"Looking for something?"
Scott turned to see Sheriff Ned Barker emerging from the shadows, his face stern and disapproving with a gun planted directly at him.
"Damn it," Scott muttered under his breath, realizing he'd been caught. He straightened up and stared directly at the gun. "You nearly gave me a heart attack!"
Sheriff Barker's expression turned even darker. "Aw bullshit, what the hell are you doing here?"
Scott hesitated, knowing he'd slipped up. "It's a free country, could you put the gun down? As you know I got a boy waiting for me at home."
Barker's eyes narrowed but returned the gun back to his holster. "Save it, Scott. You and your girlfriend have been interfering with my investigation. Just knew one of you was likely to show your faces here."
"Beg your pardon," Scott said.
