Chapter 26 - First night in a single place

Kalix Noah's POV

I look at Kassandra's surprised face. She must be thinking that I'm going outside to check on the situation.

I went out just to use the restroom when I heard my men chatting with each other about the things that happened after I fell asleep.

I learned that my wife carried me into this tent and stayed with me for a few minutes. She went out again and helped everyone until dinner was done.

They also see her washing the dishes, along with the servants, who are anxious because of what she did.

"Get back inside. Your Majesty, you need to rest. You shouldn't work too much because this region needs its duke. Come on, go back to bed," she says.

She grabs my wrist and drags me into bed. She makes me sit. "I will be guarding you for the night. Don't worry. No one will disturb you," she says. She went to the wooden chair and took a seat. She looks at me and points at the bed.

"How about you?" I ask. She smiled.

"I can take naps in between. I always do this and have mastered it. You will see me again, as lively as a deer, tomorrow. Good night, Prince Noah," she says.

She closed her eyes. I look at the bed and remember how busy she is during the day. I already had my rest a while ago. I should be sitting on the chair and taking naps, not her. I stood up. Kassandra softly coughs.

"Don't worry about me, your majesty. Just go to bed. I am used to this kind of situation," she says. I lie down and look at the ceiling. The tent is thick.

That's why I can't even see the stars. "Why are you helping me?" I ask.

I'm just curious. "It's natural for a wife to support her husband. I knew you needed my help, and I saw how much you cared about your people. That's the kind of leader that the Escalante army wants to protect and serve," she replied.

I turn to my left side and look at her. Kassandra's legs cross while she leans her face on her fist. She looked serious when she said those words. Her tone adds to the sincerity it holds. I sighed.

"Don't tell me that you didn't know my lines, your majesty. I know you are planning to say that," she says.

'I feel like I married a psychic woman. It's quite scary!'

"Don't look down on yourself too much," she says, halting and yawning.

"You are more than capable. Just show them why your dad and mom trust you," she whispers.

I watch her until my hunch gives me the answer. Finally, she fell asleep. I stood up and looked at her sleeping face. I smiled while listening to her soft breathing.

Kassandra Escalante, she's full of mystery and like a maze or puzzle for me. I don't know what kind of face she really has.

She's too much to handle, yet challenging. Will I be able to handle this woman? Her face slips in her fist, and she falls on me.

"Look who is not tired from all the work," I whispered.

I looked at her face and smiled. She looks tired, yet there's a smile on her lips. Maybe she's happy that we can save lives before it's too late.

I'm glad that Enrique suggested this plan or else I'll continue to help them, but I added a problem. I carried her in my arms and stood up. I chuckled when she pouted a bit.

"You need to rest either, Kassandra…" I mumbled.

I laid her down on the bed and pulled out the quilt. I can also sleep while sitting. A woman should be the one who sleeps comfortably. I don't need any special treatment from her.

The next morning, I woke up in bed. I got up and brushed my hair. What am I expecting? That woman—she's unbelievable!

"Your majesty? Your majesty?" Enrique called.

"Get inside. I'm awake," I remarked.

He gets in, holding a tray of food. I sighed and got off the bed. I look at him. "Is she busy again?" I ask. My confidant nodded.

"She's already helping with distributing breakfast to the patients. Those who are patrolling have eaten their breakfast and taken their rest. I already checked the villagers, and they're doing great," Enrique reported.

I'm glad that we made progress. I ate my breakfast and got ready for another day. I want this village to be stable before we leave it.

The villagers were waving at us. It's been three days, and most of them are now livelier. They can now stand on their own, and none of them have trouble with their bowel movements.

Those who have serious cases have improved as well. In no time, they will be able to work again.

"Thank you so much, Duke Noah and Duchess Kassandra! Come back again soon!" they all said. My wife smiled while waving at them.

"Recover well, everyone! We'll see you soon!" she replied. The carriage starts to move. My wife settled on her seat and crossed her legs.

I saw that fulfillment in her eyes. She's happy because of what we've done for the Easton village. We still have time to visit Westeria.

We can visit the other cities and villages next time. We have to prepare for the winter ball in six days. I hope we have enough time for that.

"Enrique, let's head to Westeria before we go home. That will be our last destination in the meantime," I remarked.

"Understood, your majesty," Enrique replied. I look at my wife.

"I hope we don't encounter any problems in that village. We only have six days to prepare for the winter ball," I remark.

Her expression turned sour because of what I said. I think she really hates the idea of hosting a ball.

She's into war, not into things like that. "You will be fine. I will summon the best organizers that will help you."

"I'm sorry if I react like this. I knew some things that women should do, but organizing a party? That is not my cup of tea," she says. That made me laugh. She sulks.

"Don't laugh like that. This problem is serious for me, your majesty. I don't know anything about noble balls. The only party I knew was grilling meat and drinking delicious wine. That's what we called a party," she says.

She really grew up in different cultures. Her way of life was different, but her empathy for people was exceptional. She excels in the areas where rulers should have.

"Can we just send a letter to the royal mother? Please?" Kassandra says.

She even tried to look cute, but suddenly she shook her body. She raises her hand and places the other between her eyebrows.

"Forget about it. It's total cringe!" she added.
