Chapter 39 - The Cost Of Victory

Dharen, was eventually pulled off of the inquisitor by some of the other students, who did not say a word at the state in which the inquisitor's body has been now left.

The entire battle has been extremely brutal and by far has seen the worst losses for the academy in nearly its entire life. Dharen, who had now regained some of his senses, was looking around the bridge that had been their battlefield slowly.

So many students and professors alike were wounded, but there were far more or were crying or sitting silently next to the bodies of their friends. Far too many had been killed, over something that was not their fight.

As he walked past all of them, back into the academy itself, there was not a word said on this however. All he got was a short nod in recognition. Every single person knew, Dharen had led them at the end. If not for him, they doubted that they would have been able to even win.

But for some, who had lost all of their friends, they could only wonder what was the point of winning when the loss of everything that they had cared about was the cost of it all.

As Dharen walked past Alexi, he suddenly stopped and looked over at the man. Who at that moment was on his knees staring down at the floor.

He mumbled, "Thank you, if not for you then…"

Dharen just stopped him, by putting his hand onto the man's shoulder.

"This is not the time for that. Just help them and I doubt the Inquisition is done, they will come again." The grim tone in Dharen's voice finally made Alexi look up, his eyes red from crying.

In the end he could not talk, and he just nodded his head. Seeing that his words had at least got through to him. Dharen walked onwards, entering into the academy itself, only to be met with the face of a rage filled Renna, alongside a group of confused and anxious Professors.

"Dharen, what in the nine hells were you thinking?" She screamed as she walked towards him slowly.

Then she continued, "Not only that, do you realise what you have done?" Then after pausing for a moment, as her eyes widened at the sight of the black blade that was in his hand. "Do you even know what the meaning is of everything that has happened? Especially with that blade!"

Her voice also drew the professor's eyes to the blade. Each one, just like Renna, had the same reaction as they saw it. It clearly had a far greater meaning than Dharen had thought, but still it was just a blade right?

"Dharen," Renna spoke softly now as she was before him, "Where did you find the sword?"

Dharen, still a little confused at why she seems so angry with him, after all that had just happened struggled to answer her words for a moment as the events that had just occurred once more ripped through his mind.

"I do not know exactly where that place was, but it would be underground, I found myself after touching the sigil." Renna just looked at him and sighed for a moment.

"I am guessing you do not even understand anything about the true meaning of all of this do you?" Her now worried eyes, and voice confused him more, but he did not mention any of that as he simply shook his head.

Whispering under her breath, "I figured as much." Then speaking more normally again she said, "The sigil is the mark of the Shadow Clan. The most important and prominent of the Vassal Clans under the Abyssal Clan."

She then paused looking into his eyes for a reaction, for which there was none as this information to him was not known anymore.

"That Clan had disappeared after the Crusaders line of rulers had ended and another family took the Second Imperium. They were before, one of the major military Clans, controlling a vast portion of the Imperial Legions. As for the blade.." She ended up being interrupted by one of the professor's.

"That is the Black Blade, a weapon predating both of the Imperiums. It has only ever been used by the leader of the Shadow Clan, or by the Chief Knight of the Shadow Guard, who protected the Abyssal Clan's leader. Well, aside from two cases that happened in the Chaos Age."

Dharen could not help but look at the Professor for a moment, who seemed to be incredibly knowledgeable on this sword, what he had said was beyond amazing considering much information from the First Imperium had been long since lost to time.

Renna, looking back at the Professor, feeling surprised, began to talk again. "Well, uhh, what he said was correct. But that does not cover your current situation. You have that blade, you just used it in the battle. The Inquisition will know, and they will know what it represents. They will come for you and never stop until you have fallen to their blades."

Dharen just looked at her feeling confused, as that is what was happening already. Hell, they were practically laying siege to the academy because of him.

Renna, who could see Dharen's face, only could sigh internally at his confusion.

"You clearly do not understand. The Inquisition has only set its regular forces at us, with an elite or two in charge of the attacks. Now, they will be sending entire groups of elites for you, not to mention. Well if the people above the elites are sent out, we will all be doomed anyway."

Dharen, finally understanding a little of what was going to happen, slowly began to realise how much of an issue this would be, if he was guessing right. The so called elites were like the Inquisitors who had gold on their armour. They could fight, at levels far beyond any student…and entire units of them would be the end.

Renna soon carried on talking. "Messages have already been sent to my family, and the families of the others in the Plateau as well. They will come here and take you back to the Plateau where it should be safe…"

Dharen, just looked at her in surprise and a little anger and what she had done without even asking him. More than that, what about the academy and everything else?

What had she done?!
