Chapter 25 - Detention

In 5 minutes time, they had entered the principal's office since they weren't far from it and, they had each taken their respective seats: Maria behind the desk and Chase directly facing her.

"Well Chase, " Maria started as soon as they sat down, "I never thought that you would cause trouble on your first day of school."

"I didn't start it." He said, "Even if I did, he deserved it."

"What did he do?" She asked as she looked at him with attention.

"You'll know soon enough." He simply said, not wanting to give her any info.

"But whatever he did, doesn't mean that you have to attempt to kill him." She said as she flicked through a couple of papers on her desk, "At least, don't do it in school."

"So, what you're saying is that you don't mind if he dies?" Chase asked, inciting her to reveal her intentions.

"I mean, outside of school he's not my responsibility anymore to be honest." She casually said.

"Fair enough, "Chase said, agreeing with her, "But why am I here?"

"Detention." She simply informed him.

"What did I do?" He defensively asked but, he knew all too well what he did.

"Damaged school property, fought outside of the arena, nearly killed a bunch of fellow students and pretty much terrorized the school." She said as she looked at another set of papers.

"Doesn't Lucas usually do that and get away with it?" He protested.

"No, matter of fact, he's in this room on a weekly basis." She informed him.

"I see, " Chase reflected on what he was told, "That's deep but, why exactly am I here? You promised me that you wouldn't intervene no matter what happens and Lucas was never here when he bullied me so, why am I here?"

"Because at least, he wasn't going around destroying school property and didn't go around nearly killing people."

"I didn't kill anyone, they're perfectly okay."

"Keiaa begs to differ." She told him.

"Well he's not dead at least, I just cracked his neck but his dumbass fainted."

"But he's still severely injured." She informed him.

"Ugh, course he is." He mumbled, "So now what?"

"Well, you are in detention and I have work set for you." She said as she took a black folder out of her cupboard.

"Wait!" He exclaimed as he came to a realisation, "Did you predict that one of these days I was gonna end up here?"

Maria simply smiled and took a couple of papers out from the folder before closing the folder and putting it to the side.

"What's this?" Chase asked as he tried to peek at the papers in front of him.

"English papers." Maria sweetly smiled.

"WHY!" He exclaimed in complete exasperation. "I swear you don't do work in detention."

"When you're not with the principal that is." She informed him as she handed him the bulk of papers. "You have 3 hours, that's plenty of time for you to finish this."

"But why English?" He asked as he went through the papers, sighing heavily.

"That's because it's one of the subjects you hate." She told him, still keeping her smile.

"Can't I do something else?"

"You would rather run around the school 20 times with no powers before you can go home and since it's your family, they wouldn't care if you stayed outside till late."

"Can I start the papers now?" He asked as he took a pen that Maria had provided him with.

"Be my guest."

"You know what aunt Maria, "He said, making him the focus of his aunt once more, "I really hate basketball and, I would despise it if I had to go do it right now."

"Uh-huh." She mumbled as she didn't believe his white faced lie.

"I'm not lying, trust me, I really hate basketball." He tried convincing her.

"Let's go do some basketball then, " She said, causing Chase to stand up and feel internally happy that he could escape English to do something he liked but, "turn to page 50."

"Wait why?" He asked as he sat back down and flicked through the booklet until he stumbled to page 50. Maria stretched out her hand and Chase promptly handed her the booklet.

She read out loud, "The bouncy black basketball was swiftly shot from a three pointer position," She concluded, "What literary technique was used here?"

"How am I supposed to know!?" He tiredly asked, with a very annoyed expression on his face.

"It's an alliteration Chase, you should know that." She said as a matter of fact.

"What does that even mean?" He exasperatedly asked.

"conspicuous repetition of identical initial consonant sounds in successive or closely associated syllables within a group of words, often used as a literary device."

"Jeez aunty, thanks for the dictionary definition." Chase sarcastically responded

"No worries. Now then, should we continue?"

"Please let me go." He begged.

"No can do Chase, you're in detention. This is making me quite sad you know."

"How so?"

"I never would have imagined that you would ever be in detention and not for disrupting a lesson but for extreme and excessive violence."

"It wasn't excessive." He protested, "It was in moderation."

"Moderation?"

"slight moderation." He said, "correcting" himself.

"How many students have you injured?" She asked him.

"No idea but, I don't see how that's my problem since they were too weak... Damn, never thought I would call another person weak, it makes me quite happy."

"I'm sure it does. You've been weak all your life." Maria stated, making Chase nod. "So what are you going to become with your new fond powers?"

"What do you mean?"

"Are you going to become a hero and do good?" She asked, "Since you can protect people now." Chase burst out laughing as if she had said something funny. "What?" She asked, a bit taken back by the laugh.

"My bad, I just found it funny that you'd think I'll become a hero after scaring the entire school and pretty much embarrassing the strongest person here." He said as he composed himself.

"What do you want to be then? A villain?"

"Maybe." He answered, pondering upon the question.

"Why?" Maria asked. She was quite unsettled that her nephew was considering whether or not he should be a villain but she didn't show any type of emotion on her face.

"I feel quite bad for them since they never win."

"What do you mean?"

"They're always defeated and the heroes always gets the glory without listening to the villains side. I mean, some of them are just broken or they're tryna revive some of their loved ones and to do that they need to associate with evil people but others are trying to make the world a better place you see."

She took all that he said in consideration and asked another question. "But are you planning on becoming one?"

"Who knows aunty, who knows." He said as he shrugged his shoulders

"I think I'm starting to understand why you chose the superhero studies." She said as she placed the English papers on her desk.

"Yeah, cuz I was thinking of becoming a hero, as simple as that. There's no other reason." He said, giving her a quick but short answer. His eyes gave nothing away.

"I guess I'll leave it at that then." She said as she picked up another set of papers. "I have another question Chase."

"Go on."

"What are you planning on doing now?"

"You'll see, don't worry about it."

Since Chase wasn't telling her anything, she would have to wait for things to happen but, she didn't like having to wait. She could technically see the future but she would rather not spoil the fun.

The next two hours or so was just Chase complaining about his English work and begging his aunt to give him something else to do but she didn't budge.

"Finally!" Chase said as he took a look at the clock and dropped his papers on the desk, " I can go home now." Maria looked at the clock: 5pm it stated. She gathered all the papers and flicked through it but her expression quickly changed to a frown.

"You only did one page?" She asked, clearly unhappy.

"Yeah," Chase admitted, not caring about his aunt's remark, "Couldn't be asked to do more."

"So what were doing for two hours?" She asked as she put the papers in a folder named "Chase" and put it to her side.

"Day dreaming." He said. "Now can I go?"

"You'll be back here pretty soon anyways, you can go." She told him.

"How can you assume that?" Chase asked, clearly shocked by the future predictions that his aunt had just told him.

Maria ignored that question and just smiled. "You can go now Chase but, stay out of trouble, please."

Chase walked towards the door, opened it and looked back. "I'll try not to. But, no matter what happens, remember your promise." And with that, he exited the office.

'This kid...' Maria thought, 'Why did I ever promise something like that?'
