Chapter 4 - the birthday surprise

September 20th marked Josephine's 20th birthday. Mr. Gordito entered her room, a small cake with lit candles in hand, his face beaming with a warm smile. "Surprise! Happy birthday, mi amor!" he exclaimed, his eyes shining with love and adoration.

Josephine's eyes fluttered open, and a sleepy smile spread across her face as she took in the sight of her father holding a cake with candles lit. "Oh, Daddy!" she squealed, throwing her arms around his neck. "Thank you, muah!" she said, her eyes sparkling with joy.

Mr. Gordito's heart swelled with happiness as he hugged his daughter tight, feeling grateful for this special moment they shared. "Happy birthday, my little one," he whispered, his voice filled with love. Aretha, her cat, cuddled up beside them, sharing in the joy.

As they hugged, the flickering candles cast a warm glow on their faces, making the moment special. Josephine's 20th birthday was a wake-up call, reminding her of the void in her life.

School activities distracted her from the nagging sense of incompleteness. She needed answers, and she needed them now. Nightmares intensified, with dark visions and eerie feelings of being watched. At the center was her mother's disappearance - no body, no burial, just a cryptic explanation from her father.

Josephine couldn't turn to him for answers, as his addiction and trauma left him fragile. She scoured the internet for clues, searching old news articles, police reports, and social media. Then, she found a lead - a witness who had come forward years ago but later recanted.

Josephine's eyes were glued to the screen, her mind racing with possibilities as she scrolled through the contact information. She was so close, she could feel it.

But just as she was about to click on a promising link, her phone buzzed, shattering the silence. She sighed, hesitating for a moment before answering, her eyes rolling in frustration. "Hey, Allison."

Allison's cheerful voice echoed through the line, a stark contrast to Josephine's intense focus. "Hey, girl! Happy birthday! I can't believe you're spending it holed up in your room."

Josephine forced a laugh, trying to play along. "Just doing some research, Allison. You know me, always on the case."

Allison's laughter came through the line. "Research, huh? Sounds like a birthday party to me! But hey, I gotta run. I'll come over later and bring your birthday gift. It's something you'll love, I promise!"

Josephine's curiosity was piqued, and she felt a spark of excitement. "What is it?" she asked, her mind momentarily distracted from her search for answers.

Allison's laughter came through the line again. "You'll just have to wait and see! But trust me, it's worth the wait."

Josephine smiled, feeling a sense of gratitude towards her friend. "Thanks, Allison. I can't wait to see you later."

As they said their goodbyes and hung up, Josephine couldn't help but wonder what Allison's gift could be.

She had been so focused on her search for answers that she hadn't even thought about celebrating her birthday.

But with Allison's promise to come over later, Josephine felt a sense of excitement and anticipation that she hadn't felt in a long time. She went back to her research, but her mind kept wandering back to the mystery of Allison's gift.

But she refocused on the contact information on her screen, her heart racing as she dialed the witness's number. The phone rang, and she felt a mix of excitement and trepidation. "Hello?" a cautious voice answered.

"Hi, is this Janeta?" Josephine asked, her voice steady. "Yes, that's me.

Who is this?" Janeta replied, her tone wary. Josephine took a deep breath. "I'm Josephine, the daughter of the woman who disappeared all those years ago. I saw your statement in the article, and I need to know what you saw." A pause followed, and Josephine's grip on the phone tightened.

"Okay, Josephine. I'll tell you what I saw. But promise me you'll be careful. What I saw that night... it was not of this world."

Josephine's heart skipped a beat. "I promise, Janeta. I'll be careful. Please, tell me what you saw."

Janeta's words were slow and deliberate, painting a chilling picture. "I saw a figure, tall and imposing, with eyes that glowed like embers. It was standing over your mother's car, watching me. I knew I had to escape, fast."

Josephine's mind raced with the implications. She leaned in, her ears glued to the phone, as Janeta described the figure's unsettling presence.

"Thank you, Janeta," Josephine said, her voice filled with gratitude. "Thank you for telling me the truth." As she hung up the phone, Josephine knew her journey was far from over. She had uncovered a small piece of the puzzle, but there was still much more to discover.

