Chapter 4 - Chapter 3 : Creatures behind the dark forest

"Damn it!"

Jeane folded her arms in front of her chest while looking lazily at the behavior of her brother who was kicking the car tires.

"Would you rather hurt your own leg, or change the tire immediately so we won't be late?"

"Fucking morning!" As usual, Lucas, with his thin patience, had to bother cursing in the morning.

Jeane chuckled. It's better not to complain about Lucas' cursing, because scolding someone who has just broken up is the same as talking to herself. She also checked her cellphone to check the time and also the schedule for her first lecture today.

"Don't let me be late on my first day." She put the flat object back into the tote bag then looked at Lucas who was starting to change the tire while still grumbling.

The morning of the first day was quite annoying for Jeane. The tire suddenly leaked on a road that had dense forest on either side. The location is not so far from home so people rarely pass by. The area around her house is very quiet, because it is on the outskirts of a city full of forests. Frankly, it's a bit scary if she keep observing it even though it's still early in the morning.

For a few moments surrounded by silence, suddenly her hearing accidentally picked up a soft growling sound. Not too loud, but enough to shock the heart. Jeane turned her head then turned her body towards the bushes right behind her.

Her brow furrowed as she tried to peer into the forest inside through the tall grass. Jeane then thought that maybe her ears were wrong, but then the voice came back clearly.

"Lucas?"

"What?"

"Did you hear a sound?" For a moment, Jeane turned to Lucas.

Lucas stopped what he was doing for a moment and pretended to be listening to something. "I heard... the sound of my breathing," he said carelessly then went back to continuing repairs.

Tsk, damn Lucas. Jeane felt like she wanted to throw a shoe at that person. She dared to approach the bushes and then slightly parted the leaves of the grass which was quite tall.

"Oh, Jesus Christ." Jeane was stunned.

The sight seen now was so strange. Even though the sky today was very bright because it was still summer, when Jeane looked into the forest it seemed like it was nighttime because of the dense leaves on the big trees. Plus there was fog enveloping it, making the atmosphere feel scary.

To make sure the sky wasn't cloudy, Jeane looked up. It wasn't cloudy, in fact there were only a few clouds. Then she looked back into the forest where there was very little light. In that instant, her heart seemed to want to let go when he suddenly saw a pair of bright yellow eyes staring at her. Not only that, there are also canine teeth and a head shape like a large dog with dark fur that appears from the mist.

Along with the appearance, the voice was heard again. Jeane quickly pulled her body away from the bushes and ran into the car without paying attention to Lucas who wasn't finished with the repairs.

"Hey! Why are you already in the car? I'm not finished yet." Lucas protested.

Jeane was still staring at the bushes from inside the car, hoping that the entity wouldn't give chase. Her breath came out roughly as her heart raced fast due to fear. Jeane closed her eyes for a moment while swallowing hard, calming down the shock before finally taking a deep breath.

What creature is that? Her timid soul wondered.

"What happened to you?" Lucas asked, looking confused after he finished installing all the bolts on the new car tires.

"Are you finished?" The scared face was so obvious. Jeane begged her younger brother to quickly continue to go.

"Yeah." Finally Lucas got into the car and started the engine. The car then left the location.

"Why is the forest so strange?" Jeane asked after feeling relieved enough to leave the place earlier.

"Why?" Lucas turned around for a moment.

"It's still morning and the sky is clear. But when I looked behind the bushes, the forest was so dark... like night. There really is very little light coming in." Her mind re-imagined the forest situation and was again given goosebumps by the appearance of this mysterious creature.

"What are you looking into the forest for?"

"I heard a strange sound. When I checked behind the bushes, I saw a creature with yellow eyes and sharp teeth. It looks like a dog but is very big and scary." Jeane told the story passionately so that her brother would believe what she had just seen.

A moment of silence. Lucas put on a confused face, occasionally turning to look at Jeane, whose expression was really serious and mixed with fear because she was remembering what she had seen earlier. Then not long after, the young man laughed loudly.

"Pftt... hahaha."

Jeane's brow furrowed in disappointment. "Why are you even laughing? This is not a joke!"

"Could it be that it's a werewolf looking for its mate and it turns out you're the mate, hahaha." Lucas' laughter grew louder. His joke managed to make Jeane's hand fly to the back of his head.

"Hey, what are you doing! I only have one head, don't hurt it."

"Your joke really isn't funny, Lucy. There is no such creature in this world." Shaking off her fear, Jeane folded her arms in front of her chest and turned forward.

"Don't take it as a joke. In Europe, the myth about the werewolf is still a mystery. You know, most of the land in Europe consists of forests. Who knew if the deepest forests existed such creatures? You don't know."

For Jeane, there is no creature called a werewolf. Reality was so busy that it was impossible for her to think about myths. She laughed in disbelief as she watched the street which was starting to become busy with vehicles and was surrounded by buildings, unlike before which was still a jungle.

"It makes no sense to me."

"You said it was very unreasonable? Hey, then what did you see just now?"

