Chapter 14 - Skill and Ability

System has been updated, you've gained larger access to the system]

[Do you want to see what's new?]

[Yes/No]

[You've received titles].

[You've an ability from a title]

[You've received +10 stamina from a title]

"Yes," Mark answered.

The message broke into many bits and disappeared, and new messages came in its place.

Race: Human

Title: Otherworlder, The Goddess's Vestige.

[Ability] [Skills]

[Affinity] [Stats]

[Quest]. [Inventory]

"Hmmm…" Mark focused on the stats, his eyes squinted. He focused on the Title tab, particularly the 'Otherworlder' and just as he did, the Title expanded giving more information.

[Otherworlder: From another planet? another universe? Dimension or perhaps another plane of existence? This title is a label telling of your irregular appearance in this world.]

"Ohh, planets? Planes? This is silly." He concluded and let out a weary sigh.

He moved to the next.

"The Goddess's Vestige? I don't like the sound of this one. What am I? A messenger? Certainly not!"

[The Goddess's Vestige: A brand has been bequeathed to you by the goddess marking you as one of those in the favorable sight of the goddess. Your soul shall sing praises to her and exalt her.]

"Praises? Exaltation?" Mark chuckled, "Yeah, that's not happening. It's interesting though, I don't feel like I'm in her favorable sight so far, hell I almost got stomped to death by monsters, favorable sight my ass!"

"I wonder what cool abilities I have, I better have cool ones, I'm a favored one after all."

The tab expanded like the previous revealing more information.

[Ability: Blessings gained from Titles. You have 1 ability]

[The Goddess's Eye]

Mark read it out loud.

"Catchy name."

[The Goddess's Eye: See all under the eyes of the goddess. Titles, Races are automatically revealed to you, no hidden secret shall be away from your eyes.]

"Ohh, looks like this will come in handy. I wonder if it can tell if a thing is poisonous or not, edible or inedible."

He withdrew his mind's eye, and looked around trying to spot anything peculiar. However, there was nothing, only greenery.

He looked to the little shrub by his flank and a tab appeared at a corner of his sight, not hindering vision by any means.

[Reey Shrub]

The name remained fixed at a corner of his sight, and although it was in a tiny size, it was very visible to him, he didn't have to strain his eyes to make it out.

He focused on the tree in front of him.

[Wicar Tree]

"Wicar Tree." He repeated.

He turned and looked at the tree behind–the one he had leaned on.

[Wicar Tree]

"Wicar Tree too, this is handy, although it tells nothing more. So much for no secrets hidden from it."

He got on his feet and analyzed everything he saw, from pines, to leaves, to rocks.

He noticed that rocks and grains of sand didn't have their names beneath them, neither did rotting leaves, newly fallen leaves on the other hand still had their names in the corner.

Mark noticed this, he cupped his chin, rubbing it.

"Hmmm… So lifeless things are hidden from the goddess's eyes after all. No information besides name, no edible, inedible, poisonous or non-poisonous. This is so underwhelming."

He took his mind off the ability and imagined the information sheet, and it appeared.

"So that's how it works."

[Quest: There are no quests for you to take. Check later.]

He stopped and pondered.

'I got a quest right after I woke up, to escape those orcs. And there was that request, I suppose that's also a quest in a way. I wonder what more triggers the existence of a new quest.'

"Skills" The tab immediately responded, showing him new information.

[Skill: These are abilities not begotten from Titles, they may include that which is earned from hard work, or that which is bestowed.]

[You have a skill, a unique skill.]

[A Unique Skill: The rarest of skills, creatures with unique skill are usually either of great power or beloved by might beyond space and time.]

[Master of tongues]

He read the information beneath it and it was the same he had read when he had first gotten it.

"This one has been the most useful, I don't know what I'll do without it, I'll probably be dead without it."

"Seriously though, no other skills? Am I seriously lacking in talent? What of my smooth basketballing? That should be a skill, and mother says that I'm a great cook. Oh well…"

He moved below the canopy of another and leaned his back slightly on it, crossing his arms and clearly lost in thought.

"Stats" he called out, immediately there was a flee of birds from above, they cried in what seemed to be fear, and like his voice was a magnet, the bushes in front of him rustled and out of it jumped a black rodent in black and white stripes with a visible cloud of green oozing from it.

It was little and as soon as it got close, Mark gagged, arching his back. The thing looked harmless but it stunk greatly, the birds must have caught a whiff before him, causing them to flee.

He took a look at it, a proper one.

[Rein skunk]

[Creature of stink]

'That must be a title, a befitting one.

However, the skunk immediately dashed out of sight, afraid and in a frenzy. Mark noticed this and was confused.

"I don't like this."

Soon as he uttered those words, a white beast burst through the bush the skunk had come from.

It landed with a rare grace and immediately roared.

The roar made Mark's eardrum ring, he clasped them with his hands and began backstepping out of instinct.

[Rexadurus]

His system informed, whatever it was, it was a great beast, and a clearly fierce one. Its teeth had been exposed with the roar, and they were large and long, especially the four fangs that jutted from the corners of its mouth.

Its head was large, its neck slender and long and so was its body, but in that litheness was might.

It smirked exposing its fang once more, and a shiver ran through Mark's spine.

A thought rang constantly in his mind.

'I have to escape!'

'I have to escape!'

'I have to escape!