Josephine's mind was reeling with the thou no ghts of the tall figure standing over her mother's car, its glowing eyes watching her. The image, revealed by Janeta's testimony, sparked a mix of emotions and questions.

As she thought about it, her eyes scanned her room, and she found an old photograph of her mom. Tears filled her eyes as she gazed at the familiar smile and warm expression. She started to tear up, overwhelmed by the mix of sadness and determination.

Her eyes locked onto the necklace her mom was wearing in the photo - a delicate piece with a glowing gemstone that seemed to shimmer in the light. That's all she noticed, just the necklace, but it was enough to make her feel a connection to her mom and strengthen her resolve to find answers.

Josephine's phone rang, breaking the silence of the house. She hesitated, wondering who it could be. The unfamiliar number seemed somehow familiar. "Hello?" she answered cautiously.

"Hey, Josephine! Happy birthday!" Jaden's cheerful voice came through the line.

Josephine's heart skipped a beat. "Jaden! I wasn't expecting to hear from you."

"I wanted to surprise you," Jaden said, his tone playful. "Come over to my place. I have a surprise planned for you."

Josephine's curiosity was piqued. "What is it?" she asked, her mind racing.

"It's a surprise, silly!" Jaden teased. "Just come over and see. I promise you'll have fun."

Josephine hesitated, unsure if she should go. But Jaden's enthusiasm was infectious. "Okay, fine. I'll come over," she said, a smile creeping onto her face.

"Great! See you soon!" Jaden said, hanging up.

Josephine put her phone down, her excitement building. She wondered what Jaden had in store for her. Instead of dwelling on the unknown, she focused on getting ready.

Josephine swiftly applied lip gloss, ran a brush through her hair, and grabbed her jacket. As she headed out the door, she caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror and smiled, feeling a mix of anticipation and nerves.

As Josephine walked to Jaden's place, the sun's descent cast a warm orange glow over the neighborhood. Her anticipation grew with each step.

Instead of speculating, she focused on the present moment, taking in the sights and sounds around her. She arrived at Jaden's house at 5:15 pm, noticing the dimmed lights and closed curtains. The doorbell rang, and Jaden answered with a sly grin, his eyes sparkling with excitement. "Hey, come on in," he said, stepping aside to reveal a transformed living room.

"Hey, come on in," Jaden said, his gesture inviting her into the transformed living room.

As Josephine stepped inside, her eyes adjusted to the dim light, and she heard the murmur of whispers and footsteps.

Suddenly, a loud shout of "Surprise!" filled the air. The lights flickered on, revealing a vibrant scene: balloons and streamers adorned the room, and a giant banner reading "Happy Birthday, Josephine!" in bold letters hung from the ceiling.

Josephine's jaw dropped as she took in the sight, her heart swelling with joy and gratitude. She felt overwhelmed by the thoughtful gesture, her eyes welling up with tears.

The music pulsed through the air, energizing the atmosphere. Josephine's eyes widened as she took in the vibrant scene. The living room was packed with familiar faces from school, all beaming with excitement.

Balloons and streamers added a splash of color, and the giant banner hung prominently on the wall.

As she entered, Tyler, Joshua, and Allison rushed towards her, wrapping her in a warm group hug. "Happy 20th birthday , Josephine!" they chimed in unison, their voices filled with enthusiasm. Josephine laughed, feeling overwhelmed but delighted.

She had never anticipated such a grand celebration. Jaden had gone above and beyond to make her birthday special, and it seemed like the whole school was there to share in the joy.

As Josephine navigated the lively gathering, friends and acquaintances offered warm birthday wishes, some presenting her with thoughtful gifts or cards. The music was an infectious blend of pop and hip-hop, prompting people to move to the rhythm and sing along with enthusiasm.

Josephine's heart overflowed with appreciation for Jaden, whose beaming smile and shining eyes reflected his joy and pride.

Allison's smile illuminated her face as she carefully placed the exquisite cake in front of Josephine. The cake's intricate designs and colors seemed to shift and shimmer in the light, like a work of art. As the sweet aroma of vanilla and chocolate filled the air,

Josephine's eyes widened in wonder. "Wow, Allison, this is stunning!" she exclaimed.

"Happy birthday, Josephine!" Allison exclaimed, her voice filled with excitement. "I hope your wish comes true!"