Jeane was silent, thinking again about what she had seen earlier and feeling doubtful about her positive thoughts. But she still didn't want to accept his Lucas's argument.

"It might indeed be a wild wolf."

"Are you sure? Let me tell you something. A normal wolf is only about 60 cm tall and weighs 25 kg. There is a wolf with the longest legs called the waned wolf and lives mostly on the American continent. There is another gray wolf which is the largest wolf species, weighing up to 45 kg. If you see a creature that resembles a wolf but can be twice as big as that. Can you still think logically? I'm not making this up, but someone said they had seen a wolf as big as a bull," explained Lucas, full of data.

Jeane turned to Lucas in disbelief and amazement. He is getting smarter after two years of education in this country. Hmm, Jeane really agrees that Finland has the best education system in the world.

"It turns out your brain has developed even more since living here." Jeane praised, not yet responding to what Lucas explained.

Hearing that, Lucas smiled confidently. "Don't mess with me now. I'm the youngest student who has taken 2 semesters."

Jeane isn't surprised because Lucas is really smart. In New York, he participated in acceleration.

Jeane snorted, too lazy to listen to boasting. "But you still believe in superstition and unproven people's words."

"I told you, don't mess with me! Usually people who often think about superstitions have much broader thoughts. Remember, this world is full of mysteries that cannot be solved by logic alone. Your brain only weighs 2 percent of your body weight, sweety."

OK, Lucas is still Lucas. Smart but still annoying. Jeane looked at him in annoyance before choosing to get busy with her thoughts again.

Yellow eyes, fangs and black fur are some of the characteristics of wolves. But normal wolf is only about 60 cm tall. Meanwhile, Jeane wasn't sure that the creature was only 60 cm tall. When she looked into that pair of eyes, it felt like she was looking at someone taller.

"Ah, it must be just a hallucination."

She didn't want to believe it, but Jeane still didn't stop thinking about it until the car arrived at the famous university where they were studying. She then got out of the car following Lucas.

If seen by other people, Lucas is more like an older brother to Jeane. His posture is tall and straight, no one would think that he is a relatively young student.

"Lucas!" call someone.

"Oh hey."

Jeane was still busy with her cellphone until she didn't realize that someone was approaching her and Lucas.

"Your new girlfriend?" asked the man while glancing at Jeane.

"No, she's my sister."

"Seriously? Have you had a sister all this time?"

"Of course, but there's no need to be shy about it. She is our junior."

Hearing that sneer, Jeane gave Lucas a sharp look before finally realizing the presence of someone who was currently standing right in front of her.

"Hi, I'm Dave Parker, Lucas' classmate."

Suddenly Jeane froze with her gaze straight at Dave's handsome eyes. Wow, what the hell is this view? This was the first time Jeane saw such beautiful emerald beads on a man's charming face. The eyelids suddenly froze, unwilling to blink at all.

"Hey."

Since earlier, Jeane was still thinking about the unknown creature she saw. Now all the shadows are a little removed. Now there was something more delicious for Jeane to imagine than that scary creature.

"Jeane, wake up. Is your brain getting stuck thinking about werewolves?" Lucas shook the girl's shoulder.

Oh, crazy. Finally, Jeane blinked her eyelids after hearing Lucas scream. She immediately smiled awkwardly in front of the man.

"Jeane Nuella, sorry."

"It's ok."

Jeane didn't expect Lucas to have a friend as handsome as this. The first impression was very good, showing friendliness and a gentle smile that pampered attention.

"Why are you thinking about werewolves?" Dave asked to breaking the awkwardness.

"She's being targeted to become Luna, hahaha," said Lucas making things up, followed by laughter. The young man apparently still wasn't satisfied teasing Jeane.

Unable to accept it, Jeane put her hands on her hips while giving her a sharp gaze. "Shut up! There is no such thing as a werewolf in this world, that creature is just fiction."

Still chuckling, Lucas didn't intend to stop talking about werewolves to his sister. "I'm sure you will be amazed after seeing what a real werewolf looks like if it really exists. It is said that their faces are really handsome, like the horse-riding prince you always dreamed of."

What other nonsense is that? It seemed like Jeane had to sell Lucas' mouth before her ears were deafened by the utter nonsense.

"I'm very concerned that you can be friends with my crazy brother. Please forgive him," Jeane said to Dave, intending to reply to Lucas's taunts.

Meanwhile, Dave knew that the two of them were just joking, he still responded in a friendly manner without adding any more jokes. "Ah no. Lucas is a genius. He is the youngest in our class."

"Never mind, let's take you to your class." Lucas pulled Jeane's hand to follow him.

"Why such a hurry?" Jeane replied disapprovingly as she followed her broter's steps towards class, whether they wanted to or not.

"I know you must be starting to like Dave."

"Ah, you're no fun."

Haha, cute siblings. Meanwhile, the man named Dave looked at the two of them leaving with a faint smile. The man seemed amazed at the girl. However, apart from that, there is actually something that is a bit interesting about its existence.

"Werewolves don't exist?"

Actually, it's okay. Humans are so unfamiliar with this.
