Chereads / vigilante deku / Chapter 6 - chapter 6

Chapter 6 - chapter 6

Izuku stands at the side of the road, just off from his apartment block. He's in as smart of an outfit that he could clobber together, along with his iconic red trainers. He thought about wearing smart shoes, but he always felt relaxed in his red ones, so he thought that they'd bring him some well deserved luck! He bounces up and down on the sidewalk in his red trainers on the spot, both to keep his energy from skyrocketing and to take his mind off of the fact that instead of going to high school today he was literally going to THE Quirk Research Lab. He doesn't even notice the blacked out limo that rounds the corner and pulls up in front of him. Izuku's eyes look elsewhere, thinking that this was for someone else. The window of the limo lowers. Revealing a very smartly dressed driver.

"Good morning. Might you be Izuku Midoriya?" says the Limo Guy. Izuku's eyes widen as his attention is ensnared.

"Yes sir... that's me. I'm Izuku Midoriya."

"Excellent. I'll be driving you the research facility on behalf of Dr Tsubasa. Please, hop in!" Limo Guy exclaims.

Izuku's jaw would've hit the floor if it wasn't attached to his body. The limo door automatically slides open in front of him, he couldn't help but look around as if it was meant for someone else as he gently gets in and sits down on the comfy seat. The limo door softly shutting as he gets comfortable. Limo Guy turns around and peeps in through the cabin window smiling. Izuku... didn't really know what to think.

"Is... is this a joke? It must be a joke, right?"

"No sir, this is entirely real. Now, there is some confectionary there should be hungry or thirsty, it'll be approximately thirty minutes to the facility. So just kick back and relax!" declares Limo Guy as the cabin window slowly rolls up, leaving Izuku to his own devices in the back of the limo as he feels it gently pull away.

"Holy shit." Izuku whispers under his breath. He looks around and sees a small pack of chocolate in the compartment in front of him. He thinks for a moment. He'd not eaten this morning, mom had been out early for her medical shift and all he'd done was chug down several glasses of water and get dressed. His stomach rumbles. "Well... I suppose it couldn't hurt... right?" he quietly says to himself as he picks up the pack and gently opens it, he picks one out and he eats it... It was like heaven in his mouth, it was so good! He quickly picks another out of the pack and puts it in his mouth as he taps away on his phone, finding his favourite hero podcast and pressing play. He could get used to this!

After thirty undisturbed minutes of peace, something that was a rarity to Izuku, the limo finally pulls up to the entrance of the Quirk Research and Development Complex. The limo gently pulls to a stop out front and jolts slightly as the engine turns off. Izuku looks as the passenger door is gently opened, the calming breeze of a summer morning welcoming him to his new life.

"Here we are sir, the QRDC." Limo Guy states.

Izuku pokes his head out of the open door and sees the complex in front of him, he summons all the willpower in his entire being to not have a complete hero-related meltdown as he steps out the car and brushes down his clothes. He looks at Limo Guy and smiles.

"Thank you so much for the lift! It was amazing! he exclaims as Limo Guy humbly bows before his very polite passenger.

"I'm so glad you liked it sir, I'll be here at around five this evening to take you home again."

"W-Wait, WHAT!? You're gonna take me home too?" Izuku chokes.

"Of course sir, and then bring you back again on Wednesday too, and so on!" Limo Guy iterates. Izuku was about to burst at the seams, he couldn't handle all of these wonderful things, which is why the presence of Limo Guy's gentle grip on his shoulder is enough to anchor him to reality. "Good luck on your first day sir. I'm sure you'll do brilliantly." adds Limo Guy.

"Thank you sir! I'll do my best!" exclaims Izuku, shining with happiness. He bows to Limo Guy and heads to go inside. "This is it... I'm actually going to change the world." Izuku says to himself as he walks forward, although as he enters the building he trips slightly on the doorframe. Thankfully he stays up right, he quickly scans the room and nobody saw. He'd gotten away with it, maybe his luck really was turning. He takes a deep breath and heads towards reception, he's a little nervous as it means talking to another stranger, but he doesn't have to worry for long.

"Ah! Judging by the green hair and eyes... you must be Izuku right?" says Receptionist Girl. Prompting a nervous series of nods from Izuku.

"Y-yeah that's me. H-hi." he says as the receptionist smiles at him. "Well then, Dr Tsubasa will come down to get you shortly; good luck on your first day!" she says reassuringly.

"T-thank you very much!" replies the nervous Izuku.

However he hears a voice in the distance, one that despite being very new in his life, had the distinct ability to make him feel at ease.

"Ah! Young Midoriya! Good morning." says Dr Tsubasa. Izuku smiles as he tuns around to meet him, Tsubasa offers his hand for a shake which Izuku gently takes, he underestimated the doctor's shake firmness, it almost made him jump with how hard he shook his hand.

"Good morning! H-how're you sir?" asks Izuku. The good doctor nods as he leads Izuku towards where he'd be working for the foreseeable future, Receptionist Girl giving him a little wave as he leaves.

"You nervous young man?" asks the Doctor.

"Y-yeah. Of course I am." Izuku says as he holds onto his rucksack a little tighter than normal, whilst his new mentor chuckles.

"I was too on my first day, don't worry, we'll get you through it. You'll meet all the staff and such, bit of admin to take care of with ID's, et cetera. Then a bit of quirk research to see out the day; sound good?"

Izuku smiles as he loosens his grip on his rucksack, that sounded like a fairly lovely first day to him. He takes in a deep breath.

"Y-yeah, that sounds nice." he says, the doctor smiling at that comment. They both arrive outside a glass screen door, their reflections staring back at them as they wait outside it.