"Thanks, Allison," Josephine replied, her gaze fixed on the cake. "This is amazing."

"I'm so sorry I didn't come by earlier with a gift," Allison said, her eyes apologetic. "This cake was supposed to be my present to you, but Jaden's plan was just too perfect. I couldn't resist going along with it."

Josephine smiled, her mind racing with anticipation. "It's okay, Allison. This is more than enough. I love it."

As she leaned in to blow out the candles, Allison added, "And I love how it all worked out. Jaden's plan was way better than anything I could have come up with."

Just as Josephine was about to make her wish, the door creaked open. Three girls slipped in, their faces obscured by the shadows. The music and laughter continued, but the atmosphere shifted, like a collective holding of breath. Josephine's eyes locked onto the trio, her curiosity piqued by their enigmatic presence.

She felt an inexplicable connection to them, as if they shared a secret language or a hidden bond.

Her mind raced with questions: Who were they? What brought them to this celebration? Why did she feel so drawn to them, like they were kindred spirits?

But before she could ponder further, Tyler's enthusiastic voice broke the spell, shattering the mystique of the moment. "Hey, Jo!! Time to cut the cake!" He gestured to the majestic dessert, adorned with candles and decorations, his eyes shining with excitement.

Josephine's gaze lingered on the mysterious girls, her smile faltering as she tried to process the unexpected encounter. Her heart still raced, her mind reeling with questions.

With a deep breath, she turned to face the cake, the sweet aroma filling her senses. The flickering candles cast a warm glow on her face, but her attention remained split, her peripheral vision fixed on the girls.

Their eyes remained locked on hers, their intensity making her skin prickle. She felt a sense of anticipation building, like they were waiting for her next move.

She leaned in to blow out the candles. "Make a wish, Jo!" Tyler's voice broke the silence, but her mind was already racing ahead, wondering what the girls wanted.

As the candles flickered out, Allison's gaze snapped to the mysterious girls, her expression mirroring Josephine's initial unease.

"Psst, Jo, check them out," Allison whispered, her voice laced with disdain. "They're totally bizarre. And what's with their getup? It's like they rummaged through a vintage store and put together a mismatched puzzle."

Josephine's eyes remained fixed on the trio, her curiosity piqued. "Yeah, they're definitely... unusual," she agreed, her tone measured. "I think I'll go see what's up with them. Martha seems to know them, and I'm intrigued."

Allison's eyes widened in disbelief. "You're going to talk to them? Are you sure that's a good idea?" Josephine nodded, her mind already made up. "Yeah, I need to know what's going on here."

Allison's eyebrow shot up in concern. "You're really going to talk to them? They're giving me some serious creepy vibes."

Josephine shrugged, her curiosity getting the better of her. "I'll be fine. I want to know what their deal is."

As she spoke, the three girls moved in tandem, their synchronized steps sending a shiver down Josephine's spine. She stood her ground, her heart racing with anticipation.

"This is freaking me out," Allison whispered, her eyes fixed on the approaching girls with a mixture of suspicion and disdain.

The three girls surrounded Josephine, their movements eerily choreographed. "Happy birthday," they chimed in unison, their voices low and hypnotic. Josephine's skin crawled as their eyes locked onto hers.

Allison's suspicion was palpable as she asked, "How did you guys know about the party?"

Emily's response was laced with sweetness, "Martha invited us! She said it was a special day for Josephine and we had to come celebrate."

Emily, with her bright smile and curly blonde hair, stepped forward first. 'Hey, I'm Emily! I love your party, it's amazing!' She extended her hand, and Josephine shook it, feeling a warmth and genuineness that put her at ease.

Next, Risa introduced herself, her soft voice and piercing green eyes making a striking impression. Her dark hair framed her delicate features, and her petite frame seemed to radiate a quiet intensity.

Finally, Cleopatra stepped forward, her confidence and poise commanding attention. Her dark hair cascaded down her back, and her sharp jawline accentuated her piercing brown eyes. 'And I'm Cleopatra,' she said.

Josephine's mind raced with questions, why were they invited if she'd never seen them at school?

But before she could ask, Cleopatra's Condescending tone cut through the music, 'You're more naive than I thought, Gordito.' Josephine's eyes narrowed, sensing a jab she couldn't quite grasp.

