Chapter 26 - Chapter 26: The thieves have fled

With each second passing, the formation weakened, slowly but surely pushing it towards destruction.

Though with sheer willpower, determination, and pushing their bodies to the absolute limit. They managed to maintain the formation but they knew it wouldn't be long before the formation broke.

Myles briefly turned his attention towards the entrance of the cargo as he blocked the attacks of the enemies. As expected, they still hadn't come out from the cargo.

"Damn it, what's taking them so long? It has been almost 4 minutes since they went inside," Myles cursed in his mind as he blocked the attacks of his enemies.

As Myles was cursing them, one of the enemies swung his sword towards the neck of their ally with incredible speed.

If he wasn't stopped, then the head of his ally would surely sever his head from his neck causing his death!!

They were already having a very difficult time maintaining the formation with their current numbers. If their numbers decreased further, their formation would be destroyed very soon!!

Myles knew that he must help his ally. But sadly he couldn't do so!! His hands were already occupied with dealing with the vicious attacks of nearly three enemies.

He looked at every single one of his allies and saw that none were in the situation to help others.

With a heavy heart, he accepted the cruel fact and was just about to focus on dealing with his enemies.

However, just a few seconds before he did so, a miracle presented itself. Like a punishment descending from heaven itself.

A rain of energy beams descended upon him, causing him to scream in pain as the beams, one after another, struck him.

"Ahahajajha!!" The enemy let out a scream as he collapsed on the ground.

Everyone turned their attention towards the source of the rain of energy beams descending upon the thieves.

When they saw the source of the beams, relief emerged on Myles and his allies' faces.

"Yes, the gunners have arrived!" Myles exclaimed, his voice carrying relief.

Just a few meters behind them, 5 gunners stood on top of the cargo while holding pure white guns.

Nearly three gunners were open firing at the enemy who was about to claim the life of one of his comrades.

All of a sudden, they ceased fire. Myles didn't understand at first but he quickly glanced at the enemy. At that moment, the reason behind their ceasefire was crystal clear.

The body of the enemy had collapsed lifelessly on the ground. He had died!! Myles and his allies were shocked due to the sheer strength of the gun itself.

As they were in shock, the caption finally issued the command that everyone was waiting for.

"All gunners open fire at the thieves; I don't want any of our enemies to live," The caption exclaimed as he pointed his sword toward the enemies.

Without uttering a single word, all the gunners behind open fire at the melee combatants of the enemies!!

Upon seeing them open fire, all the melee combatants halted their assault and retreated backward to protect themselves from the energy beams.

Upon seeing this, he charged forward to take them down. He also encouraged the others to do the same!

"Everyone don't let our enemies escape!!" Myles shouted his voice carrying seriousness.

They nodded their heads and did the same thing. But it wasn't because of Myles's words. It was because the caption was doing the same as Myles!!

Nonetheless, Myles ignored everything and continued to charge forward! However, the leader of the thieves issued a command that everyone expected.

"Everyone retreat!! This mission has failed!! I repeat this mission has failed!!" The leader of the thieves announced, his voice carrying seriousness.

"As expected" Myles muttered under his breath as he stared at his enemies.

Myles wasn't even slightly surprised by this order. Since it was quite obvious that they would retreat now.

Without their gunners to provide support to them from behind and pressure their gunners, they were at a major disadvantage.

It also didn't help that now their gunners were much stronger than before due to the usage of superior weapons.

He focused all of his attention on their enemies. Currently, they were running away from them as fast as possible.

A rain of energy beams was constantly descending upon them, but the majority of them missed.

Of course, they didn't have any intention of letting them escape.

"If I could use the boost of my boots, then I would be able to catch up to them very easily," Myles thought to himself as he charged forward.

Myles and the others kept moving as fast as possible to catch up to them. As they were charging towards them, Myles spotted them taking out numerous palm-sized grenades.

"I have a bad feeling about this," Myles mumbled.

Just a second later, their enemies threw nearly a dozen grades toward them. Seeing this, the caption quickly warned them.

"Everyone take on a defensive stance!!" The caption said while halting his steps.

Myles and the others followed suit, but it was far too late. One of the grenades exploded, producing a thunderous sound in the process which was enough to make them deaf.

Myles quickly covered his two ears but it was far too late. As the sound from early was causing his head to suffer from a terrible headache and dizziness.

Apart from the sound, Myles glanced at his surroundings, but he only saw smoke emerging from the place where the grenade exploded.

"Damn it, they have thrown sound and smoke grenades to hinder our senses to escape!!" Myles exclaimed as he made a realization.

Though, Myles knew their intentions. He could do anything about it at least in this state. He was sure that the others were in the same situation as him.

"We have to wait for the smoke to clear off," Myles concluded; he looked quite frustrated.

It was normal to be frustrated because, by then, the thieves would have long since escaped!!

They are wasn't much he could do in the current situation so he just decided to wait

A few minutes passed in the blink of an eye

The smoke had finally cleared enough for Myles to barely see his allies. He finally completely regained his hearing but he was still suffering a painful headache.

It took them nearly 6 minutes!!

He tried to look in front of him where the thieves were heading before. As expected, he could see nothing.

Even though he couldn't see clearly. He was certain about one thing

"They have escaped by now," Myles said.

Just a few more seconds later, the captain's voice carried through his ears.

"Everyone head back to the cargo!" The caption voice resounded through his ears.

It was clear by the captions order that pursuing them any further was no longer viable. Myles also agreed with him; hence, he followed his orders and headed toward the cargo.

As he walked around him, he saw countless derbies of buildings that were home to common people resting on the ground.

"The homes of common people have been affected due to our battle. Thankfully, no life has been lost," Myles thought to himself as he walked forward.

Due to the width of the road, the normal building hadn't been too affected, hence saving lives.

Well even if a lot of life were lost, the government won't care about the people of the outer edge. Unless hundreds of thousands were to die without any reason.

When he was just a few meters away from the cargo, he spotted the captain and the gunners standing in the distance. By now, the smoke had cleared away completely

He joined the others, standing beside Vincent, and waited for the others to arrive. When the others arrived, the caption revealed their next course of action.

"We will now escort the armored vehicle to its destination. Once we arrive, all gunners must return their guns. Compensation will be provided for any guns damaged by the device I use. As for the boots, just hand them in—no need to worry about repair fees. Are there any other questions?" The caption exclaimed, his voice carrying a profound sense of authority.

Myles and the others shook their heads signaling that they had no problem with this arrangement.

"Good, let's head out now" The caption replied.

They nodded and moved to their respective positions. Since the driver was uninjured, it didn't take much effort to start the vehicle. Soon after, they set off toward their destination.