"Welcome to The Sentinel Lab. The holy grail of quirk research in this day and age. Or your new digs, whichever fits best!" states Tsubasa as he scans his ID card, a sharp beep following the scan as the screen door shifts open.

Izuku's face resembling that of a kid on Christmas, seeing all of the work being done, people conducting tests, others writing notes and big heavy science machines doing god knows what. It wasn't a very busy place, but to Izuku, it was a small corner of heaven.

"Everyone! Apologies but could I have you all here for a moment?" declares the doctor as the rest of the research team walks over to the duo, Izuku grew nervous, but even by his standards, he was doing a great job of hiding it. "I'd like to introduce you all to Izuku Midoriya." he states .

"H-hello."

"He will be the newest member of our staff, so please, treat him with respect." declares the good doctor.

The majority of the crowd all smile and nod at their newest addition, they all seem happy to see a fresh face that would be joining them from now on. Say for one. A man with grey hair, crooked glasses, and an even more crooked expression. Doctor Kamada.

"Excuse me. Dr Tsubasa. What is this boy's gimmick? He's just a young adult, is it his quirk? inquires the grumpy looking man. This question dents Izuku's stoic appearance and he immediately grows more nervous in his standing. He folds his arms inward.

"Well, he's right here isn't he? Ask him yourself Dr Kamada." insists Dr Tsubasa. As the spotlight of Kamada's intimidation shifts focus from Dr Tsubasa onto Izuku.

"Well? What's your quirk." asks Kamada.

"I'm... quirkless." Izuku sighs as he looks down at the floor, disappointed. There were a few small gasps from some of the members in the room, however they failed in comparison to the reaction of Kamada, who's face slowly turned a crimson shade of red.

"Quirkless... You're quirkless!?" he cries. Izuku's face grows saddened as he maintains his staring contest with the floor, fortunately Dr Tsubasa sees this and takes a stand on Izuku's behalf.

"Kamada. What did I just say?" asks Tsubasa.

Kamada readjusts his glasses and takes a deep breath in and out, unfortunately Kamada's opinions were well known to the rest of the staff, but for Izuku? He was about to get a first hand experience.

"Sir. We're here to elevate society to new heights. Yet you bring this... Quirkless freak into our midst! He doesn't belong here amongst us!" Kamada declares.

Izuku's eyes start to water as he looks down at the floor, he could hear a few of the staff members tut at Kamada and some even outright curse at him for being so narrow-minded, but it didn't matter to him. He slowly turns to start walking away, he didn't even know where to, but just away from this. However he feels snagged as he looks to see Tsubasa holding onto his arm, anchoring him to his destiny. He hears Tsubasa take in a breath.

"Dr Kamada. You and your archaic viewpoints are no longer welcome here. If you're not out of this laboratory in five minutes, I'll call security. If you're not out of this building in ten, I'll personally see to you myself. Do I make myself clear?" states Tsubasa. That wiped the smirk off of Kamada's face, he looks between Tsubasa and Izuku rapidly before gritting his teeth.

"Are you fucking kidding me?! I'm your best researcher! You can't possibly hope to-" cries Kamada, however he's cut off by Tsubasa, who was quickly turning into Izuku's Guardian Angel.

"You think too high of yourself! Izuku here has more talent in his double jointed toe than you do in your entire being! Now. Need I repeat myself Doctor?" Tsubasa reiterates. Izuku couldn't help but smile at that, he glimpses up slightly to see a few of the other members of staff smiling too, Kamada had already turned away frustratedly cursing as he moves to pack up his belongings. Izuku looks up at Tsubasa subtly, whom was already looking at him, giving him a cheeky wink through his lab glasses.

'Dr Tsubasa's a badass, I'm sold.' Izuku thinks to himself.

Dr Kamada by this point had picked up his things and motioned past Izuku and the Great Doctor before he turns back to them, his face returning to that crimson tint it had developed just moments before.

"You'll fucking regret this, you hear me?" he spits as he turns to Izuku. "You'll fail miserably and only wish you had me to put out your fires." he states. Izuku frowns at him whilst Tsubasa stands firm.

"My only regret was not doing this sooner. Leave your ID on the desk, you won't need it anymore." instructs Tsubasa.

Kamada drops the ID limply onto the hardened lab floor as he exits the door with a whoosh, the screen door notifying everyone of his exit from the laboratory and their lives. Tsubasa clears his throat and returns to the rest of his staff, regaining his composure.

"Now... if anyone else takes an issue with Young Midoriya's appointment?" he states, prompting chuckles from the crowd, he smiles. "Very good, go on then all of you, please resume your research." he instructs. He looks over to Izuku who was smiling at him. "Sorry about that kid. Kamada's a smart man, but a man out of time, a relic if you will. Fortunately we have no need for him any longer." Tsubasa concludes.

"A-are you sure, sir?" Izuku queries.

"Izuku. You belong here. You deserve your place here. Now come along! We've got things to attend to!" declares Tsubasa.

Izuku energetically follows Dr Tsubasa through the lab, in all this time he'd been patronised and mocked for his lack of a quirk, and for the first time ever, someone had had his back and defended him for it. He smiles as he feels a small buzz in his pocket, his phone. He pulls it out discretely looking at the notification, oh it was from Mom!

'Sorry I didn't wkae you this morning, I thought my working little man needed his sleep! You're gonna have a great day honey, nothing but faith in you! Love you! Mom x' it read.

Izuku smiles, his tears had dried, his demon had been vanquished, and he followed his new mentor through the theatre of his dreams.

'Yeah... I think I am gonna have a great day.' Izuku thinks to himself.