Before she could respond, Emily jumped in, her voice bright and cheerful, 'Nice party, by the way! I love the decorations! Who planned all this?'

The sudden shift in tone was jarring, and Josephine's eyes darted between the two, trying to read the tension. 'Uh, thanks, I think Martha did the decorations...' she trailed off, her attention caught by Cleopatra's piercing gaze, which seemed to hold a secret message."

Just as the tension built Jaden appeared, his charming smile and effortless charm dissipating the unease. "Hey, Josephine, want to dance with me?" he asked, his eyes sparkling with a mischievous glint.

Josephine's heart skipped a beat as she hesitated, her eyes darting to the girls, who watched with interest. But then, she smiled and nodded, her decision made.

As Jaden led Josephine away from the party, the music and laughter faded into the distance, replaced by the thrill of excitement mixed with a hint of trepidation.

The creak of the door opening broke the silence, and Josephine's heart skipped a beat as Jaden gestured for her to enter his bedroom. She hesitated, her mind racing with questions.

But Jaden's gentle smile reassured her, and she stepped inside, her eyes adjusting to the dim light. The soft hum of music from a nearby speaker filled the room, and Jaden took her hand, their bodies swaying to the slow melody.

The music enveloped them, creating a sensual and intimate atmosphere that made Josephine feel like she was melting into Jaden's embrace.

As they danced, the world outside melted away, leaving only the two of them, lost in the rhythm and each other's eyes. Their bodies moved in perfect harmony, communicating a language that transcended words.

The music faded, and they drifted to the rooftop, the night air enveloping them with its cool, crisp embrace. At the edge, they gazed up at the moon, its silvery light casting a spell of wonder over the city. The world stretched out before them like an unfurled canvas, promising endless possibilities.

In that moment, Josephine felt like she was soaring, with Jaden as her anchor. The connection between them pulsed like an invisible thread, strengthening with every shared breath.

Josephine's gaze lingered on the girls as they vanished into the darkness. A shiver ran down her spine, her instincts screaming that something was off. "Jaden, I'll be right back, let me grab some drinks," she said, her voice laced with a false nonchalance.

She dashed down from the rooftop, her heart beating, and she tailed the girls from a distance. Their shadowy figures disappeared behind a car and into a dark alley.

Josephine hesitated, her mind wrestling with caution and curiosity. But her need for answers won out, drawing her into the alley like a magnet.

She crept forward, her ears straining to decipher the hushed whispers and muffled arguments. The air was thick with tension, and Josephine's every sense screamed that she was onto something sinister.

Josephine's eyes widened as she stumbled upon a dark and sinister scene. The girls were witches, and they were confronting a vampire, their magic perceptible in the air, and Josephine's heart raced as she realized they were discussing her.

Emily's voice was firm and commanding, "Tell your leader that the witch is ours! She belongs to us."

Sabine's eyes flashed with defiance, "She's too powerful to be yours. Lukas won't be interested in your petty games."

Risa's eyes blazed with anger, summoning a burst of magic that sent Sabine crashing into a nearby dumpster.

The vampire's eyes fluttered open, her fangs bared. "You'll pay for that, witch!"

Emily stepped forward, her voice cold and menacing, "Josephine would never be your witch to feed on! Is Lukas not tired of breaking the laws?! Does he want to cause a war?"

Risa's voice was equally fierce, "Tell Lukas to keep his dirty fangs off Josephine!"

Josephine's heart raced as she accidentally kicked a can of beer, the metallic clatter echoing through the alley.

The witches' eyes flicked towards her, their attention momentarily diverted. She ducked behind a nearby dumpster, holding her breath, hoping to remain unnoticed.

As the witches began to search for their observer, Josephine made a swift escape with her heart racing with fear.

Without a glance back, she burst through the party entrance, her eyes frantically scanning the crowded room for a safe haven. She spotted Allison, lost in the music and laughter, unaware of the danger that lurked outside. Josephine pushed through the throng, her urgency noticeable.

"We need to leave. Now," she whispered, her gaze darting around the room, expecting the witches to appear at any moment.

Allison's confusion was evident, but Josephine's intensity convinced her to follow her without question. Together, they hastened towards the exit, leaving behind the party and the ominous threat that lingered outside.
