned by Arachne, the grand witch. We need to leave now."

Without another word, Cleopatra took Josephine's hand, leading her back into the house.

"We need to leave, Arachne's after Josephine now" cleopatra said to Emily

Emily and Risa prepared, their faces set with determination. They packed their things quickly, their movements swift and efficient. And with a final glance at the familiar surroundings, they vanished into thin air, leaving the apartment empty and silent once more.
