Chapter 5 - OFU II

LAYLA'S POV

Wednesday 11th June.

"Yet again, two girls have been rescued by the Nigerian police force at the same location from the last, the shed is now off limit as the government is taking it back due to several incidents happening there, the two girls who are unconscious and currently on live support as of earlier this morning are still to be identified, and no suspects were found but there is an ongoing investigation on who the culprit is and how to get them to face the full rather of the law, the cases of missing girls around the area is alarming and we advise young girls to not move about alone as it is unwarranted especially at trying times like this for the Nation" the news reporter said as my eyes were glued to the screen all along, I wonder who is behind this? Are they the same people that was behind mine too?

"Hey, what are you still doing here?" Jasmine said as she tapped my shoulder to take me from the trans I was in, I was lost for a bit I believe, it wasn't easy I was busy thinking about things.

"Huh" I said in shock.

"You haven't moved an inch, don't you want anything? You are new so I am sure you are the one who needs the most things" she said as she looked at me again, I was just noticing the shoes she had on her other hands, they looked really amazing but I didn't know you could get shoes, wasn't it only clothes and important supplies.

"You can get shoes?" I asked out of curiosity.

"Yes you can get anything you want that isn't banned, like cell phones they have a really strict policy against them" she said as she began to walk away from me, why would they thought? So they just enclosed us and keep us from the world? We don't even know what is happening in the real world that's not good at all.

Come to think of it I was rescued with two other girls, I wonder where they both of them are now since I was the only one they brought to the orphanage, maybe they both went home to their parents I think they did, I wonder if they remember what happened to us, how we got to the Warehouse? Who called the police? And how we were rescued? The only thing I can remember was the sound of the syrine from a distance and footsteps of people running away, I can never forget the red and blue colour that shined with it it brought hope to me.

"Aren't you buying anything?" Jasmine asked for the second time as she came back and now her hands stuffed with clothes.

"I will, give me a minute" I said as I unglued my eyes from the television screen which is where it was when I spaced out.

"Well if you don't want anything, you can just give it to me" she said in a low tone "I still have things I want and I can't get till December that's too long of a time" she added.

"I would go around and check, if I don't see anything I want I would give it to you" I said as I started walking away from her slowly .

"Okay, thank you very much but be fast about it, we are almost out of time" she said

"No problem" I switched directions and began to walk the opposite way, but I do think that it was a bit selfish of her I think, you have yours and you still want mine? I don't think I like the tone of that.

Well I think I need things for travelling since I would be out here soon either ways, I would be needing a traveling bag to store all my things in when I am finally leaving so I would get that and a water bottle to store water it might come in handy when I leave the orphanage.

"Hey, are you lost?" A woman who saw me walking asked, she doesn't look like a staff here though and if she is why isn't she on uniform?

"No, just looking for where I can get quality bags for travelling" i asked for directions.

"Oh okay, go to your left you would see it there" she said using her hands to also point it out for me.

"Okay" I walked in the direction and finally saw the bags"

"Be fast Zainab, it's almost time for us to leave " Aisha was talking to her friend, time to leave? I have not yet gotten anything.

I quicky picked grabbed a bag and left to the cloth section, I picked some boots I thought looked nice and two trousers and a nice top and began to make my way for the exit as everyone was also doing the same.

"Hey Maryam I have been looking for you" she said with a smile, "oh don't tell me you got your things, and I wanted this hat can I get it?" She asked.

"Oh I got 5 things also sorry, maybe you can drop something you got before to accommodate your new hat"

"Oh, but what did you get? I don't think you would be needing any of those to be honest it just looks like junk to me" she said as she rolled her eyes at me, I wonder what could make her say such a thing.

"No I actually think I need them but thanks" you don't think I need the bag but you need a silly hat? And we don't even leave the orphanage that much.

"Let's just go then" she said as we made our way to the check out section, she picked a piece of paper wrote her name and the things she got and dropped them, she also instructed me to do the same which I did and we began to walk out of the store, is that it?

"Sadly we just got news from our correspondent at the hospital, after 5 hours of being rescued and fighting for their lives the both girls couldn't make it , doctors also suspect assault and permanent brain damage due to the over dose of nicotine and constant head trauma to a hard surface which they believe it to be a brick wall, and that's all for today join us on another segment of the news till then my name still remains Muhammad yunus have a lovely day, thank you" the news just ended, may their gentle souls rest in peace.

"Poor girls, such a sad story and this happens all the time the chance of a victim surving is very low especially in perfect condition" I heard a cashier say as I walked out of the store, is it true am i lucky to be alive in perfect condition?

I walked to where the bus was parked and proceeded to find my seat right next to Jasmine at the spot which we sat down when we were coming, she was alone again, I wonder why, she seems like a nice person and I wonder why no one really talks or relate to her, is it because of her selfishness? But it's not that bad I believe.

The drive back to the orphanage was long as she was quite the whole time, did I make her angry? She seemed to not be in a good mood at all maybe i caused it or maybe she doesn't want to be disturbed anyways, it wasn't long until we got to the orphanage.

"Let's go" Aisha dragged Zainab as they walked out of the bus, it was then I realised that Mr. joseph was not with us, he did not come back with us I wonder why.

I proceeded to get down from the bus like the other girls and began to walk to the orphanage, jasmine was by my side the whole time but it was as if no one was there, is anything wrong with her?

"Hey" I said to break the awkward silence we have both been walking in for a while now.

"What?" She answered hostile towards me.

"Is everything okay?, you seem out of it" I enquired from her.

"No I am fine, I just feel sad because of the news that's all, the girls that died some of us are lucky to be out alive others aren't" she said in a low tone, I never knew she was a victim too life works in mysterious ways.

"Layla" I stoped as I heard my name being called from the back, it sounds like a member of the orphanage.

"Yes" I said as I turned to see our matron.

*How was your day?" She asked

"It was fine ma"

"Good, the police came looking for you today to do a wellness check but you weren't around they also got you some stuffs including a cellphone which they want you to use to keep contact with them, I am just telling you because it is again our policy but they insisted it is for a good purpose so if Mr Joseph comes and he agrees I would give it to you, for now go to your room and rest, see me by 6pm today" she said as she began to walk of.

"What a wonderful day" I said as I began to walk of to my room, happier than I left it.
